he (they) has finally realized their transness and knows that not coming out of the closet will kill them.

The scene where Owen breaks down at work is so powerful because no matter how much he screams and cries for help, no one even looks up.
Then after the scene in the bathroom, he walks out and apologizes to everyone and still, no one cares.
It was a brutal representation of someone so scared of change that they die in the closet.

But then the ending....... so undoubtedly sad and tragic, but also made me angry. Not at the main character and her self doubt and fear, but angry at the world, at society, at my family, at my partner, at all the bigots and their stupid conservative religions and belief systems, and everything in this world that's held me back and tried forcing me back into the closet...... just really pissed off at this whole world that tries to suffocate and murder us while forcing us to fit into this depressing charade of a life, and every moment we're prevented from transitioning, we're dying.

I watched this a few days ago with my dad and brother. My brother, who is a cishet blossoming film bro, told us he thought it was well made but that there was no deeper meaning. It's disillusioning and sad for me that in a way this film's messaging itself isn't clear for people who have never taken any time to think about or witness queer experiences (my brother has never been involved with my transition and we've rarely talked about it, my dad who has been involved meanwhile said he thought the movie was very sad and impactful with its existential angst even tho I don't know that he picked up on the trans specific themes). It's shocking to me sometimes how the experiences, themes, media, etc that are so integral to my life are so unimaginable for cishet folks, especially when they don't consume any queer media
Anyways moral is we *need* more movies like this, I loved it and think I'll love it more with each rewatch :))

I’m an older trans woman who couldn’t transition because there’s was no way to get it. Being different made it nearly impossible to be stable financially so there was no way to pay the high out of pocket for it. Plus not knowing all the aspects of transitioning was a deterrent. I started my transition at 57 in 2017. I’m now fully transitioned and passable but how I look was only a small part of fixing myself from the horrible ways I felt about myself from years of social and family rejection.

When Owen first approached Maddy he goes and leans against a pink vending machine saying "Body" and "Totally natural".

The ending of the movie so perfectly captures what it’s like to be in the closet later in life, feeling like you are always dying and feeling like you need to apologize constantly to everyone for your existence. It’s hard not to be overly bleak about the ending, though Isabelle’s* seeing the glow still alive inside her does show that there IS still time, it’s never too late. She doesn’t have to live this tortured existence. I left feeling very melancholy, though I also left hoping for the best for her going forward.

I am so grateful that I have a partner that allowed me the safety to deconstruct so much trauma and be myself, to support me in the face of being perceived by an often very mean world. I am alive and thriving because I made this leap of faith in coming out and starting medical transition, and it hurts so much to see others trapped where I've been.

I’m somebody going through the same situation as Owen, no I don’t mean stuck inside a TV lol. But, I realised I was trans almost 6 years ago and still not coming out. I constantly feel empty, even though it’s pride month I feel like that.I keep telling myself just forget and try to be a Ci’s man, but I know I’m a trans women, but I guess burying your sadness is all part of being a man. I wish I realised it sooner, I was fine before I realised though, I was very stereotypically masculine and still am., which hurts most because it makes my identity make even less sense, but I did watch feminine shows like Hannah Montana and Pretty Little Liars. I still love feminine media, I watched the Twilight films unironically, and cried while the other half of my brain realising how bad they are. I try to tell myself it’s fine to be a guy who likes feminine media, but a part of me wishes she grew up watching these with her mates. It’s so fucked, my brain is a mess and I hate that the only way to fix it to be a minority that gets discriminated against constantly on social media and in public. Being a man is easy, it’s honestly a cheat code in life, I don’t have to worry about perverts, being harassed or looking pretty for a male perspective, but I’m never happy. I have so much love or respect for the people who are brave enough say fuck you to all of that and be determined enough to be themselves. I hope I can be like that one day.
My parents and friends know I’m trans, but I didn’t feel like they were fully supportive even though they were accepting, especially from my Dad. They said they would still love me no matter what, but the difficulty for them to wrap their head around what I was going through turned me away alongside my difficulty to commit. The hour long conversations of me trying to explain myself felt uncomfortable. I know they’ll come around to it, but the fear and paranoia of being judged by them is horrible and I don’t want to upset them by changing. They all said they felt like they were losing me, and I know transitioning isn’t easy for anyone but I don’t want to hurt them or potentially lose them when I love them so much. It feels selfish, but it’s not healthy to hurt myself mentally for other people’s happiness.
If you’ve read all this thank you. Honestly, the only reason I’m commenting this giant comment is because I know this is a safe place, and there’s multiple people who have felt like this. Samantha’s videos help me a lot, what started as me finding out what trans is, became oh shit this is me from the first video of her’s I watched. Anyways, happy pride month. 🏳️‍🌈

