Can you describe the effect of getting a mid sole on them? My experience with crepe soles is that they're extremely comfy but if you step on a coin you can tell if it's heads or tails, and I'm wondering if the mid sole dampens that without killing the softness and superb grip?
My great grandpa and great uncle worked as shoemakers after moving to Butte, MT from Austria during WWII. This kind of work holds a special place in my heart ❤
i wasnt expecting that tour of tring but that was a treat. absolutely beautiful town. looks like a modern day fairy tale village. btw i couldn't put my finger on it but i kept feeling a certain kind of way while watching your videos and i just realized now what it is - nostalgia. i grew up and live in south-east asia (the philippines specifically) and when i was much younger (im in my mid 30s now), we used to have cobblers ply their trade by shouting "shoes! umbrellas!" in our streets. they would have their tools and kit with them and would repair shoes, umbrellas, belts, bags, and really any leather goods right then and there, and us kids playing outside in the streets, we would all watch in fascination as they did their stuff. it's a very fond childhood memory and i feel a little bit sad that these street cobblers are practically gone now. their singsong voices were a fixture in many happy sunny afternoons. i'm relieved though that this trade is well and alive in other parts of the world, so thank you for sharing that with us. also those soles on the red wings look so comfortable - and hey, great singing! cheers! (and sorry for the long comment).
What a great way to pass 30 mins, just watch Dan the main man hard at it, as always. Not only effort, care and dedication to his work, but also in the video's too. Such a genuine decent guy. Nice to see the Duck :P loved the double stitch towards the end too. No time for a cuppa in this one Dan?? :)
A word that is much abused right now is "artisan". However, this bloke is a genuine artisan craftsman. What a joy to watch someone so skilled at doing something they like doing.
You make it all look so easy, not sure about the wedge sole on the Red wings, but who am I to disagree with the customer, eh! Thanks for the quick walk about, its appreciated “oh, but to be in England”. Take care and keep the videos coming.
Very cool to see those Arrow Mocs. I worked for them in high school and one of my tasks was sewing those uppers and vamps together. It makes me happy to see them getting some new life breathed into them. My own pair is over 20 years old and I'm not sure what I'll do with them once the current soles (leather) wear through.
Both of these jobs clearly show your level of artisanship and expertise. You radically changed the look on the first pair and it's lovely how you gave the traditional mocs a new life. Thank you!
I have never thought about shoemaking like this. I've known, of course, that it's exsistered, but......... Thanks so much for an interesting site, i love it
Iron Rangers are what got me into watching videos about shoe/boot construction initially. I’m a purist an$ prefer them with the leather sole but I hope the owner of these loves the conversion.
I was dubious about that bright sole on those haggard boot uppers. But they looked amazing when you finished with them. Your videos just get better. Thanks mate 👍

I am a plasterer as well as a carpenter, so I wear boots for a living. Never thought I'd be so interested in the work that is done to repair them. Mentioned this on another video , actually. I have bought 1 brand for about 10 years, and I am barely through my 2nd pair. Redwings are nice, I hear. Wouldn't work for me, as I run around far too much and it would not make much sense to use them. Awesome content, btw.
Thanks for the tour, Dan. What a beautiful and charming old town it is. Outstanding work as I always. Never a dull moment in your shop! “ 🎶Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea. Joy to you and me!🎵”

Are these 8084s? How do yours look after a year? I bought the same ones today for 30% off and I'm not sure I want to keep them. Scratch that, those aren't nickel eyelets are they. Is that black harness leather?
Thanks Dan for another great video, enjoyed the tour. I have a pair of Red Wing chukkas and seeing the Vibram that have done here I think that's the way I'll go when they need doing.

The boots turned out awesome and the moccasins too i thought you were gonna have to pick out every single stitch with some longnose but they just unraveled with steady pressure and i always half look away when you use the stitcher your fingers are so close 😄
That sewing machine just looks like a monster to operate. It just reminds me of my mother who worked for a Levi Factory many years ago sewing the back pockets onto jeans. It was pretty fast-paced and the sewing machines were all operated with a pulley system so they never really shut off between pockets. A moment of losing her attention and she managed to sew right through her finger before she managed to shut off her machine. Bottom line, never lose your attention around that thing. I enjoy your videos...
Everything looks great. If I owned those moccasins though, I would have asked you to just stitch the midsole on and glue the crepe. That would be a solid reinforcement for the shoes, and then they would never need to have holes punched through the foot bed again from stitching new soles. Just glue on replacement crepe as needed. I think the glue is plenty to hold those on. 🤷♂️
What an amazing job. You’re so much sweeter than the old German man I went to when I was a little girl in the ‘70’s. He was scary and mean. Did good work but scary. 😂
