Thank you for doing the review! Really happy you are loving our range!! To clarify with the clears over chrome, what is happening is that the solvents in the clears are reactivating and rearranging the pigment in the chrome. The chrome pigment is a certain shape that needs to lay completely flat on the surface to show the most reflective side to get that mirror look (this is also why a gloss base must be used (colour doesn't matter, black is always best but different colours give different tonal changes to the chrome)). Applying a solvent based clear over the top will reactivate the chrome and move the pigments around in such a way that the reflective side is no longer facing up, effectively killing the mirror effect. Using a water based clear as you've done in the video is the only way to top coat chromes but you will still lose shine due to that extra layer of paint. Looking forward to seeing your next videos on our paints! :)
@@barbatosrex9473 yeah, it’s been a lot like searching for unicorns, damned be Wave for making their Knights of Gold line in that ugly yellow, instead of a gold chrome plastic.
@@ShineAqua we have been working on it, but it is not easy to produce. We can make a high shine gold, but not a mirror chrome gold that can be sprayed.
The issue with the Jet Black is more due to the application and the type of plastic underneath. As it is a high gloss, the paint itself is slightly hotter than the regular gloss sheen paints in our range. It needs to be applied in one or two light coats first, leave dry for a little and then do another couple of coats making sure the last one is a bit heavier. With Bandai plastics in particular, they can react if exposed to too much solvents (ie. if too much paint is applied too soon and too heavy). Some Japanese brand primers can also have this issue with the same paint, it's a chemical reaction due to the high gloss part of the paint. Try dropping the PSI down to 12, apply in lighter coats and closer to the piece, you should see a better result over primer. We've adjusted the formula earlier this year as well, so the risk of this happening on newer batches is a lot less than the bottle you have.
I just got the Iwata neo airbrush for my birthday. Don't have a compressor yet. But Harbor Freight opens in my town on Tuesday and I'm getting that airbrush/compressor combo. I've never airbrushed before, but your videos give me a sense of confidence going into it. Thanks for that, sir.

Great to see your test of the SMS paints. Love the lighter chrome finish. I've been using them now for a couple of years and never any issues, and Scott at SMS is really responsive if I have ever had any questions. I'm looking forward to the test of the others from the SMS range. Thanks Robert
You’ve saved me a bunch of money this year. I’m a color junkie and I have a habit of buying anything new that I see, just to check them out. But I usually buy 10 colors. You’ve done a couple brands that I planned to buy but didn’t need too after watching your video. Of course, on the other side, I’ve learned about a couple more that I will be buying to play with. I also have a crazy amount of automotive paint and pearls, water and solvent based, that I haven’t played with yet. I like chrome paints but I always seem to screw them up trying to color or candy, over it.
That’s a fantastic Chrome! I’m really hoping to get an airbrush soon so that I can start using these pristine metallics that I just don’t get with handpainting. Appreciate what you do, you’re a great channel to have in the community.
Love your videos B.R.! Finally broke my airbrush/comp out after years of dust collection because I couldn’t lay anything nice down. With your help, I’m hooked again, only now I’m getting good results. Think I’m gonna give the SMS a try. Thanks for all you do, bro!
Just recently got my airbrush. Finally ready to transition from hand painting to air brush. Thanks so much for your videos! They really are super helpful. Also....... Those chromes look so slick

Everytime I go on my home page RUclips recommends a video of yours to watch, and I can't help but click. Thank you for all your hard work, the content is amazing as well as fascinatingly addictive 🙏
Your video are the best on paints and chrome for Gundam,I have never tried a Gundam and I am going to get one so I can paint it and make it for my grandson ,and I want to paint cars to and finally have my bench setup and my paint booth next and your new lacquer paint to start .I have watched your videos for months now and have learn a lot from you like all the tools and supplys and you know how to teach us thank you Barbatos !
The Strike Gundam would be perfect for my son. I got him the RX-78-2 last Christmas, and he loved building it. He is pretty young so they are a good difficultly for him, but I was really impressed with how it looked.
I finally got an airbrush setup and some paints to practice with, now I just need to find a good place to spray. Been loving all the videos and teachings. Keep up the great work.
Honestly I'm digging the cold tone on red!! I always wanted to recreate a rose gold for gunpla and that is a prefect combo!! Again loving all the great tips your test on the Colani airbrush is a winner in my book!! Can't wait for the next review, Take care Rex
Love these chrome vids. I'm still just getting started with airbrushing and am really interested in getting a good chrome. Keep up the great work man and rock on! 🤘🏻
Mr. Barbatos Rex, thank you for a great video and for introducing another great chrome. There's a logical reason for the results you had when you made that spray. I am a fan of SMS, I think that's a great company. Kudos.
These paints looks so awesome! I went to look online and not only the chromes, but the crystals and pearls look super interesting, will have to get them for my own! Thank you so much for your videos, BR, you're the man!
I just got into Warhammer models a couple of weeks ago. Your videos are really helpful for learning the hobby. My favorite are when you test air brushes and compressors.
Sweet looking chrome. I looks forward to seeing the tests from SMS. I have Alclad and GSW chromes so I'll wait to try this until after I run out of those. Thanks for the video!
Come from the land of SMS, love their stuff, thanks to them I always have access to good hobby paint. Can't wait to see the file test, I have just got the clear mechanics HWS hi-nu gundam and need to find something that'll lesson the polishing I believe I'll need for the nubs. Do you think I should wait upgrade to godhand or will the dspiae single edge clipper be good enough? I think the quality would be wasted on an animal like me anyway LoL 😆 keep up the work 🤘
It being an acrylic lacquer does it mean if I spray over lacquer paints ie, Mr hobby it'll hold? Because its odd that it says acrylic water based top coat ONLY on its website.
Thank you. That SMS is great. I am super impressed with your results. I fully agree not to top coat them. Besides. A completed model should not be touched anyway. Cover them with a plexiglass box to protect.
I dCo like SMS paints but have been gearing towards MCW for automotive models and Alclads of course. I might have to just go a buy a few jars and get busy with them though SMS usually produces really great finishes. Great video as always Rex!!!
Very nice, it looks like a pretty good chrome. I'm really interested to see their color-shifts, pearls, and candies and see how they stack up. It's just a thought, but I was thinking it might be interesting if you incorporated your catchphrase on one your pieces of merchandise. "Welcome back, to the bench!" I can imagine a dramatic posed gundam with your phrase splashed across the top. I don't know why, but it makes me crack a smile every time I watch one of your videos.
Good looking product. Since most of my chrome painting is mouldings on car kits I am using molotow since it does not have to be sprayed over black. May try this or greenstuff world when I run out.
Would love to get into large-scale Gundam models, as I already have some experience from building and painting sci-fi (Games Workshop, mainly) miniatures. I also wanted to say that I'm loving the consistent uploads. That's all! :)