I’m not trans. I’m a cis gay man. But I can really relate to the feeling of being connected to a tv character. Specifically the character of Justin from Queer As Folk. I came out around the same age. Dated an older guy like he did. Had a lot of the same experiences. That show came out at a crucial part of my life and meant a lot to me. I can’t even watch it now because the nostalgia rushes over me. It’s like watching my life.

As a later-life transitioner, this hit home really hard. In part because I was right about that age at the time this film was portrayed, and because it mirrored a lot of what I felt my entire life. As a kid having a fantasy you always wanted then being told you can have it but you need to do something drastic (in Owen's case, running away from home). For some kids they do it but for Owen and myself the logical part of it brain wins out and we stuff those thoughts away because they're "just a fantasy". Then he gets older having ignored that side of himself for years and it comes up again. This time it's more real, there's more context, it's more plausibly true. Unfortunately to achieve it requires more drastic steps. It requires you to kill your existing life (for Owen this is a quite literal thing) and still have faith without direct evidence that it'll work out in the end. So despite wanting it so bad again the logical mind wins out you push it away bury the feelings and push on with life. True acceptance didn't come until much much later when living that life your current life wasn't mentally and physically possible anymore. Again the parallels to my life are kinda shocking, and in some ways really sad.

You asked for if we received boys don't do that comments, too often in my childhood, looking back 45 years this happened over all sorts of things, baking, sewing, crochet, hair and beauty so I never even asked about ballet or dance.
It didn't change my core essence, I was diagnosed with gender disphoria and started cross sex hrt almost 34 years ago. It enabled me to become more me.
Conversely some years later when I announced I want to learn how to ride a bike and get a Harley, I was told 'but girls don't ride motorcycles'.
You only have one life, so live it.
Hugs to all in this somewhat difficult Pride month for Trans youth in the UK.

I know this movie must be so cathartic to trans people, and in a way I find it interesting because it wasnt the transness where i connected with this movie, since im not trans, but i was still sobbing at the thought of owen being so terrified to live his (her? :3) true self and letting his life go by until he just exploded at that birthday party, screaming for help while the whole world around him went silent and unreacting. I am struggling with a lot of things in my life and I'm terrified every day that it'll be like this forever. I know I could change it somehow but I'm so scared and paralysed.
Anyway, the reason I found it interesting is because I bet many transphobes have no issue relating to someonw being scared to take a risk/change something in order to be happy, but as soon as it's about transness somehow all empathy/sympathy goes out the window. lmao anyway.
    10/10 movie ♥

I get wanting the explicit trans narratives for the recognition but I think metaphor and allegory are much more powerful in explaining to people who are really willing to listen. It poeticizes the feelings that grow out of transness and allow them to be understood.
I was in a deep depression a few years ago coming to terms with being trans and I just kept thinking of myself as Kafka's Metamorphosis that I had read back in school. It's not about transness but self perception and a feeling of uselessness, of being a burden, of being a freak. For me it was a trans story because I identified with it through being trans. Trans stories should be the reverse of that in my opinion.

