    I did a little drawing with a Preppy a couple of days ago, and I realized that I didn't believe that any other pen would have resulted in a better drawing. I literally don't need my other 27 pens.

    I have a Platinum Preppy #3 fountain pen and love it! I use Platinum Carbon ink and find it can go months without use and still flow perfectly every time without clogging issues. It has never let me down.

    I have one of these, and they are great! Love to use the other side of the nib so it turns out to be a 0.1 nib. Drawing is so detailed if I use this way. The pen is fantastic, the ink flows smoothly, and you can refill the cartridge with your own ink. I refilled mine with waterproof Noodlers Ink, because I love to paint my drawings with watercolor. Great purchase and value for the money!

    Just got my first preppy with carbon ink and converter over the post a couple hours ago! Gonna get serious with ink and watercolor sketching the coming weeks. Watching one of your previous videos prevented me from ruining my other fountainpens with the wrong inks. Thanks Teoh, the start of my artist career is more fun and less struggle this way. I learn a lot from your videos.

    Thanks for the review Teoh. I have 6 Platinum Preppys as they are so nice to just have on me and at work and I don't worry about them. I use all of them as an eyedropper so it holds an amazing amount of ink but have never had any leaking problems doing so.

    I love the platinum preppy! One of the pens I recommend to newbies. Great value and the 0.2 is quite fine for newbies with bad paper. The only issue is something you also pointed out - the recess near the nib traps ink when you fill it up from the nib. I just wipe it away with a tissue.

    An excellent series of pens, so practical and accurate. Your very good review summarises the advantages and features of this pen very well. As the price is so affordable I have a series of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 versions in different colours. I think the Preppies are even better with a converter inside them, as this gives them extra weight- and you can then use other colours than the rather boring colours supplied by Platinum in their cartridges.

  • @robineliason7850
    @robineliason7850 4 года назад +6

    I have both fine and medium nib ones, which I run with the Platinum Carbon ink in them and I just love them both. I like that they are cheap to replace in the event of breakage or loss, and while I have seen others complain of the cap cracking on them I have yet to experience it myself.
    I was unaware that it came in the extra fine nib, that is good information to know and I will have to look for them.
    I do need to get one of those converters, though, because the little disposable cartridges go too fast and get expensive.
    Thanks for the review!

    I use the Preppy 02 with deAtramentis all the time, it works very well. When you turn the pen upside down you will have to dab off excess ink once in a while as the flow is designed for the wider line.

    This is my first fountain pen (F nib, not the EF reviewed) and I really like it. The performance the first couple of days was disappointing but it works well now. Occasionally it skips so it's not flawless. The Platinum ink is dark and quick drying. You can't go wrong for the price.

  • @CanuckJim
    @CanuckJim 4 года назад +26

    I use these at work - people have a habit of "borrowing a pen" and if they accidentally trash the nib, it's better than one of my expensive ones. As you said, I eyedropper fill them so they hold a month of ink.

      Hi CanuckJim, when you turned into eyedropper, did you use the extra ring and vaseline, or it can work without it? Thanks for the answer.

    • @testtube70
      @testtube70 4 года назад +4

      Hi, @@misolowy7876
      Noticed that no-one else answered your question so I'll take a crack at it. You will need at least one of the two (O-ring and Silicone grease) to make a water tight seal and stop the ink from slowly bleeding out through the threads. If you can only get one then you might as well get the silicone grease as you can put that on any eyedropper pen but the o-ring might only fit some barrels, also it's a pain to take on and off if you want to share one ring between pens. If you can then get both then do it for the peace of mind. In short best to use both for peace of mind, regardless you will need at least one, and if you only care about getting one the grease will probably be best for you.

    You can "swap" nibs by exchanging the entire unit you have in hand. Since the Preppy sells for less than a Lamy nib, that's not a real problem. You can also use these units in the Plaisir and the Prefounte. I found the 02 size to be too fine/scratchy but the 03 is a great sketching nib.

    • @grandegracia
      @grandegracia 4 года назад +1

      I actually found the 0.2 better for my sketching and generally for writing. It's maybe just me, but I found the ink to be run more smoothly from the EF nib, that's why I use it the most, but I have one with the 0.5 nib and it's really nice as well.

