Today is a film about an outwardly successful couple whose happy days are a thing of the past. They are caught in a vicious cycle, stuck in one time within dark impenetrable void. This is emblematic of the struggle that survivors of domestic abuse / violence face every day.
What will Today bring? She constantly tries to keep the light in this relationship shining, to keep the dark at bay. He seems to think that putting a roof over her head entitles him to behave however he sees fit. He cannot sense the dark emptiness created by his control which follows him around and traps them without the means to move forward. He is as much a victim of his own behaviour as is she, but it's her that suffers at his hand. Will she learn enough about the situation to see a way out, is tomorrow beyond the void?

The intense and horrific cycle of abuse that seems impossible to escape from. The increasing worthlessness of self to a point where you believe there is no where to go And yet...and yet......you can break the chain by taking a huge and scary leap into that dark unknown and find salvation and happiness. Great movie...beautifully expressed.

Are they some sort of consciousness created by the moon landing; a piece of the astronauts consciousness. And as such, sentenced to live within a fragment of another beings consciousness, until, at least the women, breaks-out, finds meaning and and independent existence. Very odd.

I think this is the real explanation, because at the end or conclusion, it appears that she is OLDER, and he PROLLY, has passed away! (By a Heart Attack it looks like the way he was wound soo tight!) And she has the Plumbers card because he "hubby" never did fix their broken pipe! "SLACKER"

This Dust film got to me. Lived it everyday throughout my childhood and teen years until my mom finally had enough courage to leave. Wish y'all could have had enough time to include children because they are the victims that carry the scars throughout life. I'm 61 and it still effects me the same today.
I liked the subtle power shift, when she discovers that her abuser is just as terrified of the darkness as she is. And he knows that the power is shifted, he is losing control of her. Because of that, I believe that she broke free of him.

the out of place dinner knife was confirmation of his controlling abusive nature... the broken plate and damage to her face at the start was the introduction to it being a thing... also the super quietness after the huge blow up.... reminded me of my childhood .

Ok, what came to my mind: they both are in some kind of hell or limbo, as they both are guilty - he for the way he's been treating his wife. She - and it's just a possibility, but perhaps... for poisoning him (or maybe such thoughts only) instead of looking for another solution... She keeps trying different solutions but most of them are only similar. She will get free only after she thinks outside the box (pun intended) and goes outside. (BTW there are other movies or short films using this about the person repeating the same day over and over again as they are caught in hell). But of course it can be also a metaphor of our own hell we're living in when we are repeating the same mistakes and schemes in our lives...

which is quite frankly true but what many levels of hell or damnations or purgatories or levels of evil or this could be an aperture because they say that our body is in our own and we're in a shell and we're in this world and not of this world so sometimes a fleshly shell or the body such as the carcass let alone many other structure within it could be holding to one self or a particular part or position or place or reference to the other opposite and not in a demeaning manner and is not maybe to unable to let go also a level of magnetics beyond space and time could be holding things to pull things closer throughout the I guess Intergalactic realms and many other places uncharted you know
Wow. I watched it a second time this morning with my wife and she totally got it. "The claustrophobia of abuse," she called it. I didn't quite get it when watching it for the first time last night by myself. Perhaps it is because it was on Dust where I expect scifi, but it is more likely because I have not lived through abuse, and she has as a child. The take I get on it now, is that it is PTSD as @Drachenfrau indicated:
The majority of the film is essentially what is going through her head as she stands in the yard at the end of the film, with the water running at her feet while holding the business card. She knows intellectually that her husband is no longer there to stop her, but due to an extended period of time in the abusive cycle, her brain has wired itself to force her to go through these kinds of thoughts every time she feels a need to reach out to others, to call the plumber.
My take on the the husband asking the plumber how he got there (I'm still stuck on that) perhaps is perhaps him wanting to figure out if the wife called him. My wife says he represents hope and the husband wants to know where this hope came from. I'm still not sure where this scene fits in.
Of course, at the end, the husband chases her right out into the void, so a darker take on this could be that she's out there twenty years later, terrified to call the plumber because she's still married to him and he'll beat the shit out of her if she does. Straight up TSD, without the P.

Nice one, I already responded to your first post but glad you saw it again and reflected some more on it. I don't think the end scene is your 'dark' interpretation! Hahaha :-) I'd like to think that this is a redemptive moment where she is strong enough to reflect on the nightmare the she is now out of.
I think the plumber does represent hope. How many times have you heard that it was the simple act of a good samaritan that helped a victim of abuse to get out of that situation and get the help that they need. So perhaps the husband's reaction is disbelief that someone penetrated his bubble of fear and control.
It's also possible that the husband's reaction was a reflection of his own trauma, that he was trapped in a relationship that offered him no hope or way out from the cycle of mundanity and, perhaps, this was part of the motive for his controlling behaviour.

