My fellow Hylians: It's been over three years since we first premiered this video. We have (I hope!) come a long way since as a student ensemble. While you're here enjoying this Brass of the Wild arrangement, I'd like to point everyone to our most recent and FULL LENGTH 14 minute arrangement of Breath of the Wild, originally intended to be the missing sixth movement for Symphony of the Goddesses. Coming from a member of the group:
Our directors are ambitious. With arrangements, with instrumentation, everything. That has its downsides, and this is one of them. Being one of the smaller pieces in a (very) large concert set, this piece got put on the backburner more often in rehearsal, which I'll let be the explanation for general sloppiness. The conductor is a guest; he arranged the piece, and arranges a lot of our music, so we flew him out to direct it as a thank you. But we only got like two rehearsals with him conducting, hence the tempo issues. The ambitious instrumentation and lack of committed brass players at the school led to us hiring some professional musicians to fill empty spots (most of the trumpet section, the entire horn section, most of the tubas), including some more exotic brass (contrabass trombone, the blasting you heard), all of which we only rehearsed with once.
None of this is to excuse a poor performance; just to explain where things went awry. As a member of the group, I'd like to say we're making changes, albeit slow ones. I'm not satisfied with how well we do, and I personally am pushing for quality over quantity. We're still ambitious, and it still gets the better of us. We're a relatively new ensemble of around four years that has grown to over 100 committed members in that time, and for a group of 95% non-music majors at a top tier university that scrape together a few hours a week to put together ridiculously ambitious music that we arrange ourselves, we do okay, and we sure as heck have a lot of fun doing it.

I read all of the comments about the brass section being ridiculously loud before I got to that part, so when 1:09 came around, I literally couldn't stop laughing
I know that “there’s no such thing as too much brass,” but... this has a bit too much brass. It gave a very strong and brute feeling rather than a majestic feel~

It could just be the recording but the low brass is just over powering the rest of the ensemble at times and some of those releases were less than clean.
Y'all need to subdivide, and move together. Individuals playing out of tune or just not entering and cutting off together are also bringing the team down. Still really awesome that you took on this challenge!

Not gonna lash out on the orchestra. I've played the violin for 16 years, Until you reach a certain level, pretty much all concerts sound kind of like this.
My main qualm would be with arrangement, which seems far from optimal...

Considering the perfectionist nature of most violinists I've met, I commend you on not nit-picking the missed keys on the piano, the tuning issues, or the worst case of rushing - especially in the 1st violins - at 1:45, but I'm going to do it anyway. Not to crap on their day, but to point out where mistakes were made and where further practice is/was needed.
More importantly, most seem to blame the unbalanced brass section for the faults in this performance, but on principle, I blame the violas. It might sound like the brass is the problem, but the true orch-dorks know, it's always the violas. *Always*
not sure who you played with but, as a pianist and vocalist, i've performed with many high school and university orchestras that worked their asses off and were near professional level in quality. this was solely due to lack of rehearsal. Even mediocre amateur orchestras can perform really well with some time put in and having the errors addressed. here, it seems as if they they only rehearsed on their own and then got together for dress rehearsal once and then performed it. they were out of tune, out of tempo, and were either never given feedback or were but they didn't have time to incorporate it. i hope to god the audience didn't have to pay for this.
I really appreciate the fact that these performers are here for fun and the thrill of playing VG music.

I absolutely love the instrument variety, complete with uncommon orchestral instruments, like the sax, or to the rare instruments all together, such as the Subcontrabass Sax, or the contrabass flute. Unfortunately, the musicality of it all is poor. Some people can't keep time or stay in tempo, or play wrong notes. The low section is way too strong.
I think what you need to do is rehearse more, or have the musicians practice on their time. Trumpets ESPECIALLY. Preparation is key.

I'm also seeing both a baritone, judging by smaller, upward-facing bell (on the left next to the contrabass flute) and a euphonium (on the right near the trombones and tubas), which are both rare for an orchestra. I always think it's nice when you incorporate more instruments to your piece. I agree that the musicality seems lacking though; they seem like great players, it just sounds like they're sight reading for the performance.

I couldn't listen to the first minute of it. That brass section needs some shock collars, and the orch as a whole needs to practice, practice, practice. The arrangement was.. . a little off as well.
It's because of the microhphone placement, not the brass section, you walnut.

Yeah, me, too. I don't think this is Breath of the Wild. I have played the game for more than 300 hours, I don't quite recognize what they are playing.
It's the music for the last trailer, it's not in the game, and unfortunately Nintendo hasn't released it without sound effects.

You know those phone notification vibrations? the brass sounds as if a phone buzzed up on my eardrums. There were moments were everyone's tempo didnt mesh well, but it was a decent performance

Outstanding, bravissimo. I was wondering if you've ever done anything from the Kingdom Hearts series?
For not having many rehearsals beforehand, this was a very solid orchestration. But aside from the obvious problems with the tempo, there are other problems that I have with this arrangement. Nothing that ruins it, but problems nevertheless. Firstly, the notes that should have felt impactful fell flat, making the bits of silence feel a little too long and unnecessary. The choir was also way way too quiet. I absolutely cannot distinguish them from the brass instruments from time to time despite the brass instruments themselves not being that loud, compared to other orchestrations I have heard. Again, very great stuff considering the amount of practice beforehand. Since this video was uploaded 3 years ago, maybe I can go ahead and watch some of the more recent stuff to see any potential improvements.
The symphony was great but the trumpet was a bit distracting maybe the pitch could have been low
