- Let us delve into a twist of fate, my dears. The Dashwoods, upon receiving surprising news of Lucy Steele and Mr. Ferrars' engagement, mistakenly assume it's Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant). However, Edward himself arrives, dispelling this misunderstanding. This turn of events unburdens Edward, allowing him to finally propose to his beloved Elinor (Emma Thompson).

🎬Sense and Sensibility (1995): When Elinor Dashwood's (Emma Thompson) father dies, her family's finances are crippled. After the Dashwoods move to a cottage in Devonshire, Elinor's sister Marianne (Kate Winslet) is torn between the handsome John Willoughby (Greg Wise) and the older Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman). Meanwhile, Elinor's romantic hopes with Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant) are hindered due to his prior engagement. Both Elinor and Marianne strive for love while the circumstances in their lives constantly change.

Edward Confesses: “I come here with no expectations, only to profess, now that I am at liberty to do so, that my heart is and always will be...yours.”
Such an eloquent portrayal of affection!
❤so nice
Ator excelente!!!!
Já assisti este filme dezenas de vezes.
No final, sempre me emociono.
" My heart is and always will be, yours!!!!🥰
I break down and cry at this scene every time. Elenor had held her emotions in for so long. Then the damn burst.
❤ me encanta esta película ❤
Two centuries after it was first written, this scene remains resonant - especially through this phenomenal adaptation with these fantastic actors - because it represents the fulfillment of a fantasy that we all have at some point in our lives (even though it isn’t always fulfilled in real life) … The fantasy that someone, for whom you believe you harbor a deep unrequited love, comes to your doorstep and confesses that they’ve actually loved you back all this time. A universal dream.
Agreed. Your comment is so beautifully written. 🥰
It truly is just that!
Though it creates illusion which in most cases is not true.
Favourite sense and sensibilutis ya pride and prejydiise my poor en so lije them nise na
Emma lije manisha beatiful palses gardens plases o my god love lively 😅😅❤❤
Love Edward accidentally sitting on the embroidery. Details like that make everything seem more real
I had the same thought! And the way he fidgets with the porcelain figurines on the shelf. It just lends a certain realness and plausibility to the scene. I love it.
Yes, like the smudge of soot above the candle on the mantle.
🥰
absolutely !!
Yes!
The way Emma portrays control and restraint during this whole movie then the realization and relief !!!
My favorite scene of all movies ever!🌟🌟🌟
Wow!
Yes 😅❤
i cried too..
@@varsharajput4166me too. I’ve watched this movie countless times and cry at this scene every time.
I assume you mean Eleanor?
The way they all haul ass out of the room always gets me lol❤
I love this scene. Poor Edward thinking they would be happy to see him, and it was so awkward. Mrs. Dashwood looked shocked at the sobbing, and Margaret stared at Eleanor like she'd lost her mind. The relief on his face before he even started to explain. It was all so well done.
They were indeed all happy to see him. Mrs Dashwood was not shocked by the sobbing - she just did not know what to say, since she very well understood her daughter's reaction.
I always liked how that dreary cottage changed from depressing to a home.
Yes indeed - they fixed it up so nicely!
“Transfer of her affections” I’m gonna try to use words like this somewhere
Her affections transferred at the same time as his trust fund...😂
Hehe😢
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂@@audreykennedy90
In the wedding scene, walking out were 6 Harry Potter actors: Alan Rickman(Snape). Emma Thompson (Trelawny), Gemma jones (Nurse Pomfrey), Imelda Staunton (Umbridge), Robert Hardy (Fudge) with Elizabeth Spriggs (Lady in portrait asking for password in first movie)
Oh wow
Well, there are only so many British actors. 😉
Spectacular ☺
As all did Harry Potter after this movie, maybe do a reframe that Harry Potter has 6 actors from Sense and Sensibility.
“Calm. We must be calm.” Priceless.
Basically, “Act normal, everybody!” As they rush about frantically.
I have to admit, this denouement caught me completely off-guard when I first saw it. I was so moved. I was expecting a happy ending, but to witness the unravelling of enormous pent-up, hidden emotions that will no longer be held back...Wonderful acting. An absolute joy.
Colonel Brandon was my favourite character, but I love this scene!
Mine too!! Allan Rickman was wonderful, & I will never forgive him for dying..😢
I don't think he did on purpose
But you're right. We miss him deeply
I simply melt when he reads aloud to Marianne! Swoon! 🥰🥰🥰
Me to they were meant to be together
Oh this is done so beautifully by all the actors but of course especially so by Emma Thompson. I've watched this movie more times than I can count and this is possibly one of the most powerfully romantic moments in movie history. It brings tears to my eyes every time. This scene is also done well in the 2008 TV adaptation.
