- It's about time I upload this.
Originally intended as an experiment to render decent looking clouds at very little cost, it ballooned into the most ambitious project since the snowy video I made back in high school. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work on this for awhile. Partly because of time, partly because at the point where I stopped, the video had become exponentially more complex than I originally intended.
Has a working title of Freelancer Aces. It became a sort of combination of Freelancer and Ace Combat. Taking heavy cues from Ace Combat for the visual style of flying, and using the Freelancer assets in a setting they haven't really been used before was great fun.
I'm still not sure if this will ever be finished. I certainly want to, but it would require much fore-thought and time to finish it in a satisfactory manner. As I said before, any future scenes of this would be exponentially more complex to animate than the simple fly by animations that consist of most of it. I hope someday to get around to finishing it. I really do like it.
Ship/Missile model credits go to Digital Anvil, the creators of Freelancer. Music is "Open the War" from the Ace Combat 5 soundtrack. All footage animated and rendered in Lightwave 3D. Composited in Adobe Premier.

I see this and am reminded of that news report in the Colony News Service about a Lane Hacker who won an LA surf competition and fled with the trophy on a ship right after a spectator working for Ageira Technologies identified him as a Hacker.
What can I say ? This is a masterpiece built by a pro ( or pros ). crashbx is right. If Why485 made a movie with this quality, it will be undoubtedly awesome. Maybe it can kick lots of current movies' ass.
This is brilliant. If you ever get back to it I would love to see the ships transition into space, as their dogfight involves one (or more) capital ships... lol god now I'm telling a story, kinda ambitious of me...

@masternerdguy I always had a feeling that was the case, but until you said it I never really had proof of it.
For some reason the Dagger doesn't look like it would stay airborne for very long. Just the wing span. But it doesn't matter this video is still awesome!

This really looks amazing. I always thought the Defender was the coolest looking fighter in Freelancer, nice to see it brought to life like this.
Dude you should make your own Freelancer Movie, this stuff is awesome. I totally agree with crashbx. You should make a movie of short episodes. I wish I could do this. Or at least show who wins the fight.

Great start, I hope for the final version you add things like radio chatter back and forth between pilots calling targets and calling missile launches, also the four bird formation before they split after being shot at, should lay down some flare/chaff as they split, that'd be awesome. Keep it coming.

Realistically (heh), the crafts would not need to bank so drastically in order to move in atmosphere. Since they have shield technology, they can just change the shape of the shield bubble to act as airfoils and control surfaces.

Uh, daggers... My favorite ship... I used to get one of these, get the best equipment for it(Rank 4 I think it was) and go to level 10 missions... It could be done, you just needed to think insted of just blast away.

You have to import it into milkshape 3d with the Freelancer CMP Importer Plugin, then export it to .3ds :)
@crashbx Indeed, and then when they found out the Freelancer community was a group of giant RP'ing mentally unstable psychopaths that catastrophically restrict how you're 'allowed' to play a "be what you want to be, do what you want to do" type of game and then accuse you of ruining the FL community when you just want to mess around and play for the sake of having fun, they'll leave it immediately.

@Frozen45Throne freelancer 2 is never coming out......sadly is what everybody says, even the producers of the game it self. I still play freelancer after 2004....so its about 7 years....cant get tired of that titan :) freelancer will live on for many years...

@MrPupipopo No it's not, not even close. Standard code with some custom ships and systems is all. What makes it for some players is the RP element. FL2? Nowhere near!!
The models are strait out of the game, low poly for nowadays standard but looking great!

I'm late but i want to say the comments here illustrate exactly why I don't play games in MP. Because people suck. When i play with npcs, i don't have to deal with either RP "nazis" or ppl wanting to discuss real life. 15 yrs ago when Ultima Online came out I thought this was too good to be true. Then i tried it and realised how a terrible idea it was. Suddenly games were like HS and i was made to socialize with people i never want to talk to IRL. No thanks. I'll take a souless npc ANY DAY.
