I'm almost 80 year-old and and a Sam Cooke fan since I was a teen. This is one of his best creations. This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. Thank you for this selection and your thoughtful words. I lone your analysis.

I'm about 10 years behind you and like you, it makes my eyes sweat every time I hear it.
And the sad part is that after all these years, we're still not there yet...
I was a kid when I heard this for the first time. I didn't understand why this song had my parents tearing up. My father was born during the Jim Crow era in Mississippi, in 1944. My mother (born and raised in Ohio) would visit her side of the family in Louisiana in the 1950s often. They both saw and dealt with....a lot.
They're both gone now and I'm a 41-year-old woman having to explain this to my children when they see me tear up listening to this.
This cycle desperately needs to end.

It's so good to see another generation fall in love with Sam Cooke. He was a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's first class of inductees -- founding fathers of R&R. Sam was in good company, along with Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmie Rogers, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, and Buddy Holly.
I’ve heard this song so many times, and I’m a 28 year old white dude, I’m certainly not coming from the same place he was coming from, but at this point in my life, it hits perfect. It perfectly expresses how I feel inside, so desperate for a change, trying to hold on just a little bit longer for something good that’s hopefully right around the corner. It’s just amazing how a song written about a totally different situation, from a completely different person, was not only created for that....it was also created for me, and dozens of other people in different situations. Somehow one song connected all of us. To me songs like this just keep affirming to me that some things are just 10000% meant to be. This song was meant to be written and meant to be recorded exactly how it was, by Sam Cooke specifically, and it was meant to be there for us when we needed it. In the past couple of years, I’ve struggled with my belief in what’s beyond all of this, and lately, more and more songs come around that I’ve probably heard endless times, and they hit me in such a way that I think “there’s no possible way everything is just random and meaningless.” There just can’t be. Everything is far too perfect. Music does that for me. If there were no music, I’m confident I couldn’t live in this world. It may be all I’ll ever have, but it may be all I’ll ever need.
That's real. This shows that hate is taught. It obviously wasn't taught In your home and thats wonderful. Sam cooke will always be the greatest singer ever. Handsome brother that was way ahead of his time, he also was the first black artist to own his own label. Check out "nearer to thee" that's another song that shows how talented he was.

I love me some Sam Cooke. I remember these songs mainly because my older cousins would listen to his music. I was born in the 60's in Texas. I know what racism is about. I have seen it and I have lived it. This is not going to be a popular statement. But it was a lot worse then than it is now. There are good and bad people in every race. There are good and bad police. We have made progress every decade, every year. I remember the conflicts of the 60's and the early 70's. We have started up again and race relations have gotten worse since President Obama came into office. I remember back in school when a Black female friend of mine came to school dressed in KKK outfit and she had no problems. It was for Halloween she rocked it. No one cared. If I remember correctly she won the contest that year for best costume. I remember also being accused when I was like 4 of stealing a shirt by a white woman. You move on and past those things. Those are ignorant people. I don't hate them, but I don't like them either. I don't have time to hate those people. I have no time for them. People talk about slavery in this country. There was slavery for about 80 years. 80 years too long, but still the first man to own a slave was a black man. He owned both white and black slaves and he went to court to get it approved. Before that there were indentured servants. That means they could buy their way out of servitude. When Washington and Jefferson died they freed their slaves. Adams never had any and fought to free them under the Constitution. We had many abolitionist that want to get rid of slavery before the Civil War. The Irish were treated so bad in America that they died by the thousands every year. Not every slaves had a death rate as high as the Irish. There are a lot of thing that aren't talked about in our history that should be, but it wasn't as one sided as a lot of people make it out to be. If were as bad as they make it out to be there would be no people of color in Congress. I also believe that music it a powerful medium. I believe it can bring us together again.

