A detail I enjoy: When Alucard meets the Queen of England, he's shown to be very fond of and even flirtatious with her. My interpretation is that he appreciates her age. Deep down Alucard curses his own immortality and agelessness, so he has a fondness for anyone who shows strength in growing old.
I thought they had a brief relationship during WW2 when the Queen was young. Old friends meeting each other after half a century.

@@krow5099 I haven't read the manga, I only watched the anime. Still I've got the impression they were old friends through their emotional respensonses and interaction with each other.
Alucard's preference for the human form is somewhat explained when you remember that he *admires* humanity, and shows respect to humans who have the will to stand up to supernatural threats with their own strength without abandoning their humanity in the process.
which is why he respected anderson and why he was so angry when he gave up his humanity.
I remember reading somewhere the guy behind the dub was a HUGE fan of the series and was very adamant about making the best possible dub he could, up to tweaking the skin effects for the added omph some scenes needed.
Also was a HUGE fan of the TFS Abridged series, having his voice actors quote it in the commentary of ep 9 & 10. Which I highlyreccomend btw, ep 1 is a bit... old but picks up quick.

Alucard is one of my favorite character of all time.
He like many other characters in the series has earned and even embraces his role as a monster however unlike others he still has that small sliver of humanity that sets him apart from the rest of them. He showcases this humanity several times throughout the series mainly in regards to his relationships with other characters.
His relationship towards Seras while harsh does show he does have faith in her and he does know she can be more then what she showcases “underneath that girlish exterior is a fascinating and complicated creature” he just isn’t going to sugar coat anything in regards the new reality she finds herself in if she does something he views as stupid he will happily call it such. He however shows a sense fascination with her choices (such as her refusal to drink blood). Despite his criticism of her choices and overall dickish attitude towards her he does show he cares for her (when he makes her cry in Rio he immediately stops and instead of comforting her he simply drops her on her butt and speaks more softly to her claiming “this is just the way it is” which I’ve interpreted as him wanting to not have her he soft on humans simply because they’re humans as if given the chance they will take the opportunity to try and kill her). He also showcases his emotion towards her when he returns to London and pats her on the head after she had drank blood. Ultimately Alucard’s relationship with Seras could be described as a “tough love” scenario with Alucard still showing he cares about her. One last thing to note is that Alucard can be rather possessive (in the case of both Seras and Integra) as he views Seras as “MY darling servant, MINE to mold”.
His relationship with Integra is one of the utmost respect and he obviously cares for her just as he does Seras (while also being an ass to her as well the same way her treats Seras) and he is completely devoted to her.
His relationship with Walter most likely had the same stance as Anderson or anyone of the Hellsing family members: a strong willed human who embraced his mortality but still kept going. He most likely was affected by Walter’s betrayal just as everyone else was but he quickly hid that away and saw Walter as nothing more then a pathetic brat who abandoned everyone he cared about for power all in the name of not being “forgotten”. He did view Walter as “such a lovely old man” so his hatred towards has to do with the fact that not only was he a traitor he (like Anderson) was so quick to throw away his humanity for the sake of a power boost.
His relationship with Anderson is how he viewed Van Hellsing and the other vampire hunters: humans who were hilariously outgunned but still pressed on regardless, with that in mind that is why he was so enraged when Anderson opted to forsake his humanity for power as it spits on everything Alucard is trying to prove in that humans are better then the monsters of the world.
His relationship with the Queen wasn’t showcased much but from what we saw it was sweet and they both clearly have a degree of affection for each other and Alucard quickly brushes aside her concerns of being older as according to him “time has made you even more beautiful”.
Another interesting relationship his has is with himself or rather who he was as a human as he does have the self awareness to acknowledge that what happened to he and his people was his own fault: “tell me did your promises come to pass? Where’s your God? Where’s your Kingdom? What’s the matter? Answer me King, mad King! They’re all dead, every last soul dead! In service to you and to your promises! For your prayers, for your paradise, for your God ALL WERE SACRIFICED! Enemies and allies, the people you swore to protect, the country you would rule! Men, women, old and young even yourself!”
Yes overall Alucard is a sadistic bastard who loves to utterly destroy his enemies physically and psychologically but it’s that small sliver of humanity that he showcases in whatever ways he does (be it through crying or treating Seras and Integra with degrees of tenderness) that sets him apart from the other monsters in the series who really don’t showcase that.
Same here my dude. Absolutely love Alucard. I couldn't really put into words why I love the character so much until Bonsai pop did it for me. Thanks dude!!!

