私の経験では、石の底に漆を塗る必要はありませんでした。砥石内に水分が溜まってしまいます。 もちろん底部に亀裂があれば亀裂部分のみ漆を塗ります。ご参考までに。

つまらない事ですが・・・
塗布する前に、塗る面をダイヤモンド砥石等で「真っ平」にした方が美しく仕上がって良いのではないのでしょうか？
それとも「自然」なままの方が良いとか？
どうなんでしょうか？
1. 裏面の「皮」などを削り取ってしまうと、産地や層の手がかりがなくなってしまう。 2. 割れてしまうと悲しい。 3. 皮付きで側面に鋸跡がある状態の見た目が嫌いじゃない。
ので、私は研面以外は触りません。
もちろん、綺麗な直方体に加工されたい方はそのようになされば良く、砥石の所有者が満足のいくように好きにすれば良いことかと考えております。

半径の大きい回転のこぎりの跡、手引ののこぎりの跡があれば昔のものだとわかりますし、おそらくまともなところで採掘されたものだろうという推測もできます。
オークションなどを見ても半径10cmくらいの跡がある砥石は警戒すべきです。閉山された山から盗掘された品質が低い石を業者が切って売ってるものだったりするからです。

一応ですが合砥は日本では長崎の対馬砥石(黒名倉)、栃木の飛駒砥石、岩国の杭名砥石、等ありますよ
