    Out of all the characters I felt like Hamegg could've had potential to be a interesting character. They could've have it where he and Astro Boy grow close as some what of a mentor student/relationship, but it's clear that he doesn't believe that robots can feel any emotions, in his mind there just mindless being that are only good for fights, which is why Astro doesn't tell the truth
    When its revealed that Astro is a robot, it causes him to feel conflicted and question himself, he still subdues Astro and makes him fight in the ring, still believing that robots are mindless but it's clear that he still cares for Astro. When Astro is in the ring its clear that Hamegg doesn't want him to get hurt but is trying to convince himself that robots can't feel anything. But then Astro and Zog refuse to fight, this causes him to finally snap and call off the fight just before Astro gets captured by the soilders, now realizing that robots can indeed be capable of feeling emotions. You could even have it where he helps the kids and Astro in the final fight
    If the movie focused on his relationship with Astro as well as the other kids and didn't make him a twist villain, he could've been a potentially compelling and complex character, you could still have him be an antagonist but now he has a lot more depth to him

    @topho6175 Год назад +48

    As stupid as it can be, i really enjoyed this one as a kid lol. I still do, but mostly for the nostalgia, and the bits of good that i can see in this movie. But i definitely agree with some of the points you made. Tenma should've been the antagonist, and they should've leaned more into the equal rights themes they had in the anime and manga.
    I can offer some explanations for some weird stuff in this movie. Yes, Astro does have butt cannons. It's in the manga. Idk why lol. Hamegg is an antagonist in the manga/anime, they just fumbled his story in the movie. I think it's kinda lame they went with a robot fighting ring instead of an unethical robot circus, which was his original business. As for the teacher guy who pops up sometimes, he's one of the supporting characters in the manga/anime, and is very kickass from what I can remember. They did not do his mustache justice in the movie.
    Sorry if this is a whole "captain obvious" or a "nerd emoji" moment, i just have complicated feelings about this movie that i wanted to share! Despite the hate it gets, i can't seem to dislike it. But i do understand why people hate it, and wish it was better too. Idk. Sorry this is so freaking long.

    I strongly disagree that the style adapts the source material art style well... it really doesn't. As someone thats a fan of osamu tezuka, it did not do justice to the character designs. The worst part is, the original characters like Cora, dr. Stone, and the other kids are in a completely different art style than the characters that were in the original manga. It's way too obvious which ones were a Tezuka character and which ones were made for the movie

And I think is a good plot line to adapt, or to borrow elements from, like how "The Batman" did with "The Long Halloween." Seriously, a cinematic adaptation of Astro has so much potential.

      Even RaisorBlade himself admitted that the only thing he liked about Astro Boy 2009 was the animation (it was only three months away from being a 2010s animated feature, and it really shows). In fact, if more people watched this review, even if they end up (rightfully) cherishing Flushed Away, I think they’ll also find out that AB really is a misrepresentation of what the franchise should be. And this is coming from someone who just bought a DVD collection of the 2003 series. Heck, it even has an Astro Boy movie (Astro Boy: Mighty Atom - Visitor of 100,000 Light Years, IGZA) that’s actually good!)
      And yes, as great as Studio Ghibli is (or was), with Goro Miyazaki thinking he could make better movies than his dad, I think he owes us an apology for only giving us the worst of the best like Tales from Earthsea and Earwig and the Worm.

    Not assigning blame on Stone for his son’s death is a very mature and sane response, but neither Tenma nor Nicholas Cage’s best roles are known for mature and sane responses. I don’t need him to be the main antagonist but at minimum the previous iterations of Tenma would be plotting some elaborate revenge scheme on the side rather than passively letting the idiot rant about an election at him while he's still in mourning.

    it seems like the writers wanted to add a bunch of politics and touch on communism, warmongering, identity politics, the problems with american elections etc but were shut down and edited out by higher ups in the studio. the story of astro boy is *supposed to be* an allegory for american politics around the time of the Vietnam war. Metro city vs surface represents US/Vietnam and the president represents all of the problems with Truman, Eisenhower, Roosevelt, but mostly Lyndon B Johnson. thats where some of the plot holes and problems with the characters you are seeing are coming from. and sure, the themes are super on the nose and tone deaf, but the writing is attempting to tell a political story and touch on multiple themes about the mistakes of the USA at a dumbed down level for kids, so of course there are tone problems.

Also yes this movie in terms of story is Dog-Shit. If Tezuka saw this movie when it was out that would've caused his death and not stomach cancer just by seeing this film or probably going blind seeing this just because of how bad the story is.

    Hear me out... I think the idea of the Blue and Red Core can work.

    • @gabrielchasecanceladosinap3959
      @gabrielchasecanceladosinap3959 13 дней назад

      Basically: The entire Project of Metrocity, the grand Capital of the country, it's to generate the first Atómic Fusión energy generator in the World. Using an extraterrestrial source of energy called "The Blue Core."
      A strange, and boundlessly powerfull gemstone capable of giving energy to two countries for centuries. If not for eternity. But very few were capable of creating a way to harvest the energy of this core, as if the mschines of men were unworthy from such gift.
      And the Dr Tenma and Elephant were in charge of propperly create a reactor to do it, but Tenma was so enthrilled thst he neglected Tobio, and tragedy ensued...
      But Stone, being the selfish and merciless politician that he is, didn't gave Tenma the time to process his grief, and pressured him and the crew to finish the reactor soon... and to spite him... he grabbed a prototype Belic Automaton, a favorite relic of Stone, and even a compressed Atomic Fusion reactor, and used them for finishing his little passion project that he had with Elephant.
      Creating the First Super Robot in the world. One that wouldn't be binded to the Laws of Robotics and be completely free. Being pair to humanity.
      And from that mixtura born of dispair and spite, Atom (the other name to Astro) was born. Being literally the only worthy to wield the miraculous powers of the Blue Core. Since he was built for that purpose, as he has a heart worthy of being the host of said Core.

    Your comment on The Surface; Since Metro City floats over the Earth, you can figure it doesn’t belong to any specific country and therefore has its own president. Making “The surface” Earth but why does he think going to war with them will get him re-elected I dunno. The villain does suck though. I’ll give you that.

    If I had to guess, I think President Stone was written the way he was a kid-friendly commentary on the Bush Administration and the Iraq War. Take for instance he says "We're in an Arms Race with the Surface World." seems like a kid friendly wink wink nod nod to "WMDs in Iraq" So I think they sort of like went the route of the SW prequels and tried to make a commentary on Bush or maybe Cheney, though it was still poorly executed

      If that is the case that would be really interesting because one AstroBoy manga, Pluto by Naoki Urasawa actually does very directly handle commentary on the Iraq war. I definitely wouldn't call it kid friendly at all, but I think it's the best AstroBoy adaption's been made, so it would be interesting if they were a bit inspired by it. (But then they failed so miserably considering Pluto's a masterpiece)
