- Perhaps the most competitive scale auto contest in the world is held in Salt Lake City every 2 years. Attracting model car builders from all over the world, many of these autos are scratch built. and many are detailed kits and modified kits.
The contest is produced by the International Model Car Builders’ Museum in Salt Lake City. A unique museum presenting historic auto models and masters and patterns from some of the best know plastic models ever produced.

Founder Mark S. Gustavson has announced that they will be ending the GSL in 3 years. There will be one more in 2022. This may or may not end the championship, but will end the championship as we know it. Ending the worlds best model car contest will create a vacuum, and "shift in the force" that may lead to some follow up or redux, who can say. Time will tell......
*******************************************************************
From the web site:
The GSL Championship was started in 1979 to provide an hospitable venue for professional-quality builders, of all ages, to compete where basic and advanced craftsmanship, innovation, and risk-taking are rewarded, respected and celebrated and where the friendly exchange of modeling information, ideas and techniques are encouraged. Additionally, attendees can enjoy and learn from a wide range of seminars, evening discussions , a day of tours of the International Model Car Builders’ Museum, the Museum-benefit Auction, and the Trade Show.
Since the start of this now world-renowned competition, we’ve welcomed thousands of competitors from around the globe, drawing competitors from North and South America, Mexico, and Europe. Widely recognized as the arena for pleasant but stringent competition, GSL also presents three days of instructional seminars, a tour of the International Model Car Museum, a Museum-benefit auction and 4 days of convivial fun.

Thank you Dale and Karyn, That certainly is every automobile enthusiasts dream. You've made it a feast for our eyes! The editing of this video too, brilliantly done! God bless the two of you, for all that you do for us. This video, along with the heaps of others you've created, leaves one just wanting more! Keep them coming, you're not laboring in vain! We love and truly appreciate everything you're doing. Hats off! to you guys! Loved the music too!
Thanks!!!!!!!!’ I love to get comments like that. Love to have a million subscribers but better to have a few that really like what we do. Because we only do it for fun.
Just found the first video. You two are like peas and carrots you crack me up ! The music's good the coverage is excellent. Hands down the best GSL coverage PERIOD 🤗
Thanks!!!!! More Sunday
Your enthusiasm is contagious! You made viewing your video all the more fun! Thanks so much!
R Daniel thanks!!! We sure have fun doing it.
Brings back memories from my childhood. I used to build these and helped me grow up to be a muscle car lover.
Junior Rosado for me it was t bucket rods. Black widow and green hornet
Same here
Thank you to the both of you for sharing your passion and for this very well put together video along with great music and commentary. I throughfully enjoyed the entire video. I may be 39, but watching this made me feel like I was 5.
Keep up the excellent work you two young love birds...
LM C thanks!!!!!! Just finishing part 2. For a week from Sunday.
I'm now 54, and have been building these all of my life, on and off, along with ships, planes, subs, etc. This was a fabulous show! Great filming and commentary! Also, love your 'Stang!
Thanks! What a great show. One more and done. Sad.
Really good to watch, I didn’t know type of show existed, thank you. I love to build 1/3 scale models.
Hello from Australia.
Great stuff guys, really nicely done. I built model cars in my youth but they were never this good. I love your enthusiasm, it's brilliant!
Wow, simply amazing models. Those motorcycles especially. Would love to have that kind of talent! Thanks for the video!
Nice job guys! As always, well covered event where I am sure it was very difficult which models to highlight with so many excellent examples from which to choose.
Hundreds of great cars!!!!
Great show (and I enjoyed the background music). Look forward to the rest of your footage
Thanks.. I like the music too. To each their own I guess.
Beautiful models. Thank you for posting. Look forward to part 2.
Just finished it tonight
Great video guys. Thanks so much for sharing your coverage of the GSLMCC 2019 show. You are correct in saying that the last GSLMCC will be held in 2022. It will be sad to see it go but all great things come to an end. Thanks again for sharing your video.
It’s been a fixture for soooo long. I really want to finish my dang 1962 Lotus 22 for it. One last trip into the breach. And the dang model is mostly finished. I want to rebuild the frame in brass because the first one is plastic and keeps breaking. So that and a firewall and cockpit. Debating the tires. They are currently Urethane castings. Like to recast in rubber. But the hard plastic ones look fine. But rubber feels better. If someone touches them. But love to be IN the last GSL.
