Understandable, but it's not really geoguessr fault. Google charged more for using the maps and geoguessr wouldnt be able to afford it, so they had to make a paywall.
I think geotastic is a pretty good alternative, however, it's very difficult to find players to play with. So I used it to train for a while, before subscribing to geoguessr
Don't forget that you can get the ad-free experience with extra perks by using your own Maps API!! There is a tutorial on their website on how to do this. This way, Geotastic does not need to pay for your API usage, and as your personal API usage is so low you will never have to pay yourself either. It's a win-win!
Geoguessr became paid because of how much it costs to use the streetview api, geotastic seems like a great alternative for those who can't afford or don't want to buy a geoguessr subscription and it's good that they're doing well but ads and donations are much more unreliable revenue stream than monthly subscription
if you get your own maps api key for the site (just click on support), you get permanent unlocked custom online and local access (any nmpz, nm on any map alone or with friends) + ad free you'll have to attach a payment method for the API key to work but as the site says, you wont ever have to pay anything unless you are hosting 600 10 player games a month.
I would still prefer to play on geoguessr, even tho it’s paid. The locations and maps are just much better and it’s way more professional, but I agree it’s a good alternative

for an even easier solution simply go to geotastic home and then in the URL, replace home with local-lobby