Sam Cooke was Muhammad Ali's favorite singer. Sam wrote "A Change Is Gonna Come" in response to hearing Bob Dylan's "Blowing In The Wind", and he said I could write one of these.
So highly underrated isn’t he? If I mention him to an older person, most of them have at least heard of him, but as far as everyone else goes, they just have no idea. They’ve probably heard him a million times in the movies and just don’t know. A lot of people have the fear of missing out, I have a genuine fear that so many people are gonna miss out on great songs like this strictly because they don’t wanna give it a chance. Everyone knows everything these days...

He was the R&B star just before Sam Cook (wich strangely he has a very very similer sounding voice, only just a bit of a higher range). He also did Fever, I'm Shakin, All Around The World and his version of Flamingo takes the absolute cake. I just love the area were R&B turned into Soul music. A forgotten generation I think.

Sam cooke had 50 top 80 hits in his career one number 1 a couple number 2s at one point had 5 songs in the top 100. and was the second best seller on rca Records behind elvis. It's this generation that don't like to dive into past history for whatever reason but Sam was the 2nd biggest artist not even Willie John outsold Sam cooke. He just died long ago. But he has own street in Chicago called Sam cooke way. Hollywood walk of fame start. Recently he was portrayed in one night in miami.. he has 2 songs in the hall of fame I can keep going lol trust me he was huge in the 60s. It's the way he died that hurt his career that's why they killed him the way they did..that plus Allen Klein shady business tactics nobody is able to sample his music etc. That hurt his career

Yes Sister I'm an Australian Aboriginal and I'm right there with you. I've got to say I'm 72 and I've been very lucky while a lot of my people, not so lucky. At the same time it didn't matter to me what your background was, if you needed help I would not hesitate to help because to me we are all the same. And that attitude got me into a lot of trouble with my own people. Anyway take care Sis. And I really wish things where different and there are people from all walks of life that are really good people.

Sam Cooke was a big favorite of mine as a teenager. He still is. I was 16 when was killed. I never stopped listening to his music. This song always makes me so emotional. It is sad but so full of hope. Still it has been a long time coming.

A beautiful voice and a beautiful song from someone who clearly had a difficult life. There are so many singers with tragic lives and early deaths who have left behind there music to be appreciated for ever. What a wonderful legacy and comfort it must be for their families. One of the most recent in the UK has to be that of Amy Winehouse, a smoky, soulful voice cut way to short but what songs she left us, well worth a listen !

I’m a 30yr old white man from Alabama and Sam Cooke and Otis Redding were my favorite musicians. I remember being in 2nd grade listening to Otis Reddings greatest hits and asking my mother why he hasn’t made anything after his greatest hits album and she told me about his life and death. Needless to say I bawled my eyes out. It’s 2022 and I still listen to Sam Otis and the temptations at least twice a week

I'm a 75 yr old and his concert was my first big concert. I was a super white, blonde, blue eyed teenager from the south and myself and my friend were the only caucasians there. I got his autograph after the show. James Brown was my next big show. I love all genres and have seen Pavarotti, rockers, blues, jazz, country, blue grass, show tunes, gospel and whatever I left out. Grateful I got to see it live.

The illegitimate daughter of Sam Cooke lives in my hometown of Syracuse NY. She some 10 years ago became executor of her Father Sam’s estate. She told me this 3 years ago or so. She said that her father held her at birth and then left her and her mother.

He was the Son of a Minister who had a Storefront Church in Chicago, Ill, and he started out in a Gospel Group called The Soul Stirrers, then he went Secular. He was also the King of Romance back in the day with "You Send Me". He was a major influence on Smokey Robinson whose song "Bring On Home To Me" would later inspire "You've Really Got A Hold On Me". This was featured in Malcolm X, and in The UK A Soap Actress named Shona McGarty did her version and bought the House down. She plays Whitney Dean on Eastenders. His Songs have been featured in Movies like Animal House, and Breathless. Sadly enough he was assassinated by a Lady who thought he was a prowler. One of his other songs "Shake" was later covered by his Buddy Otis Redding and now his Catalogue is owned by The Late Michael Jackson.