@@ToyManTelevision I would just love to be in attendance for the last show as I have never been there. It is an iconic show.
This is the 1'st time I caught one of your presentations. While the models are fantastic, what is truly fantastic is the fact
that your wife is into the hobby as much as you!
I love these they're so much fun and just amazing. What a treat to see the work of so many builders with staggering amounts of skill and talent.
Next week. Race cars! And some other leftovers
Thanks for taking us on a tour--I haven't assembled a car or motorcycle model since my teens, but I still dig the scene, the art, and it is nice to see what's going on these days. And weathered is the word that describes those worn and faded finishes, and that can be a realistic look, for sure. Thanks again and the two of you are like what, the cutest couple on RUclips? One of them, for sure.
Thanks!!!!!!! We set out to have fun. So far so good. More screwing around coming up.
Just amazing details!! I've been a builder for over 50 years, some of the best I've ever seen. I've built a couple of hundred kits in my life, in 2009 I had over 150 in my collection ranging from big rigs, fire trucks, construction, NASCAR, street custom, dragsters, tow trucks, even was a " PRO " builder for awhile as I built and sold on eBay. I love this video. I hope to see some big rig categories and racing categories in the future. I'm " building " up my newest collection again. Currently have NASCAR, big rigs, and motorcycle kits. 1/25- 1/12 scale builds. Thanks for the video and it's great to see a husband and wife team both passionate about the same hobby. GOD bless both of you.
These are amazing and up from there. Go through the older shows. The USAC car it the best built I’ve ever seen. Including Windgrove cars.
Y'alls camera work, IS top notch!!! Awesome editing, music, and banter!!! Top shelf vid!!! When y'all post a video, I'm like a kid, in a candy store, keep them coming,..... GOD BLESS, .......... PEACE!!!!
DEWY FROM KNOXVILLE. Just fining part 3. Have you seen part 2 yet? Then off to Steve’s house because he’s laying track and rebuilding the part of the layout he just tore out. Weird I know but take a look. Then you will understand
You and your wife are a joy to listen to, your enthusiasm is wonderful.😳
You're the most fun guys on RUclips. I'm now about to get back into my childhood hobby. Thanks guys.
Thanks!!! Do have fun with it!!!
Amazing cars and details.Great job!
Dale, so very well done -- great video shots, wonderful commentary from both of you and nice music. Really well done. Thanks!! - Dean from Minnesota
Thanks. Working on part two right now. Will be up a week from Sunday. I think. Or this Sunday if we don’t get the follow up is Steve’ rebuild finished in time for this Sunday.
Thank you for this video , it brought back memories when I was a boy and built models and grew up loving cars and trucks especially the older ones . Very nice paint and detail work on all of them to . Thanks , please do more videos .
This is always been such a fabulous car show and unfortunately there is just one left coming up this spring. I suppose depending on Covid
You did mention this was coming-up. Big show. If memory serves, and it hardly does anymore, the last show did not seem as big. We are always blown away how far techniques have come since my day making models. Enjoyed this episode right down to the bolts. Greg and Jeanne.
Hi!!! After the edit I found out the super seven won best of show. And it’s100% scratch. Wasn’t sure. And the orange Harley won best paint and other master awards. Some great models, two more coming soon but those two walked away with it.
DUDE! You made this worth staying up late for, thank you! You've gained and instant subcriber.
Bob
Hi and welcome aboard. Not a board. Or bored. I digress. Hi and welcome 🙏
The paint jobs on those cars were amazing, never mind the detail work.
The flames and metal work on the low riders are flat amazing
Dale the music is perfect for this video!!!!!!!!!
Also the comments you made about slot cars are very true they are back and I think a lot of guys are leaving model railroading for that hobby now.
There is a beat up old slot car center I know of. Dark. Dirty. 50 years old. Same guys racing there for the last 50 years with their 1:32 scale cars. Need to go shot up some video.
Where? I'm close to you. I still have some 60's slot cars that I would love to run sgain.