Amazing how some memories can come over and over. Mainly when they are painful and when some events happened many times. This film touched me. I totally related to the scene where the guy is leaving the house and floating in the "space" and asks for help; and she grabs him bringing him back. That's part of most cycles of abuse: we let them come back or we bring them back. It's a hard dependency... what if there's really nothing else out there for me? What if I would be left alone? Some cycles are too long that you don't know what's out or how to live out there....

No, it's not part of "most" "cycles of abuse". It's the one specific pattern of abuse that feminists have made into a big cause of theirs, because this is the one specific pattern of DV that can be used to demonize men effectively if you convince the general population that it is the only pattern that exists.

Excellent portrayal of what domestic abuse feels like. The only way to save your sanity is to make that leap into the unknown. It often takes years to decide and years to recover.

Even after you're free, you get stuck living it in your mind, over and over and over, to the point it feels like it's still happening.
This was right up there with Donnie Darko on the Strangeometer! It was good, though... EXCELLENT job of mimicking a 1960's era setting.

There are videos on RUclips where they sort of simulate what it looks like having Alzheimer's. Truly awful.
I had a patient once who would walk up and down the hall. I had to walk up and down that hall too. He would stop me every time he saw me and say, “excuse me miss, can you tell me what time it is?” I would look at my watch and tell him, dozens of times a day. I always acted like it was a one time thing. He was a polite older gentleman.
My triggers. The Light. When my ex &I built our house, light fixtures were chandellier type, 5 to 10 bulbs in each. He put one bulb in for each 4 needed. 15 years of feeling in the dark. I thought abuse was hitting. I kept telling myself control wasn't abuse, insults and humiliation wasn't abuse -- lack of light wasn't abuse. And that anything outside my marriage would be terryifying alone. Raise my boys alone? Be alone?
But at the same time, your heart sinks, every time, when you hear his car pull in the driveway.
The card of the plumber represents freedom.
Freedom to make your own choices.
Freedom to not have to ask permission to make a phone call for a repair. Freedom to have as many light bulbs as you want and to leave them on all fu$king night and day if you want. Freedom to eat what you choose for meal and to have friends and to shop for a simple purse just because you want to. Freedom to make your own choice in all things (even if you make a few mistakes).
I"m free for 22 years now. Never remarried. I cannot give up my freedom of choice to anyone.
But this movie.... I can still feel this. Feel the room going dark. Feel the fear of stepping away into an unknown void but you've reached a point where any unknown where you can make your own choices has to be better than what you know.
Thank you for this movie. This is powerful, self changing, and beams a strong light on the repression of abuse. I can only hope that someone watching this and wakes up. There is no change possible in a controlling man (or woman). Control is all they have and they will never let that go. A suppressed person, a victim, will never be able to breathe or to see the light if they stay.
Being alone and maybe lonely at times, is far superior to being with someone who makes you feel alone.
Get a cat. And be free to laugh when ever you want.
And if you want to... leave all the lights on. In every room.

Interesting take on PTSD. The set was amazingly well-done. Reminded me so much of places I grew up in, in the 70's. Thanks for the trigger warning for those of us who have survived this kind of shit. My mother lived this and I remembered it. Your vid was frankly tame in comparison.
yea it felt like my grandmothers place she had a red pedal car waiting for me when i came over that id ride up and down a perfect asphalted drive way and apple trees in the backyard that i would eat... the small green and red ones ...
This one is rather trippy.
Also, at first I thought "There's nothing out there." referred to a negative outlook toward the space program, then it was literally nothing out there. I'm going to have watch this again sometime - maybe I'll pick up a few clues that I missed the first go-round.
The set is superb though. I'm always curious with retro scenes whether antiques have to be found or objects built that just _look like_ they're authentic.

For bigger budget productions there are companies that rent or sell period furniture. My ex has a company that sells this type of retro furniture. The type is mid century modern. It’s very popular stuff these days.

Living in an abusive relationship can be very isolating... and hopeless... it takes wanting to get out of the situation.... and looking to others for courage.
So, in her mind, she was still trapped in the abusive relationship with her then (now deceased?) husband, and she finally found the strength to break free. Nice, very nice.

