Great scene of a mother’s love and hurting inside because her son has lost so much. Miss Ellie comes to her senses and realizes her mistake hearing JR and seeing her husband’s portrait. The producers knew how to set a mighty powerful scene on Dallas!
This was one of the few times where Miss Ellie showed that she loved JR, the other time was when he was shot, but she couldn’t lose him, she may not have liked him at times but she certainly did love him
Jr always portrayed a cold side except, when it came to Ewing oil. JR felt it was his duty to protect what his Daddy 'Jock' company which he had worked hard for. Ms Ellie always loved her children, for right or wrong .
JR dispite all his faults and he has many. deep down he cared and loved his family. JR allways wanted Ewing Oil to himself since he was the oldest son and felt he deserves it more then Bobby, Gary and even Ray. he may have wanted the brothers to run the company with him but he wanted to be in charge and have the final say. Then pass on to his son.
Larry Hagman’s decision to take the role of Dallas was mainly because he wanted to work with Barbara Bel Geddes and they became very great friends in real life.
That was a SMALL part of it, he said she was a “class act”. He loved the role and mainly needed $$. He said he was “broke”, in 1977, which I doubt has the same meaning of normal people being broke.
You can not just replace JR Ewing. There is only one person who can play him. They are have a funeral for JR in season 2. But Larry Hagman completed 7 episodes, so it will be later in the season.
Although I don't care for the "Dream Season", I loved the emotion J.R. showed towards losing Bobby. This season alone, should have earned Mr. Hagman an Emmy nomination if not the win!!!
J.R. may have been many things but there's one thing he didn't fake was the love he had for his family and could've been stronger than all the money, power, and woman he could had.
Yeah, that's why I also liked dream season, the developing relationship between Miss Ellie and her first son. Ellie was never closer to JR like in the dream season. In the other seasons JR was often treated like a stepson, his parents never loved him as openly as they loved his brothers. Jock's favourite son was always Bobby, Ellie's was Gary...
Jock loved Bobby and JR equally but in different ways, he loved and favoured and trusted JR to do what needed to be done and he loved and favoured Bobby for his goodness, He certainly favoured both sons above Gary and Ray
The show MIGHT have lasted 3 more years. If Duffy hadn’t returned, there would probably never have been any tv reunion movies and certainly no TNT reboot.
The original storylines had they not brought Bobby back were the following 1: Sue Ellen is blinded by the explosion temporarily 2: Mark’s deaths was to be a mystery 3: JR and Pam would have become allies against a new villain associated with Angelica Nero (possibly a prototype for BD Calhoun who would show up in season 10) 4: Jenna and Jack (the Ewing cousin) would have married and had a child 5: Ray and Donna’s adopted son; Tony would have had a teenage romance with Charlie Wade and had a teenage pregnancy. 6: Ben Stivers was going to be Jock back from the dead. All in all much better than what we would have gotten. A more mellow JR with and edge still but not as bad as he used to be but not a buffoon as he was in the last five years of the show, Pam and JR vs Angelica Nero and possibly BD Calhoun, would have shown development between the two
Jock would have been irate at Miss Ellie for selling Ewing Oil for 1 and to a snobbish barracuda like Jeremy Wendel! He would have never forgiven her for that!
With great respect to Mr. Hagman, he would have to go to a VERY remote place on this Earth where the name Ewing wouldn't resonate. He was a phenomenal villain
@LBF522 jock EWING has built EWING OIL to an empire. no matter how bad things were the co. should not be sold. it should be carried onto the next EWING generation. the DALLAS theme is powerful. great memories for thirteen yrs.****

