Cub Cadet XT1 50 Hour Review

- 50 hours of mowing in less than a year! 15 acres of pasture was mowed on several occasions to field test this model. We review the blades, our maintenance, what we like and don't like about this mower.
Thanks for a good honest review. My first Cub Cadet was a snow blower that I love. With the reliability of it and the excellent customer service from our local Cub Cadet dealer it was a no brainer to look for a cubby when it was time to replace our 23 year old lawn tractor that came with the house. We pulled the trigger on a 42” xt2 and never looked back.
I just bought mine a month ago have 8 hrs on it. Love everything about this rider. Replacing a Scotts 20/48 got 21 years out of it and the 20hp v twin kohler still running strong. the Scotts was made by John Deer when they actually made strong riding mower tractors.If this machine is half of what that one is I made a great decision on buying a new one. I've already compared, it is.
I just bought the 50in with the welded/manufactured deck, so glad I didnt go with the John Deere. Freaking love it so far! Took on the over grown barn lot like a champ!
I have the 42 inch cut and I can get different blades for mine. My gripe on the blades is regular blades wear out too quick and need sharpened, mulch blades stay sharp longer but tend to catch easily if the ground is too rough and very hard to sharpen. I plan this year to try the gator also called extreme blade. Bought mine in 2017 and have 150 hours on it. Runs great, use it to clear snow in winter and it's powerful enough to handle a foot of wet heavy snow

Do you use a blower or a blade for the snow? Any tricks for traction?... Chains&Weight?
In my humble opinion, I found moving to Texas solved all of my snow problems ;)

great video, very imformative, i just bought my xt1 50 inch today and am going down tommorow to get the snowblower/cabin/chains/weight attachments, i don't cut hay and have a little less than an acre so it should be no problem if not over kill for me, but the dual purpose blower/mower plus the high quality craftsmanship is what sold me on, excited for a snow storm now.

I have the same tractor. I really like it if you want your tractor to last for a long time keep it your garage or shed. Some people keep there tractor outside under a tarp this worse than leaving it outside without a tarp the ground moisture will rust out the deck and cause corrosion on the wiring system which can lead to a lot of problems

Have the same model have snow blade with chain works excellent with 6 in or less had my doubts but worked good but is hard on mower blade also blade assembly had to replace both
Gator blades with the serrated back edge on them, they are much heavier than the ones that come on these . I changed mine out after mowing one time they stir up to much dust with that high lift blade
You can buy Oregon blades for your tractor that are heavier duty, mulching, sand, etc. you don't have to buy Cub Cadet blades and given your large mowing demand you need some heavy duty blades LOL. I am on my 1st set of blades, but I have 2 sets, I put the sharp set on, and set the other set over by the grinder to sharpen and put on the shelf for the next time.
Great review BTW. I just have the XT1 42" 18HP model with a 42" snow blower attachment for the winter...that is if we ever get any snow, last season I only got to use the blower once and that was with only 8" of snow, it worked great but need more snow LOL.
I only mow about 1 acre LOL, about 31 hours on mine, love it, wish I had the money to get the XT3 garden tractor but the XT1 seems to be doing a great job.

@@thechickenpoop3373 I had to buy Oregon blades for my Craftsman lawn tractor because it seemed like a blade of grass would dull/bend them...once I switched to Oregon blades I never had any issues afterwards.
I just bought one of these, but mine came with a fabricated deck instead of a stamped deck.
I worry about the transmission though. Our last Cub had the transmission go out. I hope the newer ones are better built.
After 60 hours, we still have no transmission issues.
The reverse on my cub cadet xt1 is a joke it won’t back up a small incline and moves slow on level ground

