My grandmother was a Christian and when I first played halo 3's campaign at launch in 2007, she sat with me and watched and she was the first one who pointed out the religious symbolism to me. Her first throwaway comment was "He said they're called the covenant, which means they're being held to an oath with God" and she kind of just shook her head like "Mhm, I see what they're doing" She made my grandpa come and watch with her and they talked together about it, but my grandpa was only focused on how cool he thought the marines and vehicles looked. He thought I was playing some sort of game based on Aliens because he thought the pelican looked like the drop ship from the movies. I miss them.
It was. Your Grandpa was right, Bungie were inspired by Alien with regards to making Halo, and it affected all of their designs. They also kept some things from their previous game, Marathon, including the Marathon Class Cruiser as a reference, and AI.
As a Christian this is really cool to me. The promotional slogan for Halo 3 was "Believe". And in the bible the passages John 1:1-7 says as follows 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might (*Believe*) Seeing as Bungies favorite number is 7 and Gods number is 7 and Halo 3s promotional word was "Believe" and as you can see the final word from John 1:1-7 is BELIEVE... This cannot be coincidence...
His number does not come from the book of John but the book of Revelation 1:17 NIV Reads "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last."
@@jakespacepiratee3740 i am a believer, but i'm most definately not seeing gospel preaching or a Bible study in halo. They might have used Bible references and undertones, but theres really nothing that yells "Christianity" in a first person shooter video game with aliens, blood and splattering etc
@DANIELH013 Well fun fact Chiefs Number really comes from Revelations 1:17 and in the context of the first game and the fall of reach it makes sense. Revelation 1:17 NIV Reads "When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last."
I knew I'd already seen a video on it from someone! there might not be many Halo content creators, but they sure work hard and have a lot of passion for their work! I'd love to see Mr Xperia's take on it as well!
The religious aspects of Halo were some of the most interesting parts of Halo for me, along with how forerunners pseudo worship of the precursors in the forerunner trilogy.
@jakespacepiratee3740 ehhh, I like the books, but the games were a major letdown in comparison. Halo 4 would have been good but doomed to failure with all the changes they made and separating from the og trilogy and creator's. I still don't understand why they thought it was going to be good, but when you have people who don't like Halo making the games, you get shit.
This also works very well with greek mythology too. The precursors are the titans, murdered by the forerunners, "gods", who then had children with men called demigods that also took on titans and gods. Chief and the spartans, (Spartans being greek) being demigods makes sense, and puts forunners, who especially after 4, (and by a pseudo extent the covenant) are his enemies. And of course, the forerunners left behind the prometheans, which also ties into greek mythos quite obviously. Cortana could also be compared to a muse, and johns voyages to destroy the covenant could at least loosely compare to the odyssey and odysius, maybe or Hercules. Also, in greek myth, zues is the god of thunder and odysius' father. Chief wears mjiolir armor, which references thors hammer, who is also the god of thunder. Somewhat indirect, but indicative of chiefs significance since odysius defeats some of the gods. Lots of connections if you look hard enough.
Given that John is thought to be the author of revaltions i think his name could be a reference to revelations 1:17 which is "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last"
18:00 it’s interesting that the biblical Flood was made to “destroy all flesh” while the Halo flood is basically 100% flesh (minus the guiding intellect of the Gravemind) Also fun fact: The word “laconic” is derived from “Laconia”, the region of Ancient Greece whose capital was Sparta. The ancient Spartans were known for saying few words, in contrast to the Athenians who had a reputation for bending the truth with their excessive rhetoric (hence their invention of sophism). This explains Bungie’s decision to make Chief and the Spartan 2s so terse and aloof with non-Spartans
ICYMI: The Gravemind has a serpentine head, tempts with knowledge, is deceptive, the Flood Hive is like a garden, described as “Satanic,” originates from a fallen and corrupted Precursor.

6:53 in my Greek Orthodox Sunday school, we were taught about types of Christ, someone who shows a characteristic of Jesus, such as job in the Old Testament, who suffered a lot similarly to Jesus, so this wouldn’t really be blasphemous if seen as chief being a type of Christ, someone who is saving humanity
I grew up Catholic, and Halo was my favorite franchise and seeing all the religious symbolism in the game just made it better. It gave everything in the game a whole different context to look through. I also love Wendigoon, so this collab video is perfect for this topic. Also you totally should do a video about ODST and it's connections to Dante's Inferno. I can't believe I somehow hadn't picked up on that obvious connection despite having read it and ODST being one of my favorites in the series.
Orthodoxy didn't separate from Roman catholicism, Both are Catholic churches that split from each other from the original pentarchy with church heads derived from the original pentarchy.