Indeed!
I love that version too!
Same here❤
I’m crying! Why am I crying ?? I’ve seen this scene a dozen times or more and I’m crying like a baby!

Austen is perfection. Ang Lee is perfection. Thompsons script is perfection. All performances are perfection. Its simply perfect.
exactly !!
The very first time I saw this film (now one of my all time faves) I was caught off guard by how much this confession of love and Emma's perfect performance moved me to sobs. The way the scene builds and the way Eleanor is hyperventilating, it just reaches into your chest and gives your heart a big squeeze!
It most certainly does!
Indeed!❤
Perfect description of the scene - I’ve lost count of the many times I’ve watched it; also, what’s remarkable that Emma Thompson & Greg Wise who portrayed Willowby (spelling?) fell in love and got married! I need to check if they’re still together - I heard they had a daughter!
I shed tears just watching it again!
Dr. House pulling up at the wedding 😂
With Dolores Umbrage…or Lady Maude Bagshaw…or Vera Drake
And before he was with Fry and Lorrie, in the Blackadder Series and The home Alone series.
i always like it that Margaret remembered that when you can't think of what to say, talk about the weather.
Emma Thompson definitely captures the reality of a major emotional revelation, followed by a huge public freakout that you've totally failed to contain
I cannot watch Elinor's happy, sobbing smile without tearing up. Such pure, pure joy on her face, even while she's weeping. So beautiful!!
THIS MOVIE MAKES ME FEEL THAT THERE CAN BE JOY IN THIS AWFUL WORLD
When they all stand up and walk out I burst out laughing 😂
Oh dear me. No empathy I understand.
The best best best!!!!
I was young andI love and still love this version.
I especially love that Kate Winslett got really noticed after this.
And that Emma Thompson married Mr. Willoughby...in real life after they met on this movie set.
And they are still married and had kids.
Awesome.
Loved Colonel Brandon! So wonderful. May he rest in peace
Emma Thompson is really an excellent actress! My two
Most favorite scenes were when a sick Maryann confronts Elinor about Lucy Steele and Elinor’s response was epic! Also when the doctor said that they should prepare for the worst due to Maryann’s condition and Elinor cried and held her hand and said @Maryann dearest, please live for I cannot do without you” not an exact quote but the gist. I cried at both scenes! They were sooo well done by Emma! Really excellent acting
This is possibly my favorite ever scene by Emma Thompson.
Ah but @kristinewells961 has it as the best scene in all cinema history 😉
Two of my favorites are from Howard’s End, when she stands up to Henry Wilcox and gives him back the keys to the house, telling him she is leaving him because of his hypocrisy. That and also when she breaks down in her room after learning of his intimate past relations with Mrs. Bast.
I love this movie and i think its the best version of Sense and Sensibility. Emma Thompson is a fantastic actress and one of my favorites.
I must have watched it 50 times by now!
I love this movie soooo much! No one deserved love ad happiness more than Eleanor.
I love this scene so much! Hugh Grant is just so charming and Dame Emma Thompson is a straight up icon ❤
A fantastic adaptation, of which Jane Austen would surely have approved.
The way Emma Thompson mumbles after "then you're not" and then says "not married". I lover her. Oh, to mention the amount of comedy in the scence!
Fantastic movie- and the perfect screen play written by Emma, herself!
Emma Thompson won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay? wow 💘
She is quite the writer. Have you seen her acceptance speech? It's great.
@@713davidh42I think she said in an interview that she kept it in the guest bathroom next to a jar labeled “Oscar Polish” 😂 Love her so much!
The building of the tension throughout the movie leads you to that point. as she stoically tries to hide her emotions as happiness always misses her. then her final realization(and ours) that there is a happy ending. Her release of all that pent up emotion is so well done. it punches you in the gut.
Hugh Grant is the king of all cinema world-wide when it comes to emoting an awkward situation. And, imo, Emma Thompson just steals each and every scene, in each and every movie in which she's starred. And my country (USA) is the land of origin for movie brilliance. Great British period pieces are just impossible to beat.
I had read the book, and when my friend and I watched the movie, she asked whether Edward in the book was as odd as he is in the movie, and I was delighted to tell her that yes, he was as much of an oddball as Hugh Grant depicted him to be. I still would've changed some scenes in the movie, but who cares xD
Hugh Grant was definitely a lot more conventionally handsome than Edward was described in the books haha. But he really embodied that shy awkwardness of his character really well!
