- There’s nothing wrong with being a little pretentious from time to time, especially when there’s food involved! But the real question is, are these food products worth ‘showing off’ with, or are they just style over substance?
In this episode, we taste and review a selection of ingredients to see if they’re worthy of your kitchen (and your cash!)
You can find out more about the ingredients we've reviewed in the links below. This series should be called "How many of these things Barry has at home"
Yep
I cringe when it becomes “how many of these things to I have at home”. Or at least a similar thing.
@@eerob1013 - add "unopened and about to expire" and that's me too...
On a scale of 1 to Barry how pretentious is it 😂
After watching, I only have 3 of the 5. So I’m feeling pretty good.
"we're not good for each other". I want a pretentious episode that is basically just Ben and Jamie judging the contents of Barry's pantry and fridge.
I would watch a whole series of this. 🤣
It would need James too, to be the snobby judgmental one!
That's a great idea.
Please, pretty please do this!
I need this episode in my life
"Pretentious or not?" is basically "would Barry buy this?"
We should start putting him in charge of product sourcing for these videos 😂
@@SortedFood just look in his kitchen. I'm sure he has enough pretentious things to last 10 videos and by the time you're done with those, he has bought even more pretentious things and the circle just goes on and on 😜
@@SortedFood if he was nearly everything would be so yeah good call
more like, Does he have it already or not
@@SortedFood bugger that. Save yourself some dosh and raid his cupboards and fridge ;P
“We (James) has prepared brioche” when one person does all the work on a group project
100% - it went down a treat too!
We has
@@SortedFood I think I'd prefer James on his own rather than normals trying to help.
Yeah but like it's have...
There are different levels of pretentious:
-pretentious but I like it
-branding is pretentious
- good quality but waaaaaaay too expensive
-I can’t tell the difference between the original and the new version
-has no effect
-just a stupid idea
And..... just plain 'Pretentious'
There are three levels of pretentiousness. "Yes" "No" and "Barry".
And Barry Taylor pretentious
You forgot one: Owned by Barry.
You do understand that the word pretentious already has an official definition, right???
“It’s called a dinner party, Jamie” is possibly the most Englishy posh thing ever uttered on this channel and I love it 😂😂😂
That’s the most english comment I’ve ever read lol 😂
@@EmiryCoco18 And that's the most English reply I've ever read 😂😂😂
Pass it on hero ingredient Rhubarb
If pass it on has taught me one thing it's that these five cannot handle rhubarb with a time limit. Now it must be the centre piece of the dish.
How very Janice of you. Truly evil. I like!
@@Uncle_Smidge channeling my inner Janice 😂
I just imagine Mike getting into the "zone" before recording the voice over
I'm all for this. Too bad rhubarb is already out of season now... Maybe next year?
Ben's complete confidence in spraying the balsamic spray into his mouth was astronomical
And the results even more so. He makes some amazing faces! 🤣
Hilarious!
IKR, it was like seeing Luke Skywalker look down the barrel of a light saber.
Ben after spritzing balsamic vinegar into his mouth: I immediately regret this decision!
Me: How has Barry not had any of these things at home? Barry: oive got this at home
*Oive*
HAH!
Oive!! Haha I died 😂😂
It was item two... So you said it once before he had it?
Greg Wood LOL wow, Greg, no need to be rude. I was actually referring to the entire series. It’s a running gag that Barry uses expensive and pretentious things. I’ve been waiting for the day that he actually owns one of the items.
@@gregwood5083 chill out Greg
Ben: "It's called a dinner party"
Okay young man, you need to stop spending time with that Currie boy with this amount of sass!
"For Ben, four people in his house is a dinner party, but for Jamie - it's called a Tuesday"
@@dedjderaladin298 you're right! 😂
@@dedjderaladin298 Is he M. Bison?
@@hayleytaylor8611 1 Jamie, 1 Wife, 2 Kids = 4. So every night is 'four people for dinner' around the Spafford sleeping space
Lol I'm just imagining "Tsk, that Currie boy. You're hanging around that ruffian too much"
review some pretentious ingredients or gadgets that barry owns and have him defend his purchase haha
😂 this would be a funny video.
I am pretty sure Barry goes to the grocery store, looks around and finds a very aesthetically pleasing package and buys it! 😅
Also,
Ben Roast : Defends his silicon utensils
Jamie Roast : Defends his collection of 142 different types of spicy meat rub
Jamie: ...Very Normal Barry
Me: Barry is not normal
😂
He's basic, though.
He's normal for Barry though
for values of normal
James: Makes sticky toffee pudding
Ben: * Microwaves brussel sprouts* - "I like this chair..."
