- I talk about the fun, affordable Platinum Preppy fountain pen & show writing samples! Crystal featured is a Sunstone. The Platinum Preppy is a fun pen for beginners and old-timers alike! You can use cartridges, refill cartridges, eye-dropper convert - and the pens come in XF, F, and M nibs. The pens can be fragile so handle with care - but enjoy them! They are reusable and refillable - fun for all!!! I find that the fine nibs (03) work very well on cheap paper - won't bleed thru with most inks.

Great video! Very informative. I received my first preppy fountain pen in pink today and I’m already loving it so much! Makes me wonder how much better my handwriting could be if I had learned from the beginning with one of these beauties haha ☺️
An inexpensive pen carrying case would be a hard clam shell eye glasses case. This works well especially to carry in book bags. And you can store the pens nib up in the case.
mishellereine, what a great idea! I have a few eyeglass cases...you could put and extra cartilage too...for just Incase!
mishellereine Here’s another pen case idea for you, try a cigar case, I bought one at a car boot sale for pennies and it looks really smart and holds three pens.
Awesome idea Mishelle!!! I really like that. I have several eyeglass cases around too because I wear trifocals, reading glasses, computer glasses ..... LOL
I found a triple aluminium pen case very cheap on eBay. It is light a safely carries my Lamy Safari Fountain pen with its matching ballpoint and mechanical pencil. Mind I don't take my Lamy out of the house either. I don't mind taking a Platinum Preppy. We can buy so many fountain pens cheaply on eBay.

Just bought my first one, here in the UK, along with a couple of its bigger sisters: the Platinum Plaisir (basically the exact same nib and feed as the Preppy in a more robust and classic looking body and costing less than 10 GBP) in both Black and Gunmetal (medium nibs all of them).
I hadn't written with a fountain pen in over 20 years and decided I fancied trying one again, and the Preppy Preppy/Plaisir seemed to get glowing reviews - low cost but fine quality - and so I thought with such a low outlay there wasn't much of a risk if it turned out it didn't appeal! But I am not disappointed, and indeed am most pleasantly surprised. I am really enjoying writing with them and find it relaxing and quite theraputic - and it also really does help improve one's handwriting...
And now I am getting equipped with bottles of ink and syringes to fill my own cartridges (as mentioned in this video). Oh Oh... I had better be careful or this could become an addiction...! ;-)
Awesome! I think you'll enjoy refilling cartridges -- I know I do! And with all the variety of colors these pens come in you can dedicate a pen/color easily. I still write in my ink journal what I'm currently inked with so that I remember and don't mix inks. If you find that the Preppy's are too scratchy for you -- you can always smooth the nib with a little piece of Micro-Mesh. Sometimes I do that - but some of mine have not needed it.
I just ordered my very first fountain pen and did a quick search on it and am glad I found your video. I'm very excited to get my Preppy.
Oh that's awesome! I hope you enjoy yours as much as I like mine! I have one eye-droppered so the entire body can hold ink! Cartridges are great too and can be refilled. I did this video so long ago I can't remember what I covered. :)

I'm a pen-freak myself - used a fountain pen since 1994, the year I started High School, and used one particular pen in all my exams - a marbled blue Pen Quest Italy fountain pen :)
The choice of inks for refillable fountain pens make it much more fun that your everyday ballpoint; and adds depth to the journalling hobby.
I've JUST bought a few Diamine Bottled Inks, and will be upgrading from cartridges for the first ever time - can't wait for them to arrive, and test the new colours out.
Hi Callum - I think you'll really love using bottled inks! There are so many colors to choose from! I have a few pens that only take cartridges so I clean them out with an ink syringe and refill them from bottled ink! Glad you liked the video! Preppy's are fun and nice pens!
Preppys are a truly great starter pen. Mine are utilitarian now but, had they been available when I first started using fountain pens, I would’ve considered them a prize pen. Thanks for another well structured and informative video.

Thank you Chris for this video. I just wanted to add you can buy an inexpensive adaptor which will allow you to use standard international cartridges/converters with the Preppy. The adaptor costs £1.50 in UK which I believe is currently about $2.10.
Wow David that's really good to know -- I had no idea there was an adapter! I saw the price for the converter on Jet Pens was $8.50 and that seemed WAY too much $. I'll have to look into the adapter! Thank you!
I bought mine from 'Cult Pens' here in the UK but I'm sure a U.S. company will stock them. Works on the Preppy and Plaisir.

Hi, Chris! I really enjoy your videos. I'm very new to the fountain pen hobby as well. Not a whole year yet as a "serious" collector, but years ago I purchased a couple of really cheap pens from Walmart! They slipped by the wayside. As I've been watching planner videos, I came back to the fountain pen and now I'm in love. 😍 I recently purchased a TWSBI Eco which I really like a lot. I've been intrigued by the Preppy so appreciated your review. Like you, I really don't want to take my Lamys and my TWSBI out and about, but the Preppy I might. I also have a little Petite which is just the cutest thing ever. I bought on a visit to Tokyo Pen Shop in Fairfield, Iowa. (Love, love love her store and site.) Oops, I'm rambling...sorry, but such fun to "talk" pens. None of my friends are into it.

