  • Born in Seguin, Texas in 1953, Nanci Griffith began performing and releasing folk music while working as a nursery teacher in Austin in the 1970s.
She moved to Nashville in 1985, where she landed her first major record deal.
Griffith found country success with her recording of Nancy Gold's From a Distance, years before Bette Midler's version became a major hit.
Her style of music, which Griffith herself described as "folkabilly", was considered unique and blended musical genres.
She won a Grammy award in 1994 for her album Other Voices, Other Rooms which was made up of cover songs and musical collaborations.
She previously survived two bouts of cancer in the 1990s and continued to tour and produce music - with her final album released in 2012.
"It was Nanci's wish that no further formal statement or press release happen for a week following her passing," Gold Mountain Entertainment said in a statement.
"These Days In An Open Book" is a song written by Nanci Griffith and included in her album "Flyer" (1994).

Shut it down and call this road a day
And put this silence in my heart in a better place
I have traveled with your ghost now so many years
That I see you in the shadows
    In hotel rooms and headlights
    You're coming up beside me
    Whether it's day or night
These days my life is an open book
Missing pages I cannot seem to find
    These days your face
    In my memory
Is in a folded hand of grace against these times
No one's ever come between your memory and me
I have driven this weary vessel here alone
Will you still find me if I leave you here beside this road
Cause I need someone who can touch me
Who'll put no one above me
    Someone who needs me
    Like the air he breathes
These days my life is an open book
Missing pages I cannot seem to find
    These days your face
    In my memory
Is in a folded hand of grace against these times
I can't remember where this toll road goes
Maybe it's Fort Worth, maybe it's a heart of gold
The price of love is such a heavy toll
That I've lived my life in the back roads
With your love in my pocket
If I spend the love you gave me
Tell me where will it go?
    These days your face
    In my memory
Is in a folded hand of grace
    Folded hand of grace
    Folded hand of grace
    Against these times

I discovered Nanci (and subsequently fell in love with her) about 15 yrs ago and always wanted to see her in concert. Never did, sadly. She's like the girl next door you always wanted to marry. I found out just today she passed on...and my poor heart broke some more. God Speed Nanci.

Her best version of this was live with The Boston Pops, one of the best performances of any song I’ve ever heard but it’s no longer on RUclips. Hopefully someone has it and will post it again. A lot of memories that took me back home.