The regency era is one of my all time favorite eras! So romantic, the clothes for men and women are just so handsome and delightful! Oh, and the picnics! I love a good picnic while in beautiful gowns ❤
Emma’s reaction was totally real!! What a terrific scene!!
The speed they left the room always crack me up.😂 Love this scene❤
I loved this movie and have watched it countless times. The acting was superb, and then there's Colonel Brandon, one of my favorite actors, ever, the late great Alan Rickman ❤
My gosh I loved this whole scene, and I'm a dude. The look on Emma's face. Who couldn't be in love with that? And the way other ladies jus stand up and leave without saying anything. Amazing.
For all of us who adore this clip and have watched it more often then we care to admit (happy to admit it been many many times) I would like everyone to take a look at the acting skill of Gemma Jones in the moment Margaret says "he is kneeling down". Beautiful Kate Winslet is lovely in that moment and does what most good actors would do which is bring her hand to her mouth but Gemma Jones goes to a whole new level. She transitions through so many emotions before hugging her daughter - joy, relief, expectation, gratitude and sheer love. Its a masterclass in REACTING not acting. She is deeply undervalued in the appreciation of this film. The entire cast is superb and her performance is really worth focusing on the next time you view it.
She started crying..I started crying..😂
The first time I saw this scene I cried with Miss Dashwood. The music is beautiful.
Did anyone else know that Emma Thompson met ( on this movie set)and later married Mr Willoughby!!!
Had children together and are still married today!
Good casting job Emma!
The best movie
Had kids
Yep. Greg Wise. They met on this set.
Emma Thompson did a brilliant job on the film HER adaptation, the casting direction etc was phenomenal. Needless to say BRAVA !!!!
I have seen this movie countless times and have yet to make it through this scene without sobbing. 💜💜💜
This movie doesn't have even a single passionate moment and yet conveys purest form of love so beautifully...
"My heart is, and always will be, Yours" 💟💜💕
Oh I would die if someone said that to me - men just do NOT know how to woo these days 😏😏
Someone did say that to me, then 12 years later sodded off with a younger model.
@@MoominJude C'est la Vie ‼️ ... but .... "Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all" Tennyson
The whole thing was written by a woman. I wonder if a male author would have handled this differently?
@@yvonnecamacho7887 there are hundreds of romance novels by men
@@joline2730 Yes, of course. But the way they handle love is different. The politeness and lack of assumption that Edward speaks with sounds to me more what a woman would like to hear.
Such a classic - 200 years old and still amazing ...
I love Mother Dashwood saying "Calm, we must be calm"..... then pacing like mad woman a few minutes later
..”and my heart is.. and always will be.. yours.”
😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
Emma has one of the most beautiful smiles!!!
The gorgeous in this film . Young Hugh Grant, and Winslet is luminous
HUGH GRANT beauty peak. The ROM-COM KING 🔥
You can feel it when she cries every time
Sense gave way to Sensibility, and Sensibility to Sense.
This scene is perfection! Every detail, down to Margaret climbing to the tree house 'his kneeling down' followed by tears of joy.
Haven't seen this film in a while and I still become Niagara falls when I see it
The music when he said "my heart is and always will be yours" ❤
I love love that scene, Edward's confession is warm and sweet, what a great actors❤
I am forever madly in love with colonel Brandon!! 💜💜💜
same ❤
I adore this film ❤ I’m so glad I recorded it on my Dish Hopper so I watch it at least once a week! I was going to say that this is three films in which Emma Thompson has cries: the other two are Love Actually and I can’t remember the title of the other one but it also starred Sir Anthony Hopkins - her character loved Anthony for the longest time! By the way I bawled during Love Actually when she cried over Alan Rickman giving that other woman the beautiful necklace 😢😢😢😢
Eleanor is a good example of “if you hold your feeling’s for too long they will physically come out”.
Emma Thompson is beautiful and perfect for Elinor. As long as I see comments age-shaming her in this movie calling her too old, I’m gonna do the same with Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant.
Oh calm down. Elinor was supposed to be 19 years old. She doesn’t look 19 no matter how much girl power you look through. She played the role beautifully but if you read the book before you saw the movie it’s an easy issue to spot.
@@codename495 I know, but Colonel Brandon is 35 and not 50 and Alan Rickman doesn’t get as much criticism for that. I just visited facebook with a post this movie and many commented Emma’s age while I’m one of the few people to point out Rickman is too old as well. That’s why I’m cringing at all his fangirls for this movie. It’s the double standards I dislike. Hugh Grant looks too old to be believable for 23 as well
@@MaruChann94 still the same, Emma, Alan, and Hugh are not the same ages as the characters. if she get's the hate for being too old, the other two should as well. edward was also young, yet hugh grant has no criticism for being 35 years old here.