Hi Chris, brilliant video; you covered so many areas re Platinum Preppys; very informative. You might want to look at the Platinum Plaisir, if you want a more robust Preppy. The wonderful thing is that you can unscrew a nib unit from a Preppy and screw that unit onto a Plaisir.

Chris Saenz Hi Chris, I personally like the Platinum Preppy 0.2 nibs as most of the paper I encounter is very cheap and the 0.2 & 0.3 nibs do very well. The Plaisir is wonderful as it offers more protection and will be my new workhorse pen.
I've yet to try a Preppy in the 02 ... I'm sure I'd get along with it after smoothing the nib which is what I now do on all my 03s. That's another pen I'll look forward to trying one of these days!!! It's nice having an extra fine for those places where you have to write really small!!!!
Chris Saenz Personally I haven't needed to smooth either the 0.2 or 0.3, but I hope they work out for you.
I find that platinum nibs actually work very well upside down! I use them like that a lot when I need to do extra extra fine lines 😊

Thank you! I was so excited when I realized that refilling the preppy cartridges was so easy and any ink flows good in these pens!! I don't take the eye-dropped one away from my desk because I'm not sure if it could leak. But the refilled cartridge ones I take everywhere.
Your video's are such a joy to watch. I just received my 02 in the mail yesterday. Because I write so small in my bullet journal, I wanted to try something I heard was finer then an extra fine. I think I've heard the 02 referred to as an ultra extra fine or maybe it was ultra fine (I can't remember.) I plan to eyedropper it, but discovered I don't have the right size o-ring.
Hi - thank you so much - glad you like the videos! I've yet to try an 02 - ultra/extra fine Preppy but it would be nice to try it. For forms and for some places in my bullet journal I know it would come in handy -- I currently have a micron 01 and 03 -- those are nice too but I can't change ink colors!!!! I hope you find an o-ring to convert your Preppy - I wonder if a place like Home Depot would have one or a hardware store?
Got my fine blue Preppy just yesterday in the mail for my very first fountain pen. At first it would always skip and I had to shake it constantly to get it starting, but after flushing it with a bulb syringe, it works great. Start up is still a little slow but the skipping problem is fixed. Gonna convert it to an eyedropper pen and use Nooder's Liberty's Elysium ink once the default cartridge is used up :D
Hi Eetsu - since doing the video I have had a few more Preppy's and I had one I needed to smooth the nib a bit with micro mesh - that pen is amazing now with just a tiny bit of smoothing! Different inks can flow smoother thru the Preppy's too -- I imagine Noodler's Liberty's Elysium will flow very well! Good luck - the Preppy makes an amazing eye-droppered pen! :)

Hi Ginger -- oh you will love the Preppy eyedroppered - it holds a lot of ink and stays writing forever! I have one I've had eye-droppered 2 years!

Hi Anya! How do you like them? If you ever find them too rough or "feedbacky" you can use a micromesh stick or piece12000 grit and polish the nib to smooth it. I say this because I do this with some of Preppy's. It all depends on how you like feedback.

I love the Preppys - not as cheap as the Chinese pens, but great nibs and write very nicely. I eye dropper most of mine and they last for ages. Nice video, thanks.

Love the Preppy. Cheap, reliable, smooth writer. Much better and half the price of the Pilot Kakuno. Great for sampling inks, just refill the cartridge as you say. I even like the standard blue cartridge the blue one comes with.
They are great right!!! I have at least one in use all the time!
Chris yet again I recognise your pen journey as similar to my own, I have half a dozen Preppys and enjoy the 0.3 fine version the best. The Pilot Metropolitan for me is the best value pen out there with the medium nib size being ideal.My grail pen is the Pelikan M 800/805 series just can’t get to push the button on that purchase as yet, but it will happen I’m sure.
Hi Jeff. It's amazing isn't it that so much enjoyment can be had from a $3 pen AND from the higher end pens. I enjoyed the pens I loved before getting back into fountain pens too but now with all the ink choices it's enough to keep me happy for a lifetime of writing!!!! Good luck on getting your Pelikan!!!!
I have four bottles of ink, each with a favourite colour ink that I refill from. I like Noodlers black that is fraud proof, then my light maroon, turquoise and purple. You are right about getting discouraged trying to buy refills for pens previously purchased cheap pens and the refils are relatively expensive. Fountain pens can become addictive, I find. I was goi g to recommend a Lamy Safari but I see that you too have found the Lamys. Have you seen the recently posted video by Goulet Pens of the Lamy being made in Germany. Really worth watching.

