    ABOUT VEDANTA
    Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
    ABOUT US
    Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

    Swami's profound practice appears deceptively simple because it is based on extensive personal experience. What he imparts in a short span of time embodies a lifetime of dedication and discipline, akin to how scientists invest years to simplify complex concepts into user-friendly tools or technologies that we can access with a mere click of a button. Forever Grateful.. shat Shat naman 🙏🙇🏻‍♀️🙏🙇🏻‍♀️

    Namaste from Kathmandu, Napal. I am a software developer (and so I think 🙂) trapped in my flat due to the ongoing covid-19 crisis. So in all my time alone, I've been listening to you. Thankyou for the series. It has definitely helped me (my mind) understand and be aware of the awareness.
    I started watching you from more than a year now with your IIT lecture on "Who am I?".
    But the question within is still there ... Again, thankyou.

      Interesting statement
      "I am unfortunate enough not to hear you physically at your live classes"
      Who is this "I"
      Where does fortunate and/or unfortunate and/or the absence of these exist and to who does it relate to?
      What is it to "hear" or hear physically, through what and to whom is this being addressed?
      "you" how is this non different to the "I"?
      "Physically"? What physical body? There is only Self.
      "Live"? What is time? what is here, what is then what is there what is nothing what is anything? I abide in the glory of Self.
      "Classes"...
      There is nothing more that can be said.

    Namaskar Swami Ji! If consciousness is pure and its same in all living beings then what leaves the body? And how it's given the new body? In Upanishad it is mentioned that atma has an "avran" of samskars and accounts of bad and good karma that results in getting another body. Pls clear my doubt.

    Swamiji, what happens to awareness when one is unconscious? I was once unconscious. At that time I was not aware of that awareness. If awareness is ever present, then why we r not aware of it during deep sleep or unconscious state?
    My second question is what is the difference between deep sleep and enlightenment.

    Question: when we do this process of leaving eveything outside and the very thing we use to do this is the body mind apparatus, how can you think further of leaving everything outside when you leave the body/mind outside without which we cannot be aware - so dont we need this apparatus to realize the "self" and everything is self in a unified package?

    • @oscillatingspin
      @oscillatingspin 4 года назад +1

      What is meant by leaving the body and mind outside is that you stay still. You stop engaging with thoughts as well as physical sensations; withdraw your attention from them. Simply put, be in silence. Silence of the mind: don't engage with thoughts but just watch them arise and pass, dispassionately. Silence of the body: refrain from unnecessary physical movement and simply watch the senses function naturally,
      rather than engaging with their objects. These two ways of staying still eventually yield a deeper silence. This is essentially what is meant.

    • @onorg1
      @onorg1 3 года назад

      yes u are still aware, without the bodymind, just that memory would not record this event, like in deepsleep, or before birth, but here swami speaks theoratically, not actually, if u could actually leave bodymind, there would be no question about it

    The talk has a few aspects where I found it difficult to follow what Maharaj was trying to convey.
    At 36th min, The example of Absent Rekha (Rekha abhava) where he is asking who is aware. Well the awareness within Rekha right now can witness a mind that imagines a time where Rekha wasn't there and Rekha was a blank. But if we were to go back to that exact period before Rekha how would the awareness that shines thought Rekha feel Rekha Abhava? The awareness that shine forth through Rekha's parents would know but not Rekha's awareness. The only escape from this quagmire could to say all awareness is one etc. But somehow I am not finding convincing enough to agree that Rekha's awareness exists before Rekha.

    • @amit2india
      @amit2india 3 года назад +1

      Beautiful question. The thing is at one point tarka's abilities saturate. We will need to meditate on the point of origin of Rekha. With time it will become clear but it will be beyond words.....As Ramakrishna Paramahansa told once when you boil butter it keeps spluttering till there is water in it. When the water from butter evaporates there is no sound left.

    these two stages of existence remains till one knows the self .ignorance about self is the cause of duality.once self is known simultaneously it is clearly seen that matter merges into one reality , and duality ends. it is not like one knows self first and then he again knows braman separately. because knower is only one .

    Pranams Swamiji!Is the world is maya or projected by Maya? Or world is projected by Avidya that is not knowing Brahman as Brahman which is our real self taken as that is due to Adhyasa world ? Kindly clarify.

