While Joel (Jim Carrey from The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Bruce Almighty) is driving, Clementine (Kate Winslet from Titanic, Finding Neverland and The Reader) opens a letter she received, with a tape. When puts the tape in the car radio and discovers that it is her talking about Joel and all the things she hates about him. She is shocked and Joel, upset, pulls over and asks her to get out of his car. He drives home and has also received his tape. Clementine goes to see him and hears the same type of bad remarks he states about her. Still, they are not mad at eachother and he offers Clementine a drink.

What’s the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie about?
After a fight, Joel (Jim Carrey from The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Bruce Almighty) discovers that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet from Titanic, Finding Neverland and The Reader) has had her memories of him erased by the firm Lacuna. He bitterly decides to undergo the same procedure. In preparation, he records a tape for Lacuna, recounting his memories of their volatile relationship. The Lacuna employees work on Joel's brain as he sleeps in his apartment so that he will wake up with no knowledge of the procedure. Joel re-experiences his memories of Clementine as they are erased and as he reaches earlier, he realizes that he does not want to forget her. His mental projection of Clementine suggests Joel hide her in memories that do not involve her. This halts the procedure, but Stan calls the Lacuna boss, Howard, who arrives and restarts it. Joel arrives at his last remaining memory of Clementine: the day they first met. As the memory crumbles around them, Clementine tells Joel to meet her in Montauk. Joel wakes up, his memories of Clementine erased. He goes to Montauk on impulse and meets Clementine again on the train home. They are drawn to each other and go on a date to the frozen Charles River in Boston. Joel and Clementine receive their Lacuna records and listen to their tapes. They are shocked by the bitter memories they had of each other, but agree to try again.