Honestly Hugh Grant looks young.
I really thought he's 20 something on this movie!! 😂
My one and only favorite remake. I absolutely love this film.
This is not my favorite Austen book, but this is one of my favorite parts of any of them. So real.
I consider this a perfect movie, absolutely beautiful.
That is one of the most romantic scenes in any film I've watched.
Her longing for Edward continued even when she thought he was married.
She was completely overwhelmed by emotions when Edward confessed his love for her.
By contrast Willoughby was a rake. Processing his love for the other sister not by words but by actions.
Rides in the country, long walks, reciting poetry and the biggest of all taking a sniper of her hair. That was huge on those days.
Willoughby was able to seduce women at a time when all women longed for a righteous man.
A perfect wedding in every way.
When seeing so many interviews with Hugh Grant talking about Emma Thompson you get there is such a sense of fun and mischief between the two and he refers to how daftly insane she is and how much fun they have, which really gives some insight into how their longtime friendship really is
Emma looks so beautiful in this scene 🥰
Emma?
Every time I watch this scene I am filled with tears… every time! Love this movie! 🥹
Still makes me cry after all of these years 😭
Still one of my favorite scenes, Emma Thompson shines.
This has always been my go-to film, Alan Rickman is just excellent, love the whole cast
The equivalent THEN of 'lightning' striking twice and getting TWO lottery jackpot tickets! 😂🍾🍾
One of the best films of all time!!
Everytime I watch this scene I start crying. They were all so spectacular.
Living in the USA for 20 years as an immigrant family and seeing all the downfalls in recent years, I just miss some of the old fashioned cultures.
I loved this movie.
I love that movie, I can watch it, hundreds of times ♥️♥️♥️
One of my favorite movies of all time and one of my favorite scenes of all time. The emotion is just so raw and well portrayed.
This is absolutely one of my all-time favorite scenes from this movie! Everything is so well done and the parts are played so beautifully by each person!
The awkwardness and the comedic elements there and even the way Eleanor burst into tears just cracks me up every single time and it's so humorous and so sweet all at once.
And you're so happy and overjoyed for her and then the way Edward expresses his heart and love to her is just beautiful as well! Well done all around! 🥰🥰🥰
And what a perfect final scene
Thinking about the whole story, the tradition of much older men marrying young women, and the women not being able to inherit land and property, seems quite cruel at the end of life.
There were some circumstances under which women _did_ inherit. In _Sense and Sensibility_ Mr. Dashwood can't provide for his daughters or second wife from the Norland estate because it doesn't even fully belong to him to begin with.
And if you think about it, at the time, _most_ people in England were a lot worse off than the Dashwood sisters. Compared to having to scrape a meager living from pennies earned on manual labor, having to watch your budget and live simply until you can find a husband with an estate...doesn't sound _so_ bad.(?) But yeah, economic opportunities definitely were unequally distributed among the men and women of the landed classes.
Bueno tampoco es que todos los hombres lo tuvieran fácil, solo podían heredar todo si eran el hijo mayor, si no solo podía aspirar a conseguír una buena heredera para casarse, que su hermano mayor fuera desheredado o muriera
For those of you who haven't, do yourself a favor & watch or rewatch Emma Thompson's Golden Globes acceptance speech.
I've often wondered if Edward was the minister who married Marianne and Col. Brandon.
I'll bet he was! Why not? And his dear wife, Elinor, was Marianne's matron of honor. :)
The recent-ish screen adaptations both have the two sisters getting married at the same ceremony. Which I guess seems like a nice, neat ending. But the novel definitely makes it sound like there was at least a couple years between Elinor getting settled and Marianne accepting Brandon.
@@harringt100 In this adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, Elinor and Marianne didn't have a double wedding. Elinor and Edward married, while Brandon courted Marianne for a couple years or so. That's how it is in the book. I haven't seen any newer adaptation than this one with Emma Thompson, am surprised they would veer so far from the book.
@@harringt100 In the 1995 film Elinor is not dressed like a bride. Also, Elinor and Edward are 3rd in line leaving the church behind Marianne and Brandon with their mother and youngest sister in between.
I lost count how many time I seen this movie, I might need to buy a new DVD of it 😄 ❤
This movie never gets old for me ❤
My favorite scene. One of my favorite movies. ❤
Bellissimo film, tutto inglese, attori bravissimi, ambientazioni fantastiche,da Oscar.

hugh grants entrances are a running joke throughout the movie: edward ferrars, the most awkward man in england, who becomes more and more awkward as the movie goes on...