When slot cars hit the scene I took regular plastic model cars and converted them to slot cars. Being larger than the early cars the tracks soon increased to let these run.
Awesome looking show.... thanks for sharing and making me feel like I was there 👍
Thanks for watching. Please share it in Facebook or whatever. Thanks
Fantastic event! And absolutely amazing pieces! Thank you for the video.
Plymouth Die-Cast Replicas you are soooo welcome! Tell your friends!
Great shots of great looking crafting! My OCD is killing me when I see all the venue dust on some of those perfect builds!!
When I get in close it really shows up.
This is GREAT I love model contests! We just had one in our area! It was great. . . this takes kits to the next level! WOW. . .I can't wait to see more! We love toy cars!
We just bought a Russian model car. A GAZ. The model weighs 40 pounds! Wow!
Wow, those models put my detailed models to shame! Such great work! My eyes are no longer capable of building models anymore.
As always loved the show!
These are past amazing. For years the best of the GSL have been scratch built works of art.
I have the AMT Tyrone Malone's Kenworth Super Boss model kit still sitting on the top shelf of my closet waiting to be built. It is a classic kit from the 70's that has been brought back into limited production. Maybe someday I'll start on it.
Too late, it's already been opened. :) I have to make a correction, I had stated that this model kit was a limited production, it is not. I had confused the info from another model kit. Please accept my apologies.
Below is the info that was found online;
After countless requests, the Kats at AMT have dug deep in the tooling vault to uncover the most unique drag truck to ever speed down the quarter mile! Tyrone Malone’s Super Boss Kenworth delighted fans during the 1970s and the truly dedicated ones continue to keep the excitement alive. AMT’s landmark Retro Deluxe™ reissue will feature newly tooled, pad-printed tires, expanded authentic decals and more!
KIT FEATURES:
• 1/25 Scale, skill 3
• Molded in white
• Super-detailed Kenworth drag truck with custom body and spoiler wing
• All-new “Bandag” front & rear semi truck tires with padprinted lettering
• Authentic expanded decal sheet with 1:1 version options
• Bonus mini display box
• Vintage Retro Deluxe™ packaging
Thank you for the slow pans & decent editing in this and all of your vids which are very un-MTV-like in that we don't have to be dealing with one-second jump cuts from subject to subject as are so many vids here on YT. Also; you two seem to be smart enough to keep your faces off camera with the exception of the casual introduction and the closing. Most folks here on YT think that they are the most important thing about their presentation and we spend a lot of useless time looking at their faces; as attractive as they might be. Good luck to you both -- and we will see you on the road sometime. Ron & Heather JAGRAF/X.
Thanks! We are always trying to improve. When we get a thumbs down we really want to know why. We have made many changes and keep trying to zero in on what people like but without loosing our original feel.
Thanks again for the model show enjoy these episodes very much and great music wow!!
Just found out, after editing this show, the Super 7 won best of show as well as several other master awards. The orange Harley won best paint. Both totally scratch.
Toy Man Television its a detail contest! Hard to beat talented modelers who thrive with this skill , and the know how. Those models are fantastic.
Just incredible!,I used to build car models ,still have some built ones and plenty of unbuilt ones up in the closet from when I was a kid (I'm 54) I wish I had the patience I once had as a younger man to paint all the small details , even if I did it would pale in comparison to the crazy awesome detail on these models!
It’s a great way to spend time. It’s fun. Put in the tv or music. And a coke. And build amazing!!
Absolute top notch video. I just recently revived my love for model building. Thanks for posting.
Wonderful!! Build something cool!
Wow, just amazing, thanks for the upload.
This is soooo amazing. One more in 3 years. Then over. But I’m betting something will fill the void.
WOW! I have never seen anything like this. I am speechless on the detail. I was shocked when I saw my old Honda Intercepter! It didn't say if it was a 500, 750, or a 1000 but it brought back some great memories. I had a 500 and it was perfectly balanced. Whether cruzin' on the streets or hang'n off on the turns up Angeles Crest Hwy. it was fun. I miss it, but not trying to deal with traffic! Thanks guys!
That one on the vid is 750. What a machine. And what a model!!!!! But the Harley won the class. Mostly scratch. As were most of the bikes.
thanks for covering this and for sharing. maybe next time turn the volume down on the music.
