I sat down with Jason Lee to talk all about his latest book, In The Gold Dust Rush. It's a collection of black and white photographs made between 2008 and 2020, published by Stanley / Barker. We talk about sequencing the photos, working with a publisher, all of the choices in making a book, and the vulnerability that comes with putting your work out into the world. I hope you all enjoy. ❤️

TALK. TO. ED. TEMPLETON. RIGHT NOW. Man is my hero, would love to see you guys ramble about skate and photos.
Man Jason is such a legend... If anyone's missed it, there is a great short film with Jason that Ilford published, all about his mindset regarding photography and the american photo road trip!
Jason Lee... what a total icon
I love these videos. I'm a huge Jason Lee fan both for his acting and now for his incredible photography.
Love this black and white work - Beautiful images.
There's something about skaters and that whole DIY work ethic that stays with them for life. Jason is very humble, gracious & totally unpretentious. I kind of chuckled when he said "if people were into it"...I thought...DUDE, you're Jason Lee...millions of people have seen you in films & your TV show, of course they're gonna be into it!
I received my copy of his newest book about a week ago, and you can definitely see the evolution of his craft & vision. There are many interesting images in the book, and some are just flat out astonishing. Well done to Jason on a fantastic book I'm stoked to own.
Jason Lee please make a zine with the Photo Fools! You are an inspiration to our work, and we will drive anywhere to meet. Thank you Matt Day for sharing this conversation, and for continuing to inspire the photography community!
Very nice. I will always listen to Jason Lee interviews.
I didnt know Jason Lee took photos. Used to be a huge fan of him in Mallrats and Chasing Amy years back
Chasing Amy is SO underrated.
there is a great short film with Jason that Ilford published, all about his mindset regarding photography and the american photo road trip, check it out!
@@mattdayphoto He'll always be Jeff Bebe to me
He also used to be a professional skateboarder as well before he started doing movies.
@@mattdayphoto shamefully so. Only second to Clerks in my book of Kevin Smith movies and the reason I will always rate Ben Affleck.
Just watching this gem. Both of you are photographers whom I admire both for your ability and your affable natures. Thanks for sharing stuff like this, Matt.
For those interested in skateboarding artists: Ed Templeton, Jerry Hsu, Jason Dill, Ray Barbee, the list goes on.

@@pabs4542 yee for sure. Used to have his shoes at one point.
@@beautifulmanclub2512 Gonzfather for sure. He's the OG. I was trying to show more photographer/skaters.
This! Yes! More of it!
Love hearing people talk about creativity in any way, and their process. Would love to see more interviews! *couch* mr and mrs Templeton *couch-couch*
It's funny. As a person coming from diy-culture (punk, rather than skate, myself), it always feel extra encouraging and inspiring hearing diy folks, or people with a diy background or mindset, talk about creativity. Might also be because I subscribe to this channel.
You both inspire me to shoot BW film everyday. Always look forward to your longform/conversation content. Have a great day, Matt.
Jason is and has been keeping Henry Wessel's philosophy alive, legends both of them, just ordered Jason's book.
..."99% of people viewing what you created, aren't gonna notice the things you are killing yourself over"...
Like Jason said, I love to see photographers talk about their process. So your videos like these are perfect, Matt!
Would love to see a Jason Lee/Matt Day photo road trip video in 2021/2022...
Good interview/discussion. I bought his book a few months ago and had no idea it was Jason Lee the actor! Very nice book!
Jason always surprises me. Back in the 2000’s I loved his work in movies and TV. I was into skateboarding a lot at the time and it blew my mind when I found out he was a skateboarder too. Fast forward to now and I had no idea he was a photographer. In 15-20 more years who knows what hobby I’ll discover that we share? 😂
Such a good video. His Texas work is awesome. Love that he made The Gold Dust Rush in Pages. Just great.
Gold Dust Rush photos awesome too.
Thank you so much for this! Much love for Jason ♥️
Great interview Matt and Jason. I really like this type of content, hearing other photographers speak of their triumphs and tragedies.
I dont know how this one flew passed my radar, Lee is such a legend. Naturally cool. Love his work. Thank you Matt for giving us such a great convo!
Appreciate you checking it out! Jason’s a good dude.
I received my copy of this and instantly one of my favorite photo books. Love Jason Lee’s photography and appreciation for life
Thanks for making this video happen and sharing it! I go back and listen to the podcast you did with Jason quite frequently. Would love to see a video conversation with you and Laura Partain - I really enjoy listening to the podcast with her as well.