10:44 This is incredibly misinformative. The Great Schism of 1054 was caused by a large part of the Western Church (which became Roman Catholicism) wanting to change the Nicene creed to include the Filioque, a change in the doctrine of the Trinity saying that the Spirit precedes both from the Father AND the Son. The Eastern Church (which became Orthodoxy) disagreed with changing the already established beliefs of the Church and chose to split off from Rome. After that the Catholic church started adding heresies on top of heresies, such as papal infallibility, purgatory, indulgences and what have you, while the Eastern Orthodox Church remained steadfast in remaining unchanged since the Early Church. Of course there were several other reasons for why the West and East split, but the Filioque was the final straw that broke the camel's back.
such a weird feeling where youtubers with their own niche that i also happen to watch when i come across them collaborate together is like im being watched lmaoo love this video though
A welcoming crossover episode indeed and I'd love to see a videos about the DI/ODST parallels! I'd heard about them, but never actually looked into it myself. Additionally, I never thought about it, but Halo likely had a large impact on my journey out of christianity.
I mean I wouldn't say the Orthodox broke off from the Catholics. More like there was always a separation between the eastern and western parts of the church mirroring the split between western and eastern parts of the Roman empire. So it's more accurate to say they quite literally split from each other
Gonna have to chime in as an Orthodox Christian real quick. Apologies for the somewhat lengthy Lore dump, but Wendigoon (as much as I love him) really kind of botched the Great Schism explanation. Essentially, before the schism, most of Christianity was united as one church. A variety of issues over time lead to a growing division between the East and West. That division was multifaceted, and included political issues (the fall of western Rome vs the continuation of Eastern Rome under the Byzantine Empire), linguistic division (Greek persisting in the East vs the increasing prominence of Latin in the West), Military conflict (various wars, including terrible betrayals from the west against the east during the crusades), theological issues (most prominently a controversy over the "filoque," an alteration made to the Nicene Creed by Rome and rejected by the East), liturgical (conflicts over how the eucharist, or communion as its often called, was performed, along with various issues like the calanadar and whether or not priests could be married), and ecclesiastical (the biggest issue being the role of the Bishop of Rome. Rome claimed that it had authority over the entire church, while the East insisted that while Rome had a place of importance and precedence, it was not in authority over other bishops.) All of this came to a head when the Pope excommunicated the bishop of Constantinople. The bishop of Constantinople returned the favor, and due to the issues mentioned above (and more besides), the actions were never reversed, despite a few attempts being made over the following centuries. With the fall of Byzantium to the Muslim Ottoman Empire, Orthodoxy became even more geographically removed from the West than it already was, and communication largely ceased. It wouldn't be until the modern period that the question of the division and potential reunion of East and West would even be raised, let alone studied and examined. If you ask a Catholic, they will say that the Orthodox rejected the ancient authority of the Bishop of Rome and left the historic faith. If you ask an Orthodox, we would say that we rejected the innovations of Papal Supremecy, and it was the Catholics who left the historic faith. If a third party (such as a protestant like Wendigoon) is to summarize it, it would be better to say the historic church split, rather than claiming that one left the other. Aside from that, great video! Please forgive the small essay. Much love to the Catholics, Protestants, (and even any heathens!) who read to the end.
As a Christian, halo has become my favorite video game franchise because of its religious settings. It’s a shame, the newer games don’t hold up in comparison
LUC I was doing some wondering about the flood Back when Bungie planned on Forerunners being ancient humans, what would their first encounter with the flood have looked like? And when exactly? This was obviously before the precursors were a concept and before the expanded lore of the Forerunners as we know under 343 But I was thinking, Ancient humanity (forerunners) developed enough to have galaxy spanning mega structures, so in their exploration of the stars did they just happen to stumble upon the floods home world? Anyways I thought it was an interesting question
The point of the flood's origin was to be mysterious, never explained. Your imagination and creativity would be better than any concrete origin that bungie could've come up with. 343's need to explain everything ruined a lot of halo, imo.
In my head canon, the flood never had a home world within the physical. Consider how the precursors died, their spirits have went into the spiritual, which these precursors have more than likely cursed the universe all because of the Forerunners, damning every being to a flood invasion. We do know that the Halo arrays are within our galaxy, The Milky Way, but what if the Forerunners reached further? What of those tribes of Forerunners? Would humanity ever reach to colonise every habitable planet in Milky Way, just to expand further? What wouldd haappen if they DO find evidence of Forerunners living OUTSIDE of the Milky Way? These questions arise because of the importance of the weapons. Has the flood reached outside of the Milky Way? Or were there patches around the universe where the flood started popping up and other Human-like creatures are facing similar struggles? Those are the questions that pop in my head the more I know of the Halo universe, as well as being the oly questions in my head once I'm deep in the lore.
I really appreciate your perspective on the ancient world. Its very easy for us to dismiss ancient worldviews, but therr is immense value in putting in the effort to understand them. You've earned a new subscriber!
I'm a Christian who has LOVED Halo my whole life, and I agree with Master Chief's name/designation being based on John 1:17 and Jesus Himself. Chief is called the Reclaimer (Jesus was the Redeemer), he freed captives (Jesus frees captive; Luke 4:18/Isaiah 61), he destroyed the flood (Jesus freed us from sin; 1 Corinthians 15:56-57), said "It's Finished" at the end of H3 (Jesus's last words before death on the cross and eventual resurrection) etc. The story of Halo is amazing and we love it, but the story of Jesus - a true story, that God has been weaving together throughout history in the lives of all people - is WHY we love these types of stories. God has set a hope in our hearts for a great story, and whether you know it or not, you are living in it! And the only hope we have to be on the victorious side over all of the sin and pain we experience and contribute to is surrendering to King Jesus and trusting Him for our salvation.
This video is gonna be awesome, I started my Christian journey around the same time I started playing halo it honestly help me build my faith, with the different allegories and music (“The Maw” is so angelic) it really always helped me have hope.
Just to clarify, the reason the orthodox split was for good reason, what was the Catholic Church kept changing things and what are now the orthodox disagreed, orthodox Christian are non denominational as they are the closest to the original church, they aren’t another religion, but the closest one can get to the original church.
I am surprised that it has taken this long for me to see a major creator make a video on this topic. Growing up I always saw these parallels as very interesting and it adds a lot to the depth of the lore.
Awesome work. For anyone who doesn't know, Marty O'Donnell was the Music Director for the whole series and also helped collaborate on the story. Also he recently confirmed that the stories of everything Bungie are loosely tied together: Not only Halo but also Marathon, Myth and even Destiny. Oh and Pathways into Darkness, their very first game, though that was before Marty joined Bungie IIRC.
If you liked this video then I think you might also be interested in the Meaning In-between interview with Marty O'Donnell about Halo and The Catholic Church.