Great works of art. Thanks for sharing!
They are that.
Great builds by everyone!! Absolutely Amazing!
Competition. Real live competition!
Great video its amazing the talent people have. I thought the commentary was great you two truly have a passion for cars great to see 2 people enjoying themselves and their hobbies together! my favorite is all the dull paint jobs and cars that look old, damaged. I think its funny to see a old muscle car with like rusty bumpers and rust and rot holes on the fenders its so crazy that its a model! oh and that milk crate ! holy! so cool. thanks for a great video
It’s sort of sad that they’re stopping this contest but we still get one more!
Thank you for this video all the amazing models you guys rock absolutely an amazing video thank you so much for sharing this it gives me ideas of how to do my rest of my models thank you so much guys I follow you guys all over thanks again
Tell your friends! One more GSL this Sunday on race cars. Then next Sunday off to Steve’s to follow up on the teardown and rebuild of his model railroad. Great story. Sad at times. We have a bunch of videos on this over 5 years of ups and downs. Building the greatest model railroad and tearing it down a few days later. The why is the story. Sunday!
The detail! These folks are real artists! As you said, hard to tell some of them from the real thing!
Yup even the price!
What a huge and awesome diplay, my God, amazing!😍
Julio Rivera one more too. Sunday race cars!! Sunday! Sunday!
Thank you for the great video. I couldn't be there this time but I will be there in 2021. If you have never been to NNL East be sure to get there next year!
Surprisingly I just got off the phone with Marc Gustavsson! A little mixup over a package that was sent to the wrong address. Anyway we talked a little bit about the upcoming show. Should be great
In my opinion Everything about this video is excellent! Absolutely great👍👍
Thanks!!!!! Fun day screwing aro
That v8 motorcycle. The first one with the ac oil filter on the transverse engine. Anyhow, the welds on the carburetor were even precise! Unbelievable! These people are so very talented!!!!!!!
Right? I saw the welds and thought who models that? Wow!!!!!! And wow!!!
Whoa! That was fun. Great presentation.
Siren851 thanks. Next week race cars!
Wow what awesome models.
right? Those motorcycles, and the Super 7. WOW
Great show and great video. But the Woody does come in a kit almost exactly like that one.
Fools gold and that gulf piece were my top 2! So far!
That super 7. In gulf colors.... amazing
Great video Guys!! I use to have a 69 Mach 1 w/428CJ in the driveway!! My only regret in life was selling it!!☺
Hi. Gotta love that Mach 1. 69 Mach has Always been one of me favorites. Karyn too. Although she is a died in the wool impala person. The 428 PI in close to what is in the Blue. But well it’s totally Frankenstein. 427 heads. Radical cam. Holly EFI. Mallory ignition. 428 crank. Oversized pop up pistons. Offenhauser intake. Hooker header. Spin thrust exhaust. 6 miles to the gallon if I press on the long pedal. 14 if if I don’t. Actually took me a month to figure out how to leave from a stop without either killing the engine or spinning the tires.
omg loved the video seen two cars that i watch them build those i could not stop staring at a couple of models in the box plus best of wishes scooter out
Great video! Thanks for keeping the hobby alive.
They’ve postponed the last show for a year. No point rushing into something that may have to be canceled so they’re just excepting the fact that they want to push back a year.
The motorcycles look so real up close, loved the Mach 1 too.
Hard to pick one right? Glad I’m not a judge!
Sir your wife is so COOL, it is so nice to see a couple so in tune with each other and on the "same page" I wish you 50 more years together. Good pick!
Thanks 🙏
Love seeing all these models it's a great model contest. I've been building models since I was 12 I'm 36 now and just recently entered a local model building contest for the first time. These models are beautiful I love that black barracuda I'd like to find a model like it.
So many great ones. Like to be able to build like that! The bikes are really amazing
Thank you for the video it was a amazing show
You are welcome! What a contest
Awesomeness and amazingly fantastic love the models that are made to look like the reproduction of the real ones brilliant great video guys
Reproduction class is really hard!! Document the prototype in depth. Then match it exactly. Fun! They do that in model railroading too and in whole railroads. Document a place. Then build a model railroad that exactly matches that area. I saw a reproduction of the golden spike. Both trains. All the tents and telegraph polls and people. Wow!
