I bought replacement valve cover for 08 Yukon. Didnt smoke but was oily around the outside of the pcv. I took the original valve cover and drilled extra holes in the baffle and cleaned the pcv with brake cleaner. Return ed the new valve cover. Easy fix and no need to spend 70+ dollars on new valve cover.

Me too! Just drill a few extra holes at the lowest part of the baffle/ chamber. Clean the hell out of it with brake clean and compressed air to get out all of the particles

no there is NO part anymore. There is no valve to change, its just an orifice. My 03 has a grommet like the old ones, but the PCV insert is empty, just a little hole. I researched it and that was one of the things GM did to reduce oil consumption.

I just purchased a re-manufactured engine for a Silverado 1500 4.8 and the PCV valve is also part of the valve cover, on the original engine it would pull out. I am going to pay attention when I have to replace the PCV valve that I get a cover that is like the original.

+Dan Hillman no didn't try that replaced mainly due to the cover leaking anyways ha ha probably could have tried that and just replacing the gasket but oh well ended up mainly being bad fuel thankfully didn't wreck my fuel pump ha ha I put lucas fuel system cleaner in and first treatment the problem stopped.

Did you try to spray it with a bit of carb cleaner first? I don't see any problem doing this as with a running, warm engine it would evaporate quickly. I'm having similar issues. That's what I'm going to do. It can't be worn out, I'd think. Sticky or gunked up maybe, but not worn out.

Does anyone bother to check if the pcv valve is faulty. I saw another video where a guy replaced the pcv valve it just had a small hole at the bottom of the body and a tube to secure the hose it was not blocked and he replaced it anyway. I feel in this case if the pcv valve is part of the valve cover the pcv valve would be similar or serviceable.

Blane Grinsted ya more or less but this didn't 100% solve that issue for me just the leaking oil issue down side of the block in my case I assume I was getting blow by so damaged piston rings or the heads had some damage in 1 or more cylinders in my case wasn't losing to much oil yet but had black oily sut build up on my exhaust tip

That's bad valve seal(s) letting oil past your valves when they open. When you turn it off, if the engine stops on a cylinder that has a leaky seal, it will let oil into the cylinder that will sit there until you turn it on again, thus the puff of smoke.

The GM intake manifold gaskets on these trucks are trash. I had my intake manifold drip 4 ounces of oil out of it when I removed it because I kept getting lean bank 1 & 2 trouble codes. When there's a significant vacuum leak on these trucks, it just sucks oil out of that "fake" PCV featured in this video. Removing those gaskets revealed a super cheap and flimsy plastic cutout gasket with thin green gasket material that was leaking on 5 out of the 8 cylinders. Replaced with Fel-Pro gaskets and instantly fixed my issues. 2010 silverado 5.3, btw.

I think you can clean the pvc with carb cleaner,,, I know the older style 80's 90's with rubber grommet we cleaned the all the time and reinstalled ,, I am going to spray carb cleaner in the pvc on the truck,,,and see if it helps,,, happens is shilack? Builds up in the pvc causing it not to move and close off the vacuum from your motor,,,that's why it sucks the oil into the intake and makes motor smoke,,all the same stuff shilack? Clogs the little drain holes between the baffles drain holes on the bottom of the valve cover ,,, it a combination of serveral things,,, try this,,,unplug the pvc hose where it goes into the valve cover,,, stick a bolt or something in the hose and put a hose clamp on it so you don't loose vacuum in you intake,,,drive the truck 20 30 minutes or to work just to burn the oil that's already in the intake,,, cut the truck off let it sit and cool off ,,, or over night,, the next time you crank see if it smokes ,if it does not smoke you know it's your pvc,,,if it still smokes as before with no change then it's something else,,,,,,the pvc is on the motor to create a vacuum inside the motor so it does not leak oil is all it does,,,also low vacuum such as a cracked hose on the pvc will make your traction control light come on and off on the dash if anyone is having that issue

  • @coolmikelarocque

The pcv valve in this truck. It is not part of the valve cover. The pcv valve is pressed into the cover. It is removable with a bolt extractor. New one pops into place with a socket and hammer. Guess you have a new valve cover now though lol.

Mike LaRocque; I was curious about this..can find nothing about the procedure you explain. • @WestWire

Luke Westrick I mostly changed it cause I had oil leaking down the side of my block from that cover, along with minor oil consumption most likely from the leaking and I had some rough starting issues turned out to be bad gas though, if yours is smoking like from the engine bay round that area see if your leaking oil or something leaking causing the smoke.

How many kms on the truck though? I've been told instead of doing what I did with my issues and replacement of pcv valve I could have just used carb cleaner or something to clean and possibly free up the stuck valve first, again can't say for sure if it'll help cause I can't remember much on the engine codes I may have had, I replaced mine due to leaks around the cover along with poor starting and engine noise, in the end I'm pretty certain I should have replaced water pump and fuel pump, fuel pump for the rough starting sometimes only turning over but not firing up, and water pump for the loud squeal from the front after I replaced everything else like tensioners idle pulley, alternator, power steering pump x3 , should have figured something was putting pressure on the system blowing pump after pump, but swapped the steering pump last time under warranty, then traded the truck in unfortunately....wish I still had it, but I'm certain it had many other demons to deal with despite being a beautiful truck in amazing shape.

All this does is fixes the oil consumption issue. It has nothing to do with the pcv valve itself. The pcv valve is working on both circumstances. It’s just that with the old design the oil gets sucked into the intake and burned in the combustion chamber. The new design has a baffle so that the oil cannot get sucked into the combustion chamber. At least very very little oil gets into the combustion chamber. You could essentially do the same thing with an oil catch can set up. The only downside to that would be that you would have to periodically dump the caught oil back into the motor. But it would stop the oil from being consumed inside the combustion chamber.

Ya I have a catch can on my 2013 silverado now it catches vapors mostly effective in winter , with cold starts and condensation not ever much oil in mine and even if there was dumping it back in the engine would be stupid , as its generally mixed in with the condensation so it would be oil and water so ya.

@@WestWire yeah they work wonders. And yeah why would anyone dump obvious oil mixed with water back into their engine. If it was just oil yeah lol

@@WestWire I did this today on my 2013 tahoe ltz. I changed the valve cover on the driver side. The pcv valve in the old cover was clogged up and causing me quite a bit of oil consumption. So I got a new one and changed it out. I’m changing the oil and so I’ll see if it fixes the oil consumption issue.

@@WestWire I had an oil catch can on my 04 gto. It helped a lot because the valve cover is a lot like this one. They could’ve made the pcv changeable if they really wanted to. Just another way for gm to make money off of people…

thomas martin not really on this year it's all part of the cover unlike older styles where you could just remove it from the cover then you could clean it more so, I mean ya you could try but since it doesn't come out it wouldn't get cleaned well enough but I changed the whole assembly partially cause the seal was gone and it was leaking out the side of the cover ha ha.

thomas martin yes but that motor had other demons water pump was going and couple bad piston rings cause rear 2 spark plugs often were soaked in oil either that or some defects in the ports but it's more likely it was bad rings on the pistons not to mention fuel pump was starting to go ha ha loved that beautiful truck but every time I fixed 1 thing and 1 or 2 more issues came up.