I agree 100% No one can play JR but Larry Hagman.....That is why I said I hope the producers of the new Show Realise that and do the right thing and give JR the proper send off......and Do Not do something stupid..by trying to get another actor in his place that Would be Wrong. the fans would riot.
@redletter2008 That's a very good point, never thought of that. Why wouldn't JR just buy the shares. Guess it's a show and they wanted to add the intrigue of JR being sold out, and being defeated by his enemy. Thank goodness it was all a dream
yes, after the "dream" season it just wasn't the same and slowly went downhill. I also didn't like the way it was shot- the picture was different to the seasons' previously.
The film quality was poor in the 1986-87 season, they changed the way they filmed. It also went from Lorimar to Lorimar Telepictures. Even with Bobby back, they never captured the “feel” the show had in May 1985.
@redletter2008 I think all the fighting and stuff. Ellie got tired of it, she wanted out. That's my opinion, remember she went there to tell Jr she was selling, but once she herd Jr saying he was leaving. No way in hell was she going to see now!
I wish I had a dollar for every time after Jock's death that they were going to sell Ewing Oil or J.R. was going to quit or they were going to replace him.
@@lhzook Barbara Bel Geddes had a "radical" mastectomy in 1971 so Miss Ellie's clothing might reflect that given Donna Reed's Miss Ellie dressed more formal.
Because even thought she was rich, she didn’t flaunt around like she had money plus she was more down to earth then that of Sue Ellen, Pam Or Donna even though they were much younger. I like that she wasn’t all dolled up like a Angela Channing from “Falcon Crest.”
JR went through some serious character development during the dream season. Too bad it was cut... ... it had to be, afterall, watchers usually find the good guys boring.
I hate to agree after this season even with Bobby's return the show started to go down hill...The last good story was the Imposter Jock story. (at least to me it was ). Now that Larry Hagman has passed away I hope the New Dallas show gives JR a proper send off as they did Jock. I do hope they do NOT try to replace JR with another actor...no one can take his place. RIP Larry Hagman you will be missed.
I know. She's still that Country Girl from the 30's who did some questionable things to keep The Southfork when it was just a little Bungalow. Angela Channing on the other hand was "Straight Up Gangsta" who commanded power wherever she was.
laminage I know what they were going for, but it always clashed with how she was supposed to be the 'Ewing Matriarch' that could put even JOCK in his place when she wished to. A poor wardrobe decision. It made her look like a 80+, timid old lady instead of a strong woman in her 60s. I preferred Barbara Bel Geddes in general, but Donna Reed's fashion style was better and more suited to what Miss Ellie was. Still, there's no denying that, when she put her foot down, even Jock got quiet.
At this point in the series, Ewing Oil ownership was split: JR 30%, Christopher 30% (administered by Pam), Ellie 10%, Gary 10%, Ray 10%, Jack 10%. If Ellie wants to sell out so badly, how about selling to her own son rather than the family’s enemy, Wendell. I would have found that insulting if I were JR. Ellie didn’t have control, but Wendell planned to buy her 10%, Christopher’s 30% and Ray’s 10%, effectively giving him control of the company.
Dallas was one of the greatest shows in tv history without a doubt
It was and with benefit of hindsight Bobby should have stayed dead
@@michaelstewart3532 why
@@kennethpaulsen5407yes why that he was the most popular for it other than Jr and list goes on.
DALLAS (1978) was one of my favorite night time soaps; they don't make'em like that any more.
I miss the 1960s and 1970s tv shows
Great scene of a mother’s love and hurting inside because her son has lost so much. Miss Ellie comes to her senses and realizes her mistake hearing JR and seeing her husband’s portrait. The producers knew how to set a mighty powerful scene on Dallas!
JR held on to Ewing Oil because Ewing Oil was Jock Ewing and JR loved his daddy!
"WHY DID YOU HAVE TO LEAVE ME ALONE TO SEE THIS" POWERFUL RIGHT THERE
This was one of the few times where Miss Ellie showed that she loved JR, the other time was when he was shot, but she couldn’t lose him, she may not have liked him at times but she certainly did love him
She sure did. She did a brave thing
Of course she loved him . She couldn’t have put up with all his stuff if she hadn’t of loved him.
I liked this scene becasue it was a rare instance where Ellie cared about JR's feelings.
I think Miss Ellie did care about JR‘s feelings but it was his devious way of doing things that put them at odds.
She always cared about his feelings, it was his actions that bothered her.
J.R. Ewing... one of the greatest characters in television history!
Happy 40th anniversary DALLAS
I agree 100%!!!
Yes, Happy Anniversary!
They waited for to long to start over with dallas, if they started sooner we could have enjoyed more of Larry hagman's talent. Rip
I agree also but someone in charge who would have written the show better and with better writers.
I said the same thing!!!
I loved JR and Ellie's relationship during the Dream Season. They were closer and she cared about his feelings.
Yeah Pam seemed to really want them to have a good relationship in her dreams lol.
It wasn't really a dream. It was simply a way to bring Bobby back.
It's amazing to me how Jr never won an emmy nor anyone on the Dallas cast won an
Emmy for the show
Completely awesome
I love Dallas
Me too! It's a great show!
Jr always portrayed a cold side except, when it came to Ewing oil. JR felt it was his duty to protect what his Daddy 'Jock' company which he had worked hard for. Ms Ellie always loved her children, for right or wrong .
Ellie upset her 56 year old son is leaving home. Lol. This scene was still better than most we got the seasons that followed the dream.
I liked it because it was a rare instance of Ellie caring about JR's feelings.

There simply could NOT be a better actor for the role of J.R. Ewing.
Yes this ws a great episode for so many reasons. Ellie actually put JR's feelings first for once.
You can not just replace JR Ewing. There is only one person who can play him. They are have a funeral for JR in season 2. But Larry Hagman completed 7 episodes, so it will be later in the season.

Poor dumb airkuna...
I really liked the direction Dallas was going in until they brought Bobby back
While watching it on CBS, we were like “omg”. Turns out it was the last TRUE season with the DALLAS feel.
Even though this season was a dream, it was THE LAST GOOD SEASON!
So true. Bad writing, etc is the main reason Victoria left a year later. Duffy snd Hagman just cared about $$

All left was JR Miss Ellie. Dallas was not strong in character like MASH
Mash could have survived both JR. and Bobby death
That's bs. U know.😅😅😅😅😅❤❤❤❤❤
With Bobby gone, there was no way in hell she would sell! Knowing if she did Jr would leave!!
The "Dream Season" It would've been interesting if Patrick Duffy didn't return and the whole season wasn't scrapped.
That is exactly the same I ask myself so often.
The show MIGHT have lasted 3 more years. If Duffy hadn’t returned, there would probably never have been any tv reunion movies and certainly no TNT reboot.
I agree. Bringing Bobby back and watering down JR were awful.

Another great moment with Barbara. She had no dialog in the office scene but conveyed everything thru her face and expressions.
J.R. Ewing would have been an excellent Chicago politician.
Or any kind of politician to be honest! lol See what I did there?
She just lost Bobby, there was no way she was going to lose Jr and John Ross!
Agreed, but wasn’t Gary her ultimate favorite?

I think she was always self-conscious of her mastectomy, at least that's what I put it down to, though correct me if I'm wrong.
