  • First time reaction to Extreme "Mutha (Don't Wanna go to School Today) from the 1989 self-titled album Extreme. Like most people I heard the mega ballad "More than Words" from Extreme, but not much else, I sure haven't heard this song, so does it rock? Kelly want's us to check it out!
Extreme is an American rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1985, currently headed by frontman Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. The band reached the height of their popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s with original line-up Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Paul Geary and Patrick Badger.

Totally loved it! Thanks Kelly! I did really like Extreme, it’s just been a while since I really thought about them. Of course you hear “More Than Words” on SXM Hair Nation occasionally. I’m a sucker for those ballads. This was just pure fun!

Nuno Bettencourt is one of my favorite guitarist/songwriters of all time! I first heard them in 1989 on Bill and Ted's excellent Adventure and was hooked! Saw them in 91 opening for ZZ Top then headlining with Saigon Kick in 93 and again in 2008! This song and all of their first album is exellent, their second Pornograffitti even better, but my all time favorite of theirs and one of my top 5 of all time is their 1992 album "III Sides to Every Story - yours, mine and the truth" I would also recommend checking out their Queen medley at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert which earned them even more fans. Great pic Kelly and I was actually going to suggest this song or Kid Ego or King of the Ladies for Shane to check out. Also I'm happy to say Nuno and Steve Vai and Zakk Wyld have all become friends and toured together (with Yngwie!) on the Generation Axe concerts the past 5 years. Did I mention I'm an Extreme Fanatic!

This has been my life's theme song ever since its initial release, and remains so today. Most meaningful song in my adult life, for sure.

Excellent pick, Kelly!! 🤘💗 This one was actually on my reserve list, along with KID EGO! (Endorsements, anyone????) Nuno was not hard on the eyes, I'll tell you that! This is also the 2nd time Gary Cherone has come up in less than 24 hours, since I commented on the Van Halen clip that I feel bad that he is seemingly persona non grata in that band's history. Look at him totally rocking out those bike shorts in a Milli Vanilli "Who Wears It Better?" showdown!! I totally forgot about the kid sneaking in via the ladies room...in theory, he really should have been immediately asphyxiated on hairspray and not have made it to the dressing room...BUT, as Shane pointed out (and questioned), this show was taking place IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY - and during the week!! - for reasons unknown, sooooooo.... I kind of lost track of Extreme's music after the III Sides to Every Story album (which was awesome and very underrated in my opinion), and I would consider this debut album and Pornograffitti must-haves for the era.

The video version cuts out the blistering guitar solo at the beginning of the song.
If you want a sample of just how great Nuno Bettencourt is, check out a song called Midnight Express, especially the live version: ruclips.net/video/TTpyRCNbqy8/видео.html
My favorite Extreme album is Pornograffiti. The ballads are great, but the rest is one slammin' energetic track after another. Decadence Dance, It's a Monster, & When I'm President are all killer examples.

I couldn't say what I think about Extreme without spending five days on it. So I just can say they're monsters. More than words is a beautiful song but it doesn't represent all that they are. Far from it. Their five albums are all different one from the other, but always freaking good. High quality of music. I saw them live, they're even better on a stage. The last time was in 2014. That was unforgatable. Nuno did some other solo projects which worth to be listen to, I can tell you this. Well, Extreme is the band of a living. They're my band since I'm 16 and I'm 46 today. So... That means all, right?
If you don't know them yet, run get any album from them, you wasted enough time 🤘

According to Nuno this song is completely inspired by Van Halen Unchained

    "I've never heard of a mid-day concert" 🤣🤣🤣
For the record, I saw Alice Cooper play a mid-day (free) concert on the steps of a local city hall building once. So they do happen. And Extreme was *soooo* much more than "More Than Words"...I hated that song with a passion from day one, and I think it actually wound up hurting the band in the long run because of the flack they took for it from the metal crowd, but they could flat out _shred_ on their harder tracks. That whole first album was great!

Heavy Van Halen vibes. They sound like really good musicians, but I don't understand where they come up with lyrics like this.
Was this how this song was made?
Singer: Guys what do you think of this? "Mutha, I don't want to go to schooooooool today"
    Band: That sounds................... EXTREME!!!!!!!
Cheesy lyrics, but if I'm being honest I would've loved this song as a kid.

I will take this over "More than words" anyday ! It is pretty good in my opinion ! Fun & good melody that if released 20 years earlier would of been a favorite of mine ! Gary is worth checking out in a live clip with VH doing "Ain't talking 'bout love" in a live performance when he flops down the stairs w/o missing a beat ! It is really cool and it made me laugh !