I feel like the perfect horror movie to depict how the brain and body are seperate with trans folk would be a trans take on Frankenstein, but with more of a psychological focus. Just FYI The Pink Opaque is based off of a lot of shows for pre-teen/teens in the 90's. "Are you Afraid of the Dark" "Pete and Pete" "Eerie Indiana' "The Secret World of Alex Mack". Yes a lot of them were weird but in a good way. I don't think the children of today could stomach those shows much less understand how much it affected kids growing up in the 90's.

I am trans, watching this movie I didn't necessarily find it trans specific. The plot could also apply to a fem gay man, a non-binary person, a gender queer/fluid person, someone interested in female drag.
The writer left the main character 's identity undisclosed so that anyone could relate their experience to his.
You saw him as a trans woman, so obviously the writer did an awesome job with their character development choices 😊

The first time I ever felt truly seen in a piece of media was when I watched this Disney Channel movie called The Swap when I was like 16, and I became infatuated with that movie particularly the character of Jack. Basically the movie is about these two high schoolers who are both grieving the loss of a parent. Ellie (Played by Peyton List) is grieving her dad abandoning her, and Jack (Played by Jacob Bertrand) is grieving the loss of his mother. They’re also both struggling to deal with the different ways boys and girls are gendered in society and the pain that can come with that. So one day they both say they wish they had the other person’s life and some disney magic happens and they switch bodies. Basically the rest of the movie is them learning to deal with the loss of their parent and their personal problems while living as the other person.
I’ll preface the rest of this by saying I am not trans. But I’m a gay man, and at the time I watched this I was a gay teenage. That being said the character Ellie felt the most real and personal to me, particularly when she switches into Jack’s body. When she switches with Jack, she goes from being this star gymnast living with her mom to being a hockey player living with these two hyper masculine boys (Jacks Brothers) and their dad who’s the head hockey coach. And the thing about Jack’s actor, Jacob, is that he plays Ellie in Jack’s body so closely to what I experienced as a kid that when I saw it I almost cried. Ellie as a character is the exact opposite of masculine, and she’s even kind of afraid of masculinity, so seeing her in this male, pretty masculine, body felt like my experience as a gay feminine boy. Jacob portrays the new Jack as very understandingly feminine where as the joke is that he’s now afraid of anything “Boy” related, but he’s also very sweet and kind to the people in his life who he once didn’t like, and the femininity never felt like the punchline. Like it just felt so natural to the character, and I remember thinking when I watched it “If I didn’t know this was a body swap movie, I would have just assumed this character is a gay boy.” And after I finished the movie, I had a thought like that was the first time I’d ever felt like I saw myself correctly portrayed in a movie.

I think it's better that Owen's identity has been left unconfirmed. I very much related to Owen as a gay man. I was always being told by my parents to not do things they found to be for girls or wear certain colors or clothes. I feel the story of the main characters applies to queer community as a whole as we have 2 versions of ourselves - one created to meet the expectations and norms of the society and the true one which takes a lot of work and courage to discover and live proudly with.
I think it was suggested that Maddy's character is trans, though. After coming back for Owen (supermarket scene) Maddy's appearance is more masculine and they keep repeating Maddy is not their real name anymore.

I've had similar sentiments with the film. I love that's there's a more up front reflection of "the horrors of coming-of-age" and beyond [what staying in the closet can do to you] - but it could of been more explicit in the origin of the pain. I would of been satisfied if they made the dress scene more than just a flashback.
    - - Mild spoilers - -
My one gripe with the plot was the bench scene where he said if someone were to open his chest where his heart should be, it would be empty, my ace roomie and I thought it would be some ace representation but it was instead in reference to escapism. Also I unfortunately can't confidently recommend this movie to anyone with major struggles around dissociative/derealization because inviting your bestie to be buried alive to escape to a new reality? Not the best "caterpillar emerging from their cocoon" metaphor for liberation I would of chosen but it is a horror film.