Plot: Man and a woman in violent relationship a strange world. There s not that much story, rather repeated pattern, but it reveals something, although it is never revealed clearly, what it was about. I saw many movies about humans being in ET zoo, that this one confused me a lot. Or was it just an allegory of a relationship? This really got me into thinking. Finally: OK, it was an allegory, due to: 1) the boxes of the bulbs show, that it was no time loop or something like that; 2) the end, it was just normal reality, no zoos, no holographic projections, no androids playing roles…
Negatives: I found nothing
Positives: 1) acting, both of them; 2) setting - you really worked on that! 3) confusing (originally put into negatives), but at the end, it is well tuned and makes sense, so: one positive more DING!
Personal note: It got me! Even when confused, I had to think about it (I usually do not put that much into confusing things…) So, You got me!
Summary: Very good short and very heavy! It leaves something.
As someone born in 1957,I love the period pieces that are emblematic of that era....that era when men/dads/husbands....were real effing miserable over-bearing pigs.I think they were miserable because they were trapped. Society said you will do nothing with your life but get married,have kids and work to support them. You won't see the world, you won't do anything else but that. "There's nothing out there...for you." Good flick. P.S.- That's why I never got married. And I've done amazing things....and I've even seen part of the world.

It’s a metaphor for being stuck in an abusive relationship and having been coerced into believing that there is no alternative, despite all the signs that there is something wrong. In this case the person succeeds in escaping.

This is intense to watch the circle of violence that repeats itself over and over for this poor abused woman. A metaphor that beyond her current state of abuse is told repeatedly, "there is nothing out there". The darkness represents the helplessness is all in her head, but in the end she gets the courage to break free from the illusion of darkness of the unknown that melts away and see the light once outside. Hope in the end at last. I'm glad I watched this.
Yeah, this is good, repeated groundhog days in the hundreds, 70’s, fixated past trauma and its future effects, when the escape….
She escaped the cycle of abuse by making him disappear, the poison. Her older self mind and reality reliving past, but needing a pipe to be fixed by a plumber in present. Complex, deeper.

I think there has to be a particular part of hell for domestic abusers, a good short, intense and thought provoking and discomforting having witnessed my parents carry out warfare against each other, that sort of thing never leaves you.
But one thing I did learn that violence and mental warfare can really mess your life up if you let it, don’t give it that power and break the cycle.
This didn't have to be set in the 60s. It still goes on today.
Wow, reading the comments it seems I had a whole different take on this. I thought at the end it seems the husband was really some sort of alien intelligence trying desperately to fit in and had sort of trapped the lady in a space/time bubble. She finally broke it by leaving him. I loved the image of the stacked light bulb boxes. That said though, it ALSO is layered with the domestic violence angle, he doesn't know how else to act. It's all alien to him.
This was very good. From set design, costume, lighting, acting, sound, direction, etc….it really pulled me in. Cant say I understood it all in the moment but with the gorgeous actress…i could not look away. Great job everyone involved.

Great film but damn that domestic violence boiled my blood. I hate cowards that abuse people or creatures unable to defend themselves, it is the weak, cowardly and predatory behaviour of an animal that should be put down.
The correct response to psychoiogical or even moral failings is not murder. It depends on the situation, but there are so many mays to deal with domestic abuse that don't require anyone to die.
@@thumper8684 you misunderstand and cannot comprehend the mind of a predator unless you have worked with them. They exploit systems and people that give them "understanding" and an excuse for their continuous offending. Unable and/or unwilling to extend sympathy to innocent victims, they will and do repeat offend the moment you take your eyes off them. You cannot stop them or appeal to a predator that simply sees weaker individuals as prey. But hey, let's continue to allow them to rape, abuse and create a trail of destruction and victims that will never recover, quite often taking their own lives. You know nothing of predators and victims.

Lovely work. Really reminiscent of those 70s and 80s sci-fi series that didn't rely on flashy effects but were all about the storylines and psychology. Think "Sapphire and Steel" for UK viewers!

What a courageous piece. Well written. Certain there will be viewers who'll understand and connect with how difficult it is to ask for help and escape the constant trauma of abuse.
Curious; why no drinks on the dining table? (*addendum--because there is no water?). Love the late 60s décor; we had one of those sectional couches covered in a weird silver, metallic weave, so space--like; everything from the mid 60s forward seemed to have "The Jetsons" look. We even had a silver Christmas tree! Oh! had to watch this in bits through the day because busy, but I also noticed the clock on the wall--WE HAD ONE ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THAT!

Of course, we can't know how this story began or how many times the two characters lived that day over but the vegetation and the clear-running water and the very fact that the woman was out of doors indicates that the cycle had ended and she was free. The only question that remains is whether bursting through the barrier that kept her trapped was the solution or if it was the rat-poison...?

There have been so many uncaring film makers on dust who casually spring horror on us with no apparent moral compass or empathy for gentle people. Your simple act earned my 'like' and 'subscribe' - btw the ending of this one made me smile. They both got what they deserved...
Are you really that afraid of the world? Maybe you've had some bad luck. It's impossible for people to cater for everyone else's individual feelings and preferences.

To me any European show they speak really f low always have to max out my speakers to hear them talk
Nice. Very twilightzony. My only *very minor* gripe is that the accents are modern Australian. 60's accents would have made it a little more authentic.