The promotional slogan for Halo 3 was "Believe".
And in the bible the passages John 1:1-7 says as follows
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

Seeing as Bungies favorite number is 7 and Gods number is 7 and Halo 3s promotional word was "Believe" and as you can see the final word from John 1:1-7 is BELIEVE... This cannot be coincidence...

This might be halos most important and looked over subject
Ah, yes, 2 of my favorite creators of youtube of 2 of my latests hyperfixations NICE.
Orthodoxy Mentioned 👍☦
The colab we didn't deserve, but the one we needed
1st comment, can I get a pin lol? Also I love the idea for this video, because, as a Christian, I do note a lot of religious relation to Halo.
just hit play and this is already my favorite video ive seen on your channel in a while
I'm a Christian who has LOVED Halo my whole life, and I agree with Master Chief's name/designation being based on John 1:17 and Jesus Himself.
One of the greatest RUclips videos ever made. Love the both of you
11:15 The Catholic Church separated from the Orthodox Church, not the other way around.
Great video though!
This the best video that you have made so far
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Never stop Gooning.”
-wendiGoon, Gooning Master
my jaw dropped when i saw this collab
This video is gonna be awesome, I started my Christian journey around the same time I started playing halo it honestly help me build my faith, with the different allegories and music (“The Maw” is so angelic) it really always helped me have hope.
Wendigoon talking over halo ambient music is insanely cool
11:19 what the actual F is he saying here? Asjdhakhssktomuchathubehonestwithayouu ? The lisp is CRAZY 😂
Two of my favorite creators on the internet!!!
Just to clarify, the reason the orthodox split was for good reason, what was the Catholic Church kept changing things and what are now the orthodox disagreed, orthodox Christian are non denominational as they are the closest to the original church, they aren’t another religion, but the closest one can get to the original church.
Nah not really, that’s what orthodox members say but most of their apologetics are based on lies sadly
This is the crossover i never knew i needed. Activate MEGA LIKE
Man this is awesome. Ive recently gotten into the lore so deep.
The collab I have been waiting on! I saw you had a blast at Range Day!
Ending the year with a BANG!! What a cross over. Love both you guys
I am surprised that it has taken this long for me to see a major creator make a video on this topic. Growing up I always saw these parallels as very interesting and it adds a lot to the depth of the lore.
If the Legacy council of the old Bungie devs convenes, this video would be a good starting point to get their take on real life references.
Love this you guys are great content creators, love you guys doing a collaboration its awesome.
Was not expecting this collab! Awesome
This video is saved in my GREATEST VIDEO EVER playlist. A Monument to All Your Sins. Mythic!!!
If you liked this video then I think you might also be interested in the Meaning In-between interview with Marty O'Donnell about Halo and The Catholic Church.
"The best source on the internet" lmao
This is sick love the collab
Merry Christmas 🎄 You at range day still blows my mind. Awesome video, been a fan of both of y’all for a while
Hell yeah, two of my favorite youtubers doing a collab!
These two doing a Collab wasn’t expected but very welcome
The Master Chief being called a “demon” by the Covenant could be similar to the way the Pharisees called Jesus as Heretic. I mean I know we’re grasping for straws here, but it’s all in good fun
Dude there’s some FIRE videos coming out rn!
Nice! Collab of some of my two favorite youtubers!!!
A suprise to be sure but a VERY welcome one. Never would've seen a HiddenXperia/wendigoon crossover on the cards!
Wendigoon is collabing with all my favorite youtubers, and I love it
Bro, 1 minute in I said “you got me God” getting me to pay attention to scripture by adding it into a halo video. Well played sir, well played.
Merry Christmas! May God bless both you and Wendigoon!
Woooo! Papa goon talking Halo!