Jamie’s shirt reminded me of the time he placed black tape over his white shirt to make it look like a referee’s shirt 😂
LOLLLL
Gayathri Sreekumar it’s the 1st chef vs. chef ultimate battle 😊
I nearly forgot about that!
I literally only came to the comments section to see if anyone had made fun of Jamie's shirt yet. Spot on!
@@gimnof Same here... so much could be said... time to give it back to the wife.
11:12 iT's cAlLeD a DiNnEr pArTy jAmiE! some of us have forgotten what interactions outside social distancing are BEN!
The thing about Madagascan vanilla is that about 80% of all the vanilla in the world is grown in Madagascar, but companies put that on there to sound fancier, most supermarket vanilla extract comes from Madagascar too.
Ugandan Ndali vanilla is the best because they actually let the pods get ripe before picking..
a lot of companies just don't use actual vanilla at all. it is still a pricey herb.
sirBrouwer There are even companies (e.g. Watkins) that proudly proclaim their vanilla is 100% artificial!
I suspect this is an artifact of the (unfortunately legit) 80s vanilla scare, when tons of "pure natural vanilla" sold in the US and Canada turned out to be tonka bean extract. Tonka beans contain high levels of the blood thinner coumarin and, like all legumes, can cause cross-reactions in people with soy allergy.
Yeah, proudly proclaiming your vanilla is "Madagascar vanilla" is like bragging about your steakhouse only serving Black Angus beef in the US of A. Congratulations, you are using the cheapest, most widely available kind, how amazing!
I thought most cheap vanilla was made by bacteria, not extracted from vanilla pods at all.
I suspect that chocolate spread will be gone before “pass it on: pretentious ingredients #2”
Truffles.
Back when I was a student I worked as a gardener in a posh nursing home over the summer.
One day I was up in the staff room having lunch and chatting with a couple of the nurses who enjoyed cooking as I did. Truffles came up and this voice appeared from one of the older nurses who was reading a magazine. "Truffles smell like sex!"
We were all a bit agog sitting with our mouths open. She was like everyones favourite Granny and usually quite prim. Turned out her son was a chef and that's how he'd described them to her, and we all had to agree, they do have a slightly sexual aroma. A couple of decades later, everytime I use truffles or a truffle product her voice rings in my ears. Puts a different slant on coy Ben wax lyrical about them! :)
😂 what a great memory and story! Thanks for sharing.
This is a great story! Thank for sharing!
"I think you've added the word spritz, but yes!"
"Nonono, look, see? Spritz." *sprays balsamic in his mouth and immediately regrets it*
I immediately died 😂😂😂😂
ben spritzing that balsamic straight into his mouth really tells me he'll do anything to prove a point
EmpressMojoJojo do you not remember the coconut scraper?! Ben absolutely will do anything to prove a point
Anna Pettit you right 😂
He has experience with spritzing.
He's trying to blame Hayley lmao we don't believe you Barry 😂
But it's revealed she buys it in the blooper....
@@dedjderaladin298 He said in the main show Haley bought it and hoped that it was on sale at the time; the blooper was how he dialed her up and found out she paid full price for it. :)
Barry laughing at the Gianduja reminded me of Captain Holt from Brooklyn 99 after he eats a Marshmallow for the 1st time...
A reference I appreciate
Lost it at Barry saying "walk through" with the cheese and cracker. #SprayDelaySlay
This is why I love these guys! They can always make you laugh!
What does it mean?
The joy of pretentious ingredients without the shame and costs having to buy them myself
So memorable. Sorted Memes will have a field day with just the giandujia bit
100%
Ben: I'm salivating so much from just the one teaspoon.
Me: I'm salivating just by watching it.
Right that looks amazing
Love Ben in the Testing seat. I would also love to see him follow up on the "I'd like to experiment more" part.
Absolutely! Both he and James expanding on these things would be great. Ben always comes up with something that us unexpected yet really works!
Yeah every time the chefs say they want to experiment with X ingredient I want to see the results
I paused the video for the 'pesto' ingredients, declared "this is not a pesto" and started the video again. 15 second later Ben is complaining about the ingredients of the 'pesto'. SORTEDfood has raised me well.
Thank goodness, I was almost bored enough to go outside.
😂.
I'm glad the vanilla paste was deemed "not pretentious" as I have a tube in my fridge. It's jolly good.
Jamie: "A very normal Barry"
Come on Jamie, Baz is not normal. I feel personally offended. He is special! How could you call someone who loves a rose gold aesthetic normal?? 😂
LOLLLLLs
None of them are normal. 5 wonderful weirdos, 2 of them just happens to be chefs 😉