The best way I found to re-fill a Pilot Varsity, is to use something really hot, to melt a small hole just large enough to get your eyedropper or ink needle to fit into. With the nib pointed up, this hole should go about 1/8" below the threads. Then with the nib pointed up, inject the ink until it is filled up just below the hole you made.
Then use hot glue to fill in the hole, being sure to put a little around the edge of the hole so you can easily remove it when it needs to be refilled again. Don't put too much glue in the hole, just enough to make a kind of plug for the hole.
I used my soldering iron to make the hole, but I would think even a very hot nail, would do fine as well. Just that with a nail you would need some pliers to hold the nail and push it through the pen body.
Hi Gary - that's a really interesting hack to refill the Pilot Varsity! I had trouble and couldn't pull the nib/feed with a regular needle nose plier and tissue so I was pretty excited when I realized I could use the section pliers!
The Platinum Preppy also has good flow in my experiences, working well with otherwise difficult ink. If you want essentially the same pen without the cracking risk, there’s the Platinum Plaisar (sp).

Hey Chris, nice video. Question: the little black box of "INK" on the top right, are those cartridges that fit the Preppy? I've seen them in a local shop but they were marked as cartridges for the Platinum Balance, Plaisir and Cool series. Do they fit the Preppy too?
Can you also tell me which converter fits this pen? You have a 8.25$ converter on your index card but I didn't hear you mention it throughout the video. Thanks!
Hi Felonious -- yes the black box of Platinum cartridges shown in this video also fit in the Preppy's. They are proprietary to Platinum pens so you can't just use Pilot ones for instance.
I'm linking here to the converter that will fit the Preppy -- of course it's pricey compared to the pen itself. You could refill cartridges with an ink syringe or even eye-dropper the Preppy. But this converter will work and also works on the other Platinum pens:

Must be I forgot to mention the converter. At one time I planned to purchase one but then I decided to just eyedropper a few Preppy's and refill cartridges on some as well.
@@ChrisSaenz13 Thanks so much for the info, Chris. I'd love to convert my Preppy to an eye-dropper but I'm unable to find the correct O-rings here in Belgium. I'll probably use the needle trick or bite the bullet and get the converter, even if it is relatively expensive compared to the Preppy.

Hi Michael -- I hope you like them! I love mine -- one or two of them I've used just a touch of micro-mesh to smooth the nibs but that's because I don't like much/any feedback. Mine are in daily use for my bullet journal!!!!!
A great number of fountain pens can write with nibs in a reverse position ( personal experience); and the ink flow no doubt a little less, produces finer writing.
Hi Furong -- reverse writing may be something I don't think about much becaue I like Medium and broader nibs! :)

I do need some help! I have a nib that really drags while writing. It came on a Jinnah X450-sand gold in color with a medium nib. I ordered the Robert Oster Ng Special 16. I love the pen color and the ink color but that drag in the nib is not good. Can you help me? Can I replace that nib or should I do something different. Love you videos by the way. Thanks
Hi Donna -- you could try a number of things ... you could replace the nib with any #6 nib ... but you could prior to doing that ... try micromesh to smooth it out some and possibly even some brass shim material to open the nib slightly -- both of those materials are available at pen stores online - I've mostly purchased mine (and replacement nibs) from Goulet Pens. I do find that SOME Robert Oster inks can come out the nib a bit dry .... so you could clean the pen out and try another ink that may flow better if you have an alternative ink. In fact, sometimes just cleaning a pen will change the way it writes .... especially if we forget to clean it prior to use. I hope you find a solution ... I am fussy about nib drag and feedback so I almost always change out the Jinhao nibs for a Goulet, Anderson, or other $6 nib.

Hi P sinha -- I love to refill my Preppy cartridges with Noodler's Heart of Darkness. I also eye droppered a 03 Preppy pen once with Diamine Aqua Lagoon ink and it literally stayed good over a year and I finally used up all the ink in it!!!! :)

The Preppy is a great inexpensive writer. The yellow cartridges are terrible (other people may like the yellow ink), so I emptied the yellow out and will reuse for mixing colours.
Hi Annie -- I agree -- the Preppy is great! I am not sure how the yellow ink could be seen so I'm sure I'll be the same with mine. Mixing colors sounds really fun.

Hi and welcome! I got 2 ink syringes from Goulet Pen Company and once I got one from Jet Pens -- they are blunt tip syringes with long tips so that you can get into the cartridges/bottles easily. :)

I've never had a Preppy that needed the nib smoothed. And I've never had an EnerGel with purple ink that didn't leak. Just luck of the draw, I guess.
Hi James - I think I'm just very intolerant of feedback - these days I don't smooth the Preppy's anymore so it might have been "just me". :) Gsh I never had an EnerGel leak -- that would have really upset me.