This is cool to see, I've never been able to get to GSL but I've been to NNL East in New Jersey for most of the past 10 years (started going a year or two after they moved from Parsippany to Wayne).
It’s been really need to have this going on in our backyard and to be able to enter it in the past. I have not entered it now in over 10 years but keep imagining that I will at some point but if I don’t enter this next one I never will I guess!
Thanks For the Great Video...
Im new to the hobby. I find it to be like a mind massage every time I work on a kit. Im building Christine right now. Cant wait to paint!
Paint is the hardest part for me. Scary hard.
When I was a kid in the late 60s early 70s the diecast cars etc were pretty much just hollow shells with just a small moulded piece of plastic for the seats and steering wheel. But today? Incredible quality and details. They are in themselves pieces of diecast art. Love em.👍🇦🇺🤪
Need to watch out for the rip offs. But yea. Some really great die casts out there now.
That show is definitely on my bucket list. 2022 was supposed to be the very last GSLMCC, it's been pushed back to 2023 now. I hope I'm in a position to go then.
I had not heard it was pushed back. I am glad to hear that!
Hi great video love the details on these models wish there was a show in the uk 🇬🇧
The huge IPMS show is there in Telford in October. Scale Model World. It’s amazing. We hope to go.
Toy Man Television thanks for the information will look out for this event 👍🏻👍🏻
WOW. My favorite car had to be the Cadillac Low Rider, strictly to look at... beautiful.
One question, though. You mentioned at the top of the video that the guy who put on these fabulous shows isn't going to do them anymore? Is anyone going to carry the torch?? These shows must continue, for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. This is true art.
Great video felt like I was there at the show with you! Sure hope chad smith won something his name was on quite a few cars.
The video is very well done, I like it so much. Thank you
its a great show, but a really great vid too. thanks
Amazing diecast models.Thanks.
Espectacular Maravillosa Exposicion Felicitaciones desde la PRECIOSA CALIFORNIA 🍇🥑🍊🥑🍇🥑🍊🥑🍇🥑🍊
Hello! This has always been a great contest. But the last few have been historic
Some great models and thanks for sharing.
Mike
Thanks. Really fun show. The Super 7 won best of show. 100% scratch.
@@ToyManTelevision I get that. It was a super model.
Mike
I'm working on that Mustang Funny Car, in the first of the vid, myself, as we speak!!! And yes, I'm going to trick it out, with all the wires, hoses, ect!!! I love this hobby!!! .......Please, keep these videos coming, we love them!! .......... Peace!!!
Make it cool!!!’
I can remember building model car's with the kid's in the neighborhood. Our local hobby store was D&M hobbys in Plymouth Minnesota and they would display our models in the front window... I'm 51 now and this gets my juices going again!!! I remember the other kids were amazed that my twin and I would make spark plug wires out of thread and make dents with a lighter and a nail.....ah good times
Bag and build one!!!! It’s even better at 51!
I would not want to be a judge That would be far too difficult this was absolutely amazing thanks for sharing
Yup!! Can’t even imagine
Amazing craftsmanship. Love it.
THe Super 7 is sooooooo amazing. Found out later it won Best of Show. 100% scratch. Even tires
I’ve got my Dad’s slot car collection, including several cars, bodies, controllers and toolbox. I used to race in Novice class for about a year or so in late sixties in SoCal.
The Best of the Best for sure! Wow!
Just finished Sunday’s show part 3. It’s great
Almost as good as going to a real car show. Great video work.
Great video. Yes one more in 3 years and then all done.
Sad but true. All things end. I’m betting something replaces it. There is talk. So who can say?
Most of them are very good models, but the others are incredible real. So much details, and perfect paint. I'm sure that most real cars have less perfect paint job.
The paint takes the cake. And pie. And ice cream. Every car perfect paint. And flames and lettering. All with brush and air brush.
Amazing models...love it
Right?? Back in three years.
I love the background music so much
very awesome builds thank you for sharing
More Sunday
Ok love the video I was wondering if u noticed on the caddy lowe rider. It was right hand drive. U didn't mention it. I thought that was a cool touch.