"But baby, it's for a dish I wanna tryyyy!"
He says 'we're not good for each other' but I'm pretty sure they are perfect for each other.
I don't think I have ever seen Ben happier than when Jamie said "sticky toffee pudding" xD
When things are back to normal. I would love for Barry to go to a farmers market and just see what he gets

@@rulitossimplyrulitos1088 Something like this : ruclips.net/video/vqtk-wkdMe8/видео.html
Dedj Deraladin yes!
Am I the only one that thinks Gü chocolate spread is not a 'normal' chocolate spread. Something like nutella may have been better as a comparison. Apart from that great video.
Yes! I was sure someone else must have thought this! Gü chocolate spread is already pretentious.
I think it was the same concept as with the pesto. It's normal in the sense that it has no layers and is the same spread through and through but it's a good quality one. To see if the different layers etc really make that much of a difference.
I'm so used to Ben being on the other side, explaining these ingredients, so I'm so happy to see this new video where he gets to taste them yaaayyy
Barry's laugh after tasting the chocolate spread... I can't tell if it's adorable, or terrifying..
Barry shouldn't be introduced as normal in these pretentious or not episodes but as the pretentious expert.
I was thinking the same thing. 😂
That spray sounds amazing. Y'all need to do an episode on spritzes.
It's actually really good!
Scottish peat smoked sea salt would be a interesting product for this series.
Love how they both looked straight into the camera and said that -truffle- salt isn't pretentious 😂
I'm german and I have to say congrats to Jamie. He pronounced "Dr. Oetker" really well! I'm impressed :)
"We have a store-bought chocolate spread to compare with the La Molina"
*brings out Gü chocolate spread*
Couldn't they have brought out a tub of Nutella or store brand; Gü's pretentious enough for me XD
Yeah, like comparing a $200.000 car to a $800.000 car and then complaining how the cheaper car is slow.
Nutella is not just chocolate though, it has hazelnut
@@Rebster If recall from the block of the chocolate its a hazelnut chocolate to begin with. And actually looking at the jar there are hazelnuts around the logo

so, they finally had a haircut 💇♂️ 😂😂
Or at least, someone swapped Ben's LEGO hair part for a smaller one. Shame, really; I was looking forward to them all looking like the Ramones.
9:23 You'd be doing the exact same thing, Spafford, you´d gobble down the rest of the pudding, so don't act all exasperated!
This series should be renamed to things we've found in Barry's pantry.
"our very normal Barry" should have been "our very pretentious Barry" 😂
The first video I saw from Sorted was the first Pretentious Ingredient. Been here ever since 😍
Mine was a sausage roll recipe where they lined the pastry with salami.
First thing I ever made solo
Now I've made puff pastry and minced my own sausage meat following their recipe.
Amazing what you can learn without even releasing it.
Welcome to the team!
Tom Pugh whoaa. That’s an amazing achievement for a first timer. I’d really like to make ravioli from scratch like Mike did cuz it really looked so simple and achievable but I just haven’t got the time yet. I love how this channel really inspires and encourages people to try out recipes and challenges we’d never think of considering
SORTEDfood thank you! 😍

