honestly the 2009 movie is what made me grow so attached to the story of astro boy and made me want to watch the anime (same with speed racer's movie) but anyway yeah no one talks about this film nowadays it's not only heartwarming but it also tears your heart out. like i still remember even now how much it broke me when his dad didnt accept him because he didnt consider him to be his "real" son. like?? no that WAS his son and he was just being kid!! i get where the dad was coming from since he was grieving but idk. it really does hit a lot when he apologizes for not being a better toby. i adore the found family theme in this overall. great vid!

Another fact: (Though maybe you knew this?) "Hamegg" was also a hunter in the original "Jungle Emperor" (Kimba) anime series! I guess he was one of Tezuka's cast/players who, like others, appeared like a stock actor in Tezuka's "acting company", in more than one of his works! AND, even Astro Boy makes a brief appearance in a Jungle Emperor/Kimba episode!! 😃

I very much agree that including toby in the marketing would have given kids who've never seen anything astro boy related a better insight on his origin.
I _remember_ being a kid and seeing commercials for this movie, and being confused as to why characters were calling him 'toby' instead of 'astro' at the beginning of the movie; had no idea he was a replacement for toby, and almost thought the real toby was a robot given how fast he did that test. but then he dies, which i guess is a cool, yet dark plot twist for someone with no astro boy knowledge to see.

I'm convinced Tobio still reincarnated into the robot. The only reason Astro boy (or new Toby) has a different personality is because Tenma was a busy man and never had the time to understand his son's interests besides intelligence

The movie was my introduction into the Astro Boy universe which I have come to love, and as a result, I hold fond memories of the movie and love it in spite of its flaws. I adore the 2003 version, and want to delve deeper into the older versions. I will say though, I can see why people have issues with the movie. While the movie is great to me, it still has flaws and changes to the story that for die hard fans, may be unforgivable flaws and changes. While the chances of happening are slim, I think it’d be super cool to have a reboot of some kind, whether it’s another anime show or a movie made with today’s technology (Edit: Especially now that anime has become a much bigger part of pop culture and not just a “nerdy/geeky” thing)

To this day, the butt guns are one of my favorite jokes in this movie, if not my absolute favorite. I'm a sucker for weapons and powers that are guaranteed to never be expected, the kind that will, without fail, make your opponent stop and let out their preferred confused onomatopoeia. And, the best part? The movie didn't make that up- _the butt guns are actually part of the source material!!!_ 🤣

Absolutely exquisite review and commentary, Ramen!! (I was working as a projectionist in a first run movie theater when the 2009 Astro Boy feature was released, but I didn't watch it; ....strange, I know....) I've known of Astro Boy since I was a kid in the 1970s, but I never knew how good this feature was until I saw your video here!! (I'm actually a big Tezuka fan, and my favorite Tezuka anime from the 1960s, I must admit, is really Jungle Emperor/ (Kimba), partly since I am most drawn to works about animal characters.....BUT, I know that Tetsuwan Atomu/Astro Boy is a very important, historical and ground-breaking work. It's also probably the most popular Tezuka anime. I found it so heartbreaking and poignant when I started reading the manga and found Astro Boy's origin in the dead son of Dr. Tenma.....but that is Tezuka! So many of his works are filled with powerfully emotional moments.....
Thank you again for making this video and letting the world know how good the 2009 feature was!!

I had the honor of watching this back in 2009. Gotta say it was a pretty good adaptation of the OG series, with some changes here and there to his backstory and physical appearance. Although changing his appearance based on so called ‘research’ was a pretty dumb decision that doomed this film. Most likely fans were not impressed by the change of appearance and backstory when this film was released and when critics bashed this film they joined that band wagon. I honestly still love this film and I even watch the 2003 anime series. Both go pretty hand in hand even though they’re different continuity. I wanna see where the sequels would’ve gone. I bet Nicolas Cage would give us full supervillain dad vibes for movie 4 or 5. What a shame this movie has been all but forgotten.

  • @KennethScharf

As far as a live action version of Astro Boy, well the Japanese actually DID THAT before they made the first Anime (back in the late 1950's)! You might be able to find some of those TV shows on RUclips. They were quite 'Buck Rodger-ish.
Also I'm sure you're pronouncing some of the Japanese names wrong. For example Professor Ochanomizu, his name means "Tea Water", and so is pronounced as the two words for tea and water, or ocha no mizu. The 'no' seems to be silent so it is pronounced as O-CHA ME-ZOO.
As for Astro's dress...or lack of it... Well he DID appear in full clothing in the original anime from time to time, and more often in the original manga. I thought that most of the changes made were based on the CGI animation that was being used.

While I found the review satisfactory, there's only one thing I don't agree with. You implied that Surf's Up was one of Sony's missteps. Honestly, I felt it was a great risk that Sony took. I mean it's a mockumentary about surfing and was more unique than Happy Feet was in the crazy era of penguins.

If anything they make a live action Astro Boy movie. I think it should take place in the 1960s just the original show and have it be dark and very gritty and very bloody as well. And also have Astro Boy be a teenager just like the 2009 animated movie. And maybe make Astro Boy American as well.

I'm a bit sad about it... There was a teaser from 2015 about a reboot that just, never happened. And the show airing rn is a pre-school program just using the characters and setting but nothing about the story... It feels very disheartening because I want more of this character and to know what stories it has to tell.

I find it fascinating seeing all of them back to back, because they feel like each was made at such an important time in animation history. From the first anime in black and white, to the first color adaptation, to the age when animation was being handled more seriously, and then the 2009 in CGI... If they make it again, I'd hope sony does handle it and does a style like in Spider-verse, Stylized cgi x 2D animation would be so amazing with this property~!

I think this was a good movie. I loved it as a kid and it led me to really discover the character later. However, I don't think it's a good adaptation. All of the other series' major themes have focused on social conflict. It's tackled themes of war, oppression, discrimination, job automation, etc. And we can see these themes in the movie, but it's just ignored. Robot rebels are merely running gags, the surface is really bad, but Astro never has to fix it. Nothing more is done about the robot colliseun. And the focus is between Tenma and Astro's father/son relationship, but Tenma was never actually there for Astro in any series.