What I found kinda brilliant was how the villain had this elaborated plan that required a lot of preparation and patience. His actions seemed random and chaotic, but he had a perfect goal: To force Alucard into releasing all the souls and blood, so when he absorbs it back, he takes Schrodingger with him (which was probably something they took great pains to perfect) which would ultimately make him a living paradox and cease to exist (because Schrodinger exists and doesn't exist at the same time, his existance is tied to his own knowledge of himself, so Alucard, having multiple souls inside him, wouldn't be able to recognize himself and, quoting the Major, become a bunch of complex numbers)
The Tube logo over the Yahtzee flag is actually quite fitting.

Hellsing goes from just a hack and slash anime to anime about morals and philosophy and it's done so well you can honestly forget it's only ten episodes
To be fair each episode is almost an hour long
It is, a bloody masterpiece.
I once scoured the internet searching for the OVAs as they came out, but now having rewatching them all with such ease on Netflix I cant help but shiver, sigh, laugh and cry; now truly appreciating it so much more .

So, after watching TFS recent stream of rewatching and commentating on Hellsing Ultimate: Abridged, I finally sat down and finished Hellsing Ultimate. It’s bloody awesome! The dub is fantastic but I’ve def been spoiled by the VAing of the abridged and how well those were done, too.
The writing and philosophical discussions on being human vs being a monster are very thought-provoking, from all angles. From Alucard’s tragic backstory and mentality, to Anderson, a religious sociopathic zealot, Seras’s reluctance to become a full-fledged vampire because she feared losing a part of her, to even Herr Major rejecting vampirism because he valued his own humanity above anything else, “What’s mine is mine!”
The juxtaposition between the Major and Alucard works so well, too, since one embraced becoming a monster in order to escape his fate and a vain hope to save his lost life and empire; whereas, the other rejected vampirism and immortality because he thought it as the lowest form a human could sink. You become something that depends upon feeding on others and you sacrifice your humanity in order to do so. It disgusts the Major and his only gratification is to employ the most glorious VAR the world has seen and go out in a blaze of glory. The irony being that getting to that point involved co-conspirators with the promise of getting eternal life.
Then, the legendary Alexander Anderson, who is the Vatican’s version of Alucard and seeks to punish sinners and the wicked bloody heathens in the name of God. He sacrificed his humanity in order to kill Alucard and that’s what brought Alucard the most pain. Becoming the heavenly version of a monster, in order to destroy a demonic monster.
The really sad thing is that an amazing anime such as this won’t be done anytime soon. The Twitter warrior PC Clan is too sensitive to subject material like this. Hence why so many legendary mid-late 2000s shows like this, Black Lagoon, High School of the Dead, and even FMA won’t be released anytime soon. Maybe I’m just being negative, but even with the massive success of Game of Thrones, it’s much harder to gain success with darker anime, that aren’t edgy for the sake of being edgy. We shall see
Oh that's really cool they included The Wild Geese as a merc group. They were a real mercenary group with a really interesting history, my grandad actually had many war buddies who joined up with them.
I still rewatch the Abridged episodes again and again. Tbh, I love Hellsing Ultimate. It really lived up to it’s name.
Hellsing was quite a ride. I wish I could have read/watched the prequel things they did that filled in some gaps about Alucard and Walter's past, as well as the Major's, but glad you touched on the latter here. While I agree the dub is very good, for anyone who hasn't for some reason already, TeamFourStar's Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is also a fantastic take on the series that I would highly recommend. Its funny while still following the plot and not skimping on the absurd amount of violence this series revels in. Great vid and glad you covered the Ultimate series as well as the original anime. Both are great in their own right.
I would disagree on the plot front , the second half takes enormous amounts of artistic liberties with the plot , such as Maxwell becoming.....lol....the neo pope , something I highly doubt most Christians would stand for, and by part nine and ten they outright abandon the plot and the major starts rambling about society being complacent and this and that blahs blahs,a whole heavy handed commentary, when in the show and manga he is just there to wage the ultimate war against the most ultimate opponent he could imagine, Alucard, and to prove as alucard himself exclaims : that a human is superior to a monster like himself .
But despite all this it is very funny and a pretty good take that is almost close to being a funnier fandom than a parody much like dbza , I gave dbza a watch BECAUSE "this" was funny, its a shame that it will not get finished as this did
honestly I was young when I saw the original (my dad own the dvds). so I was excited when I saw Ultimate... when I finally saw Alucard's backstory and his true self. I just cried, it was so hard to watch that happen to him
You just summed up my feelings and somehow made this series much more deeper than I ever realized making me love it even more and I didn't think that was possible because it's already my favorite series!
This is what helped me know what real vampires are before I was corrupted by twilight.

