  • Not a watch for everyone and that's ok. But, it connects my love in the watch hobby to my love for Japan anime in 1 package. Fun for about $40, I wasn't expecting much other than to have a visually cool looking watch that invokes 80's nostalgia and tells a small story or facet of myself and one of my many interests.
I am an 80's kid and growing up watching Robotech and the first installment of the Macross saga was such an integral part of my life's enjoyment after school and shaped my hobby interests for years to follow. The story, the characters and designs were iconic to 80's pop culture within that franchise's genre. I still a variety of them in my personal video library, reference books, and model kits and toys.
This watch is part of a wave of similar watches which are Version 1 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Macross. There are 9 varieties of the watch which take design cues from the different Valkyries (space airplanes/jets that can transform into robotic modes). They are primarily from the Macross TV series, not the movie. This one is of the Skull Squadron/Leader variety, the VF-1S. There are 4 color variations of this specific variant. I luckily got perhaps one of the most subdued colors in a grey monochromatic scheme,.and my favorite, which I would nickname "Low Visibility". All 9 variants have a matching pass-through strap which carries the dial design through. I would consider the strap to be a Zulu-style type.
I have no idea the movement inside? It's definitely a quartz chronograph, possibly some Miyota or Citizen based movement, or a cheap Chinese one of some sort. IDK? But, so far it seems pretty accurate and at least the ticking running seconds hand appears to hit every mark precisely... Which is more than I can say for some other much more expensive quartz movements.
Not going to lie, the watch's intended functionality is not fully utilized. The slide rule scale is not rotatable, so, it's purely for aesthetics. And, the chronograph is basically only good for 60 seconds. There are tricks/hacks to squeeze a bit more functionality out of it. But, overall, this watch was mainly an inexpensive way to enjoy my watch and Japanese anime hobby together.
Lastly, the case is made of stainless steel, gunmetal PVD coated in my example, and not plastic. Dimensions are 42mm diameter, 10.9mm thickness, L2L 50.3mm, 22mm strap size. 30m of WR.
All in all, I feel I am getting more than $40 worth from this lighthearted purchase. Could maybe do worse for some watches in a somewhat similar vein costing $100 and much more. This is a rarer case where I fully accept fun form over functionality.