    • @samsarin1003
      @samsarin1003 3 года назад

      The world is projected by māyā and hence is a manifest form of māyā, just as spoken words are the projection (manifestation) of the power of speech. That capacity or power to speak is the power of knowledge. Its expression in speech is the manifestation of that power. I know I can speak, I know how to speak and so I speak what I know. Like that, māyā is essentially the power of knowledge, and hence is the cause of its subsequent expression as the world (just as with speech and its power).
      All that is here is knowledge, forms of knowledge, forms of Brahman, made manifest by the power known as māyā. Thus, in this way, pure, unmanifest, unexpressed knowledge (Brahman) appears to be known, appears to manifest by means of its own intrinsic power of knowledge, the (creative) power called māyā.
      Avidyā, ignorance, is an improper recognition or misunderstanding of knowledge, which naturally leads to a mistaken view of that knowledge. That mistaken knowledge of the world is the error of taking something to be what it is not. That error is called adhyāsa. Adhyāsa is the direct consequence of avidyā. Ignorance, being an individual expression of the mysterious power of māyā, is like a cover, due to which mistakes about ignorance and its products are extremely likely. Hence, it is because of ignorance and its power to obscure that which is true that Brahman - and our identity with Brahman - is not appreciated. Not being appreciated or recognised, that identity remains unknown until the error born of adhyāsa is corrected by true knowledge. Then, to use the famous analogy, in the clear light of knowledge the apparent snake is recognised to be a harmless rope. The dim, late evening light had obscured knowledge of the rope. That power of obscuration is the power of ignorance, avidyā. When covered by semi-darkness it is unclear what is there, and the rope, not being seen for what it is, is taken to be what it is not. That mistake, that taking the rope to be what it is not is adhyāsa.

    Swami ji thank you for your grace on us 🙏... I have some doubts about Sat... The Existence... If there is no Chit... There is no scope for existence... And logically I believe existence depends on consciousness (Chit) Therefore I think only Chit is Brahman ( Brahman/chit only self illumining)
    If Chit is depending on Sat... Is that not a dependency of Brahman?
    If there are 2 things like Sat and Chit... Is it not a duality?
    Forgive me if I misunderstood the concept and kindly help my mind in understanding it... Sorry for my bad English
    Also I understood that interdependency is relativity... Where ever relitivity comes into existence there would be world and it is impermanent... So if sat and chit are interdependent then it's a relitivity.... So I was logically thinking only Chit the Brahman is the ultimate truth and not dependent on anything
    I was getting intuition that Chit has become/transformed to sat some how but not sure (one master pointed out I may find answer for this in Chandogya upanishad) . Mind is virtual reality glasses .... And Chit is seeing/perceiving himself like as world therefore sat exists only to our senses through mind ....but the real truth is Chit.... Which is the ultimate Brahman... I feel if I have to define
    Maya In laymen terms is Mind which do avaran and Vikshepas... And gives strong impression about the world and Body. Kindly rectify me... If I am wrong.
    Kindly don't ignore this message 🙏

      The truth whichn exist is only one , this one is not like 1,2,3..., it is different .therefore the word Adwait is formed .
      now sat , chit .anand is not three different things . It is three names given to one reality ,
      Here Sat means which can not be divided further ,Chit means the ultimate knower , anand means its own nature . and these are ultimate Qualities of NIrguna .
      only logic will not make it understand . but only samadhi can clear all doubts .

    Not really on topic but I try it anyway:
    If I am not wrong karma, Jnana and Bhakti yoga should be practiced, or karma yoga results in Bhakti yoga? I am struggling with the concept of Bhakti; as much as I like the practical idea of it, I am a bit confused to whom I sacrifice if I don’t have a personal god as Krishna, Jesus etc. ? Brahman is beyond everything So it can’t be that. Neither does it sound right to choose a deity randomly and force to believe in him. Are there any sources or anything about this? I would be very thankful

      Brahman is without form. To build a relationship with him, you choose a form that resonates with you according to the attributes of that form while remembering that form is still ultimately Brahman. Some like the strength and courage attributes of Hanuman, some like the lover quality of Krishna, others the motherly quality of Shakti etc.

    ...So if in sushupti the experience is same for all beings then what happens to ego in deep sleep.What is the tangible entity that the ego holds onto in the waking state? Is the ego the atman in a deluded state ?

    • @ravindrakulkarni7121

      Ego basically a mechanism act and react based on the energies stored in form of purvkarma .In deep sleep since no input is received from panchendriyas , it seems to be dead .but soon as one wakes up it start working .
      Atma watches this , when it withdraw completely and starts watching self it is samadhi , and freedom .

      @@ravindrakulkarni7121 thanks.. on deeper reflection I think ego uses the mind in the waking state.The impurities.. (as you say a,result of purvakama)of the mind create this false sense of I. However as the mind is absent in deep sleep,
      there s no ego sense too.

      All the three States waking,dream, and shushupti, are the states of body and mind .
      For all these three states soul is a sakshi , it never involved in any state. It simply watches all , and that watching only provides the life to these states . As soon as it refuses to watch these , maya ends , and only self the brahman remains. That's it .

      there is no unconscious state , in deepsleep for example, the memory dont record this event, so you have just instantly forgotten, that u were there....enlightenment is deep sleep with memory recording (samadhi) , ego is mind , there is no mind in deep sleep, ego is not atman.....ego is not holding onto anything, either u use it or not, its your choice....