PLEASE cover Hellsing Ultimate Abridged.
HUA is one of the best in the world. It is an abridged series but it is damn good and released 1 episode a year. It may not seem that depth-infused at the first 3 episodes, but every single episode adds more and more depth, and the characters are so different yet well written while not even animating new scenes. The damn series is worthy of being considered its own anime arguably, or atleast a DAMN good satirical media.
And plus, the makers have the approval of the dub cast iirc. (This is just something that I think i heard, though. Don't quote me on it unless it's being fairly disproven or proven)
Hellsing Ultimate is easily one of the best Abridged series out there, dialing every character up to 11 (and Alucard to about 666) while stile retaining enough of the original to allow you to understand the story completely. The villains are arguably even better than in the original.

Don’t know how many people already said this but the original only deviated from the manga because it wasn’t finished but they wanted a full series so just created their own story
"More is better" The grunge and rawness of the uncomplete earlier hellsing anime will for me forever eclipse the polished zany pop of hellsing ultimate, even if i definitely also enjoyed ultimate. Just compare the intro of both versions to see the difference.
I grew up watching the original with my dad as a kid and when I first discovered ultimate later in life I was so disappointed that I couldn't make it though the first 15 minutes without turning it off. That being said after watching both series back to back on multiple occasions, doing my best to cut out nostalgia and bias, I can't honestly say that the original is better. The music, animation, and general dark atmosphere of the original is all easily superior, and I wish they would have had the completed source material to work with, but it's painfully obvious that they didn't and were just making it up as they went along. It wasn't just "uncomplete" it was plainly incorrect, and as a result the further it progresses the more obvious it is that there is a complete lack of story/character development or background. I still wish they could have done ultimate in the same style as the original, as I absolutely detest the excessive dumb forced zany moments, but the more I watch ultimate the easier it is for me to ignore the faults and the harder it is for me to ignore how vastly superior it is in terms of overall story, character development, and excessive violence.

The original anime was made years before the manga was finished. At that time, 'Millennium' had been mentioned in the manga, but not specified. They simply went with what they had and assumed what could follow. Ultimate was only made after the manga had ended and can therefore follow the actual story.

I like to think Hellsing Ultimate is how Alucard imagined things in his head, and Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is what was actually happening. It actually adds to your thoughts at the end about Alucard being intentionally masochistic because he wants to be human again but has to live with his own choice to become an immortal, nigh invulnerable, monster.
I randomly found the whole manga at a bookstore back when I was 14 and it became my #1 fav. 👍
And THIS is why I fuck with this anime so much!!! Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate are amazing in their own right; the music, the characters, and the dub (Crispin Freeman’s Alucard is in my mind rent free) is fan-fucking-tastic!! Which is why imma binge this on Halloween and have some fun
Also Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is an absolute delight and anyone who hasn’t seen that please go watch it and enjoy it!!
I liked the dub, but the sub definitely has the edge when it comes to conveying the more subtle, dramatic lines from the Japanese original.
In the original Japanese, Alexander’s death scene is captured with all the dramatic depth it was meant to have. The Japanese VAs come off as genuinely emotional, and Anderson actually sounds like he’s dying, Alucard comes off as more sorrowful, and it works very well. In the dub, it just seems kind of flat.
The lines are a little more well written and read in the original overall, in my opinion. Now, I should mention that the official sub is not as accurate as the fan sub, and that happens a lot with anime. One good line in that scene I believe they messed up in the dub, was when Anderson asks Alucard how long he plans to walk the earth. Inthe dub, he says:
“Until the weight of my past is shattered by my oncoming future”.
Close enough. But not as profound as in the original Japanese, as simply:
“Until my past is destroyed by my future.”
The whole conversation is just more solemn in the original Japanese (again, as read through the fansub), and I know they’re just small changes, but I think it’s notable when important dialogue is changed in dubs.
