One new dealer-owner once told me confidentially that the V8, including the 360 could be added as a special factory order, making these like a 2/3 scale Trans Am!

From Leo: I bought a yellow one for he wife in 1979. We really liked the car, Great mileage, and lots of interior room. Fun to drive. Never had any problems with reliability. They had a large fuel tank, we drove all month on a full up. The road salt in the Chicago area was rough on it. It started to rust when it was about 3 years old, and pretty much just dissolved.

Sweet car. My 1st car was a 1978 AMC Concord 4-dr Sedan (not D/L). I wanted the AMX version, wife wanted a 4-dr. 232cid 6cyl, auto, AM Radio, HD suspension, Bumper Rub Strips and Guards finally the AMX dashboard (tach instead of blank space in the instrument panel and 3 aux gauges/clock under the center of the dash. It took the sales man about 30 minutes to find out if it could be ordered and they gave him the code. $25 for it. We both got what we wanted. Ordered it through the PX in Germany, drove it all over. Only issue was the water pump died during a trip but it made it home. AMC told the PX garage to put the HD Water Pump from a Jeep in it since they couldn’t get one quickly. Never had a mechanical problem after that. Loved that car. We then got stationed In Georgia and was not economically feasible to put an aftermarket a/c in it. Should have never traded it in.

Worked on a 79 AMX 1 time while I worked for GoodYear in the late 90s. Suspension issues.. Anyway, car looked very close to this 1. Originally the car had the 304 2bbl w 4 speed, but something happened to the valvetrain and destroyed the engine. The owner put in a 73 AMC 360 from a wrecked Ambassador, added a 4bbl and a custom dual exhaust but did nothing to the engine. Lemme tell ya, for a smog era car, it moved pretty good! I didn't get stupid with it, being a customer's car and all, but I could tell it was a fun car to own. The owner said as optioned w factory a/c and 4 speed it was 1 of 90, not sure how true that was nor what his source was. Still a neat car IMO.

I owned a 79 AMC spirit GT with a 304. After the cam, medium riser 4bbl intake and holley, headers and 2 1/4 in dual exhaust and straight through mufflers, it ran pretty good. I surprised quite a few cameros and mustangs. I set the the shocks to the stiffest settings and it handled great. I loved those old turbine wheels.

Lucore Automotive has one (actually three total) with a 304, .060 over (1), Edlebrock Performer, cam I'm not sure, headers, 4 bbl carb with a four speed. They've had on two power tours. The bodies a little shabby looking but it gets attention.
      1) Maximum recommended overbore is .125". Which gets you 325 CID or so. Another .015 gets you 327 cubes. Which would raise some eyebrows

What killed rear wheel drive compacts - like the AMC's cars is that they were not front wheel drive - which was where the technology was going for the 80s. That made them LESS fuel efficient. Also, rear wheel drive cars - because of the high gas prices of the times - tended to make these cars more expensive - and thus less fuel efficient - compared to their front drive counterparts - like GM's 4 and 6 cylinder X bodies, Ford's front drive 4 cylinder "World car" subcompact Escort and Chrysler's 4 cylinder front drive K and L bodies all of which debuted around the time the AMC Spirit was in production.

I just saw one about a week ago parked at the local Home Depot after not seeing one in many years. It wasn't restored, but it was straight and I couldn't see any rust. There are obviously a few people out there that really loved these cars as the one we see here. But, who loves the car more, a person that drives it every day and takes good care of it, or someone that has it sit in the garage and just starts it up to wash it and polish it in the driveway before taking it to a show?

I was living in Alberta, Canada and drove by an American Motors dealer in Calgary. I had to have this great looking car. Bought it and drove it for about 5 years. Awesome and very fast. One night I was driving to work and smoked a Mazda RX 7. I drove it to a muffler shop and put a set of glass packs. We didn't have any restrictions on exhaust systems in Canada at the time. Sounded great and it was fast.My car was white with a baby blue velour interior.

It actually caused a lot of problems. This was the year they were available with a 304. However there were considerable differences. The 304 vs 360. Different exhaust manifolds. Different carburation. Possibly different pressure plate and clutch. I believe the car was a 4 speed. And enough other things to cause problems on the final assembly line. Including resulting in shutting the final assmbly line down. The 360 was only used in Jeeps by then. He should have been fired except for one thing. He had a close relation or family friend corporate headquarters that was able to save his butt. I would not be surprised if there were other "special" vehicles built by all the manufacturers. The big problem would have been if the EPA had found out. He would have been a lot smarter to have the car built with a 304 and just swapped out the motor once he had completed the purchase. The reason I know this is because I worked there for 30+ years.

Nothing wrong with a Chevy 350, but I'm all for keeping a car's engine the same brand, or a sibling brand's engine (such as a Pontiac engine in a Chevy). Chevy engines in Fords make me want to scream. I'd keep this car all AMC, in fact I'd do nothing to this car. That big six should have decent torque, and it's only original once.

When they dropped the V-8 option, did they also drop the gauge cluster and console? When I ordered my '79, I got the Spirit because I drove a lot and thought the fuel use in the 4 cylinder would be enough better to justify that. I preferred the photo wood grain on the dash, and my D/L came with a complete console and a small storage bin (perfect for a coffee cup) where the gauges would reside in an AMX. All the AMX trimmed cars had a brushed aluminum appearance overlay on the dash, as well. the final straw for me were the stripes and decals - just too much.
Doing it over, I would have opted for a Spirit with the six, added the fender flares and painted them to match and have had what, to my eyes, would have been the optimum for that neat, little car.