Barry: Just from the side, I know what this is
Of course you do, hun, of course you do

Why is Ben so stinkin cute in this vid?! He so playful I love it
That bit at the end with Barry and his wife was adorable. 😆
“Aw, flipping ‘eck!” - Barry James Taylor, 2020.
Truer words were never spoken.
I see you Barry, trying to put the blame on Haley... 👀
😂
No “normal” person has that many rings on his hands, Barry.
Lol, was he just making sure he was really very truly married? Hahaha!
Barry's delight at the chocolate and vanilla products is... well, a delight :P
Watching my favorite boi’s eat pretentious foods is a lovely birthday gift to me. Thank you Sorted for all the great videos that made me drool with hunger and laugh with tears❤️ Continue being awesome and stay safe out there!!!!
There's a brand of oil here in NZ called "The Good Oil" and it really tries to sell itself as being a SUPER healthy alternative to canola. I love pointing out to gullible Kiwis that rapeseed (which The Good Oil is) and canola are the same hehehe
Why am I not surprised Barry already had the pesto at home 😂
My roommate and I both love Sorted so I try not to watch new episodes without her. Definitely failed and watched this one early. Good thing Sorted videos are just as great on a re-watch!
A little note for anyone who wants to step up their Italian pronounciation game:
A is read like the one in "cAr"
E is read like the ones in "EbbErs"
I is read like the one in "gIve"
O is read like the one in "Open"
U is read like the one in "pUt"

I feel like we don't get enough of Ebbers on the "tasting" side. (I know he's on that side sometimes, I just feel it's not enough :) )
I wanna see Ben reacting to unusual tinned foods, more Pretentious ingredients, etc.
Absolutely love this series. So much fun.
A little bit disappointed that nobody got, that the salt is just cheap, artificial truffle flavoring. The summer truffle is basically tasteless itself and quite cheap as well. So simply not a good product, but unnecessary, overpriced, pretentious salt.
Ben: The spray barely does anything but would be a talking point at a dinner party, therefore.... not pretentious?
Pretentious ingredients are my favorite video of sorted! 😇✨🤩

Beginners guide to London!
26.2 dishes that you believe a person who is visiting London for the first time should consume. There are no rules as to where the dish needs to be found. The dish can come from anywhere from a street vendor to an up scale sit down restaurant. There is no restrictions on what the dish is, from doughnuts to smoked salmon and every other delicious dish in between. Each member of the sorted food staff can choose one dish. The rest need to be selected by the sorted food staff’s friends and family.
The whole premise is a kind of insiders guide to London. The locations and dishes should be local favorites.
While it's not exactly the time for pretentiousity (thanks Jamie), it's always good to feel pretentious while not spending much at all.
PS. Have never seen Ben being so expressive.
Ben is serving some meme-worthy stills on this one
I like that in this episode, all the ingredients seem to be fairly solid products, not just branding, so it becomes more difficult to say whether they are pretentious, worth the premium or not. Whereas in some other episodes it looked like to stuff was picked up somewhere in between the novelty and snake oil aisles.
Just wanted to say thank you for your amazing videos! They really make my day :)
I miss the chef vs chef battles bring them back

I've had dinosaur kale in my garden for years, because it is actually very easy to grow organic and produces tremendous yeilds.
It's very pest and heat resistant, it usually will last 3 or 4 years.
After the first season, it gets tougher and stronger, but you can still eat it, and I leave it in the beds because it tends to attract the white fly away from other brassicas.
