At age 12, Steve Perry of Journey heard Sam Cooke's song "Cupid" on his mother's car radio, and it inspired him to become a singer. If you listen to Perry closely you can hear Cooke's influence

I never realized just how much Sam comes through in Steve’s voice. ❤️ You can hear it *so* clearly in this song. Sam is also mentioned in Steve’s “Captured by the Moment” and he’s never stopped talking about how powerful and influential he was.

Sam Cooke had so many good recordings! You Send Me, Wonderful World and Chain Gang were big hits in the same vein as Cupid. My mother used to sing I Love You For Sentimental Reasons in the early 60s when I was a little kid. That's Where Its At and Twistin' The Night Away are some of my other favorites. His two big live albums have him at the Copa in New York, and at a local night club. That second live album is more energetic, showing how Cooke would change it up depending on the audience.
    Thanks for reacting to Cupid.

Perfect choice for Valentine's Day. Sam Cooke ruled at our house. When my youngest was two, Granny sent her a bear in a chef's apron and hat. She named it Sam Cooke. I guess she thought that in addition to being a singer, he was a real cook. LMAO
Years ago, my late husband once forgot about Valentine's Day until it arrived. He grabbed a bar of soap and drew me a valentine on the bathroom mirror. I was so tickled by it that it became a tradition. After he died, my daughters continued the tradition for me whenever they remembered. It's fun because it happens randomly.

Johnnie Taylor, Lou Rawls, & Bobby Womack worked with Sam early in their careers before they were famous. Lou is the 2nd voice on Sam's "Bring It On Home To Me". There's a remake of that by George Benson, Al Jarreau, & Paul McCartney (all 3 together). Johnnie was also in the gospel groups HIghway QC's & Soul Stirrers which Sam had been a member of both groups, but not at the same time as JT. Before Herb Alpert started his band The Tijuana Brass, he had worked with Sam too.

Loves me some Sam Cooke! Every time I hear a song by him all I can of is the '80s movie Innerspace. It has Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, and Meg Ryan. It's a fun flick you guys should react to if you haven't seen it yet. His music is a good part of the story. Much love guys!

Such a voice! Lovely song writing. Hey for another romantic song for Valentines, I highly suggest Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". Also a beautiful song and great vocals. You guys are so cute, love your back-and-forth chats about the songs you react to. 👍

One Sam Cooke recording that both of you MUST react to, is his 1963 live concert performance of his hit song, “Bring It On Home To Me.” It was part of a concert album that was recorded in 1963 at the Madison Square Nightclub, in Miami, Florida. RCA Records at the time felt that the concert performance was too raw for his fans in the international market, and shelved the concert album until 1985 (Cooke then recorded a Pop-style concert at the Copacabana Nightclub in New York City in early 1964). This 1963 concert performance is the best vocal performance of Cooke’s career. He sings with an incredible amount of emotion, and works the nightclub crowd into a frenzy. Highly recommended. A Five Star concert performance.

Well done, you are right, what a voice this man had. He was one of the great tenors of the 50s up to the early 60s.Allow me to recommend three songs that you don't hear often, Only Sixteen, The Chain Gang and When A Boy Falls In Love.Sam Cooke left the music world too soon.Looking forward to your reaction.

I love you for Sentimental Reasons is terrific. Actually heard it on an old episode from American Bandstand in 57 and so glad I did

Sam did so many covers where he could display the phenomenal range and skills he had. Falling in Love, Teenage Sonato, Just A Country Boy, and The Riddle Song to name just a few. His gospel is great too. Lord Remember Me, The Last Mile the Way, and so many many many more!