Thanks For all . Big up from France 👍👍
I lived there in 72. Paris. Going to school. We really want to get there. I want to revisit my favorite spots. And show Karyn where I went to school
Ha ha...loving the background music in the intro (0:05 to 1:33) guys. Nice one. Actually...background music throughout, fantastic.
Thanks. Some weird music in places. Had some fun with that.
@@ToyManTelevision It suited each scene, the way you arranged it.
Great video guys,... Where I'm from you can barely find a model kit store, but seriously... revell only, and not the North Revell ones. I love those vintage USA kits, especially corvettes and pontiacs and so much more... If I want a kit like this, I need to pay a fortune, price + shipping + import fees + customs. It's crazy. Just recently I found an AMT Foxy Vette for $65 but then it became 130 usd with all the fees and shipping. And I will still have to pay for customs.
Gee. Nuts! Friend in Great Britain who has this issue. Things end up costing about 50% over US price
That was really neat, you have to question people's patience to do some of those models like that. A friend of mine used to compete in model shows like this. I had a stock 48 Ford pickup and a stock 62 Ford Galaxie that he came over and took all kinds of photos of for references for two of his builds.
I don't have the patience to sit down and build model cars yet I'll sit down and do aircraft particularly the vintage models.
I don't think of it as patience, just a sort of zen mind set. Just focus on the part or the paint and enjoy the work.
@@ToyManTelevision I think you're right.
Seeing the slot cars was a brush of the past. There was one hobby shop in Everett that had slot car drag race track and of course the road race course. As a remember they would have meetings every Saturday night for race night next time I'm in Everett I'm going to have to swing in there and see if they still have the slot car set up
As one getting back into hobby after over 30 years really enjoyed the show. Would love to see an update on Karen's Impala and your Lotus
Need to show at least the progress on those.
props for "Lead sled" shoutout . . "Kustom" cars invented and popularized in the 1950s by George Barris. . .
Cool model of Barris’ Beverly hillbillies truck in Bart 2. Went to his shop in the 70’s. Way cool 😎
My first new job out of high school was at AMT in Troy Mich. as a apprentice draftsman. It was quite a process making those kits. People would be surprised.
It was their preference to hire the youngest possible people as they thought they were closer to the market. Most of their customers were around 14 years old. They were even hiring high school kids to do design work. Back then that was legal
@@ToyManTelevision When I was there in 1966 there was not any high school kids working there. All were adults except the apprentices. Even production workers were out of high school.
I would love to have some of those models. Wow!
Chad owning the pure box built entries....
I gotta know where you got all that music. Definitely enhances an excellently done video! 👍🏻
Hi. It’s really fun to do. I buy it from a web site with rights so I can use it on RUclips. It’s broken up into bars. So I can rearrange it and make it any length. Most is also in tracks by instruments. So I can take out any instrument. I can do a drum solo. Or bass and guitar only. It’s called smart sound. Google it. It’s really fun.
Toy Man Television - ok you have to pay for it so you are not breaking any CR laws. That’s awesome! I would love to add some music like that to my vids. Thanks for the info!
Wow! That's incredible! Amazing models! are any of them shows coming to the chicago area? I for sure would like to attend!😎👍
Hi. Sort of. There is a show called NNL. Moves around but it has an east and west show. Often in the mid west. You can look for dates on www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/forum/12-contests-and-shows/
And the IPMS club and contests in every city and country. IPMS is from the UK but the US contest is amazing
Not as good as GSL. But as big. But the quality of models at GSL is unique. And sadly coming to an end.
@@ToyManTelevision thank you😎👍
Wow!!! I'm actually in the process of building a car right now when I turned on your video I froze with a part in my hand and did not move the entire time . Honey I shrunk The cars
Rob Hawk super! What ya building?
@@ToyManTelevision Revell's Orange Crate . This is the first kid I've built in about 20 years .
@@ToyManTelevision just in the last month or two I've started putting my hobby back together . Do to a self-inflicted tragedy I lost absolutely everything I ever owned . I had original kits that dated back to the date of my birth 1962 and now I have three kits limited tools and I am enjoying getting back into it , your video was very motivational thank you
Great pics
Thanks for sharing was fun 😊😊😊