    Every time I want to draw with upside-down turned nib, I usually also rotate the pen in my hand so it is circa 90 degrees to the usual way how you hold the pen. Because it usually writes dry. But when you rotate the pen in your hand and draw strokes from left to right (rather than up to down), then it draws wetter. Give it a try and let me please know :)

    The 05 nib is sooo smooth! Of course you can't compare the feel to other expensive FP, but the smoothness is great, and it's light. I love writing with it, and the shading is amazing. It fits platinum converter, if you want to do it. But of course the converter is more expensive than the pen. Lots of people recommend to make it eydropper, and i'm planning to do it when the opportunity arises

    What a great pen - I have three. MOST of the pens I own do not draw any better. Unless you need a fude or a flex or something, or a nib broader than .5 (smallish medium), you should consider VERY thoroughly what it is you are getting for the extra cash when you buy a pen for over $10.
    I have a Faber-Castell Basic EF that draws markedly better than a Preppy, maybe twice, or at most 3 times better. It cost 5 times as much. Worth it to me, but just barely.

    A fine review Teoh. I would like to point out however that cheap plastic pens are, unfortunately, still cheap plastic. I purchased a little Preppy for my daughter to use as a highlighter, with a highlighter nib as you described (& to use with some of that glorious dragon pink Noodlers highlighting ink) and found that at least in the hands of an active twelve-year-old, the cap on the platinum preppy definitely cracks and is a lot more fragile than a pen to be used in normal everyday usage should be. It was fixed with a little scotch tape around the cap base, but the crack spread and eventually did not provide an airtight seal around the nib anymore. So you get what you pay for, keep in mind.

However I have a preppy with 0.2 nib that has a somewhat sturdier cap, having it for almost 3 years, I haven't had a single problem with it. • @sdovas
      @sdovas 4 года назад +2

      Hey Joe, just be aware that you should absolutely go in and adjust the nib and feed on your Ahab, especially if you're planning on using it as an eyedropper, because that is without a doubt a place that the Noodler's pens both excel and have the most fault, because being so "tinker-able" you can definitely get them adjusted to be working exactly to your satisfaction, but you can also easily overlook something that could have the pen gushing at you unintentionally.
      I might suggest an investment in an inexpensive package of the noodlers reusable 308 cartridges, which hold a huge amount of ink and still insulate the ink from the heat of your hand in that cavernous Ahab body. Again, the leak potential.

      The body is not that durable. If you want durability then you need to spend more. Consider Lamy Safari or TWSBI pens

    This is a fantastic fountain pen, the quality of the nibs [no matter the size of the nib] is extraordinary, there are more expensive pens who can't boast the same quality.
    I also bought the Platinum Plaisir the sturdier big brother of the preppy as it has an aluminium barrel and cap.

    0:05 Beginners? The best fountain pen available today with an incredible price. The same company makes the best drawing ink the Platinum Carbon Ink, which is available in cartridges too. Absolutely the best combo for an excellent price.

    This is my beginner pen, I've only been using it for three months. Is it ok with watercolour?
    Edit: thanks for the tip on flipping the pen around to get a thinner line! It's a nice trick.

      You need to use waterproof ink to use with watercolour

      EoThorne Only use waterproof inks that mention specifically they are safe for use in fountain pens

      I'm not exactly sure what type of cartridges this uses. It's best to get the Platinum ink converter.

      It uses a proprietary cartridge and converter, I converted mine to eyedropper refill with an 8 cent o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease, both are food-grade so they don't interact with the ink.

    Hi, can anyone please let me know how the line width of 02 platinum preppy compares with platinum carbon ef desk pen

    • @wakeupFFS2012
      @wakeupFFS2012 4 года назад +2

      The line weight is similar but I've found the Carbon Pen lays down wetter line - presumably due to the specially designed feed. In my experience using Platinum's Carbon ink in the Preppy the lines will often appear dark grey while the Carbon pen's lines will always maintain a solid black. The nib feedback on the Carbon is wonderful while the 02 Preppy seems a bit....'pointy'. Your mileage may vary, though.

      Just compared my platinum carbon desk pen with carbon black to three platinum preppies and a pilot plumix fine nib.the carbon desk and the preppie 02 seem to have the same line width. The 02 is inked with pilot iroshizuku ink. I have two preppie 03 nibs, the original pen I bought from Staples writes a line as fine as the 02 nib, but the other 03 preppie purchased off eBay is definitely a wider line than the Staples 03 nib. I also have two preppies with 05 nibs that write broader lines than either of the 03 nibs. I wonder if this is a issue of quality variability. All the preppies still write smoothly, but the Staples preppie cap spontaneously cracked, even though it is handled only at home and gently. Tape has not restored the original tight seal. Because of the potential for cracking i will not buy more preppies. The pilot plumix fine line is slightly broader than the PP02 or the carbon desk pen. That surprised me since I thought it was my finest line pen. It is definitely more scratchy than any of the platinums.