I really enjoyed this interview!
Familiar with his acting and skateboarding and had no idea he was an awesome talented photographer
Dude no way, I mentioned him in a comment back in the summer I honestly wasn't expecting to see a video with him this soon
Just spotted you have a copy of Sunshine Hotel behind you Matt, great book!
Hadn’t seen this one! Amazing!
Lovely video with one of my favorite photography youtubers and photographers.
You two are truly my inspiration.🖤📷🎞
Well that was super rad. Bravo Matt.
Woah! Hell yeah! Two legends...
Great talk - this was so worth the time!
Really enjoyed this! Great interview.
Loving the book! Really happy to have a Jason Lee book in my collection.
Loved this Matt! Huge fan of Jason’s. I could listen to you guys talk about photography and book making all day🤘📸
Great interview and there’s a genuine mutual appreciation between the two of you. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing this 😊
Beautiful conversation and I'm so excited to get my hands on this book. Thank you Matt for what you do in our community!
Such a fun and informative interview between you guys, loved it! Really dug Jason's idea about meetups and zines, would be awesome to see those come together
I am pleased with this, this is what I needed, thanks :D I am awaiting my copy of the book. Jason Lee actually influenced me very much, when I listened to Analog Talk podcast - not knowing at the moment, who he is (that he is the man playing that funny guy Earl in my favourite TV series) - where he was speaking about New Topograhpics. That was completely new thing for me, although I knew work of Stephen Shore, and I liked this style of photography (which is today quite popular, based on what I see on Instagram and on RUclips) already before, that philospohy and history behind it was competely new for me, so he broadened my horizons, and in the end, it influenced, and still keep inspiring, together with his work my photography. Cannot wait for the book. Really good listening, to hear about photographic approach of you both.
Heck yea! I love that Ilford documentary
Wow. This is some next level inspiration and artistic vision. I appreciate both of your willingness to create, grow, and learn. I love the idea of meeting other photographers AND creating work with them. Awesome stuff.
Jason always seemed like a good guy. It's weird he's just a bit older than I and there are some seriously parallels I see in my path and his.. only his path is a lot more successfully in whichever endeavor and whichever life point! LOL Have enjoyed and connected to not just his work but his process since discovering he was doing this several years ago. Great to see him on here with you.
Two living legends nerding out over black and white imagery? I couldnt ask for a better video... 2021 is already over this wins.
That was fantastic.
Great conversation
You should do more of these
Wow, inspiring. I´m thinking of a project myself but I probably won´t do it for sale. More as a personal wrap up to show my view on my quarter where I roam across with my dog ... This helped a lot in the creative process. As Jason said: Thank you for your impact on the photographic community technically and creatively. Well done.
I'm a huge fan of Jason. Awesome vide, mate
"I'm just one of the out-of-focus guys!"
I've been hoping to see a conversation between these two. Love to see it! Bring on a photo road trip :)
Although Jason's book is now sold out at Stanley Barker I manged to snag one at photobookstore just now so it's worth shopping around online to find a copy.
such beautiful work!!
HELL YEAH!!
THE PHOTO GODS HAVE MET WITH THE SKATE GODS,
AND HAVE BROUGHT THIS TO US MERE MORTALS!!!!!!!!!!!
Really inspiring conversation!!!
Ah damn the book is sold out :( As if you have EARL on your channel!! What a legend he is. Loved this, thankyou.
Awesome video Matt. You should try and get Bryan Schutmaat on the channel, his work of the American West is amazing.
That's a very interesting talk guys!
In a car somewhere roaming around my fav thing
Thank you for this
Sold out already. Damn
thanks for this interview, made me want to go out and shoot on random roadtrips
With more and more channels using the podcast format, Google should really think to enable creators to easily create a podcast audio-only version of videos, similarly to what the music app already does. I feel I could listen to this in a very different way I do in the video format
So cool!
Legend!!
This is so rad!!
B to the A to the mhm. Love the book.
btw i would take a plane just to spend some days taking some photos with u 2. For real!
Great Video! Could have been two hours long.
Sup Brodie!!!!
Anyone know where I can get the non signature edition of the book?
Hi, Earl!
nice
Can‘t wait to finally get my copy of the book. But I suppose Brexit is showing its first effects.
Its arduous isn't it, you could edit forever its the hardest thing to do i think , you might never print a book if you never give in to the process
This guy think and speak kinda like me. I think he would like my album :)