@@stevenstout2004 Apparently grass clipping get stuck below the deck (which is hard to see from the top) in an area that prevents you from fully applying pressure in the reverse direction. It just needs to get cleaned out. It is recommended to air-blow the deck and below the deck with forced air.
I would suggest not using a fuel stabilizer unless you plan to store the tractor for a long time( 6 months or more). Continued use will gum up the fuel system over time and turn into a thick jelly. What I would do now is change the fuel filter if you haven't done so. A friend of mine does small engine repair and that's his #1 gripe, but he says it keeps him in business! I just bought the same tractor with the plow. Your video was very informative, thanks!
Fuel stabilizers do not work, they are a scam! I run all of my cub cadets on Turbo Blue. Pump gas is pathetic and goes stale in less than 10 days. You will never have carb problems running any engine on Turbo Blue
@@danfrazier8387 Pump gas going stale in 10 days no way. I live in New England and my lawn mower & snow thrower sit idle for about 5 months of the year and even the boat and I just top them off before the seasons 1st use and they are fine. I did use stabilizer for the boat one year but didn't notice any benefits.
@@CapeAnnImages Gas must be a better quality where you live? If your vehicle didn't have a 10,000 volt ignition system it wouldn't run on pump gas. Yes, gas goes stale in 10 days! Pump a gallon in a can, wait 10 days and then smell it and see for yourself
@@danfrazier8387 You must have a warmer climate where water vapor can form in the gas tank. I've put gas from boats that were stored on land for years into my vehicles with no issues. My 9 year old snow thrower sat from last March 2018 to January 2019 with a full tank of gas and started on the 1st try!
@@danfrazier8387 maybe like a month but its not goin to be bad in 10days thats crazy i fill my car up like every 3 weeks and it runs great if 10 days was the case everyone would have problems with their cars cuz most people go more then 10days
8:45 the blades going bad quick is a usual i would simply recommend changing blades before the first cut
You are mowing 15 acres!? With just a 50" deck? I would add two powered tow-behind decks to almost triple the cutting width and reduce mowing time to well under half what it is taking you now. Or perhaps I mis-understand what your mowing requirements are. Btw, hydrostatic transmissions are pretty much standard on any lawn tractor that is not a toy, as is the ability to mow in reverse. Glad to see you wear hearing protection. I double up with both foam ear-inserts and an external head set as you show here.

you mentioned the effect of rough ground and the results on the operators body:
I've had my XT1 for several years. We mow an airport that LOTS of animals (deer, elk, etc) use for their main route to the water in a creek that runs along side the airport.
The result is hundreds/thousands of hoof prints pressed deep into the grass.
When mowing, the mower is constantly being subjected to jolting as the wheels run over all those hoof holes.
(we have tried to use a landscape rake to smooth the ground. It doesn't seem to help.)
The result is, the next morning, lots of pain in my lower back.
That lack of a smooth ride is my only complaint about the mower,
I am right there with you. You might try a lower back brace (from Walmart) and see if that helps.
I have this Cubby with a 46” deck. My back lawn is just starting to recover from a hog invasion a few years ago; makes for a rough ride, alright. However, my Toro rides just as rough, if not worse. So, is there really a lawn tractor out there that doesn’t beat you up a bit on rough terrain? Not sure you can fault Cub Cadet for that....

I have this exact mower that I mow 5 acres with. How am I going to convince my wife that I need a new XT1 ST54 to assist my XT1 LT50 if you are mowing 15 acres with yours. 😂
You should turn engine to idle before shutting off.
Manual states leaving the throttle on high is recommended

Mine ,AGM battery failed at 35 hours, at 66 hours transmission failed, i will not recommend Cub Cadet or a MTD at all
First off people don’t shut off your machine at or close to a full throttle...EVER....great way to bend a push rod......lil info passed on to me by a mower mechanic...I think also this gentlemen needs a larger tractor....this is a lot of land......
First off, thank you for your comment. I'll start off with the 2nd part first. We do have a 30 hp tractor to mow the pasture. Because the Cub Cadet XT1 LT50 was brand new to market, when we purchased it, we wanted to get to a 50 hour mark as fast and realistically as possible. So we used it to mow the pastures for one season. Secondly, we truly appreciate your first comment as it caused us to contact Kohler to get more information. While, what you said is no longer the case, we will be addressing your concern in more depth, in an article to be posted on TheChickenPoop.com later this week.

I have the xt1 GT50 with 75 hours on it. I just had a stuck valve which bent a push rod. Like I have time for that.
Just wondering if you have kept the oil changed regularly and use the OEM oil filter? Pretty rare to have one of those engines have internal damage
@@RTXti-ld7dx yes I do the regular maintenance as this has Bluetooth and it reminds me. Also I had the spindles that came without grease fittings and one went bad at 50 hours and I chewed some belts up. So I replaced all 3 spindles with new ones that have zirks so hopefully it will last longer. Not sure how an expensive garden tractor could be built so poorly. Probably wouldn't buy another cub cadet based on that.
mulch kits are 89 at home depot......
The very first oil change should’ve been done with in 15 hours. And I have 50.7 sounds like yours rattles when you shut yours off.
I appreciate your comment but as per Kohler the first oil change is at 50 hrs. You are welcome to change at 15 but the newer engines don't require the older engine break in time
You mow all that with a rider? You need a commercial zero turn or large tractor with finishing mower on it or just a simple bush hog. That mower isn't made for that large of property in my opinion.
They reason for mowing all of that is to show a review of the mower while it is still “new”. If we waited to show this review later there might be newer models out and we want our viewers to get a chance to see this model in action. I own a 64 hp tractor to mow the fields.
