    It's really remarkable to see how much Caesar's speech has developed through the trilogy, he starts out by speaking very little after gaining the ability to speak, then he speaks in simple yet effective sentences, and finally he speaks fluently, as if he's a human adult. Great way of showing not only the development of Caesar, but also how the virus has developed the brains of the apes to remarkable levels.

      Honestly, I think it's even more ambiguous than that. The colonel really didn't have a choice. It was either the apes or humanity, regardless of what the apes did or what the humans did. It was a question of survival.
      He wasn't just a hero in his own mind, he was just doing what any conscious being would do: fighting for survival.

It seemed like the Simian flu did a good job killing people already, it didn't need the colonel's assistance.
      The apes have no incentive to be at war with humans. They just want to live their lives at peace assuming the humans want the same. Killing the apes won't cure the Simian flu either.

    You know what's sad to think about? This is likely the longest and most in-depth conversation Caesar has ever had with a human. What's more the Colonel is fully aware how intelligent the apes are and address Caesar as such rather than dismiss him as a savage or dumb creature (which makes his enslavement of the apes all the more monstrous).

      Sometimes the hardest decisions have to be made and it falls to those who are willing to do what others aren’t to save the species it’s not right but many humans would’ve made the decision that he did especially if they have children you want to survive you want your children to survive if it was the only way there’d be certain things that make you question your morales but it has to be done the enslavement is too far but the genocide if done humanely would’ve been a sin and condemned the souls of many men and women who participated but allowed for their children to rebuild and make their sacrifice worth it

      @Ganto Trusty Humans are apes. Humans, chimps, gorillas, bonobos & orangutan’s all stem from a recent comment ancestor. Humans are very closely related to chimps, because we have the most recent common ancestor compared to other apes. We slowly deviated anatomically because different groups were isolated and went down their own evolutionary paths. A house cat, lynx, Snow leopard and Lion are all cats belonging to the cat family. They’ve simply gone down separate evolutionary paths. Isolation leads to deviation. Like the Romance languages; all derived from Latin, but through isolation of populations Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian etc emerged. They’re different, but have a lot in common, and it’s the same with apes.
      Anyways, evolution has no route. There is no destination. Just random natural selection over millions of years; thus the continuous morphing of all organisms… until, well, who knows? Who’s “Better”? Man or Chimp? Objectively speaking, that’s a delusion of grandeur only us humans could conjure. Read ‘Sapiens’ by Yuval Noah Harari.

Plus, Cesar probably would've allowed some apes to join humans as Guinea pigs for testing on a vaccine for the virus itself. Consider this with small tribes globally, not contacted by colonists in asia, africa and south America. If you think about it deeply, all of the villians from the apes movie, are pretty much created by the past villian. The Hollywood director and Jacobs set the path of hatred and revenge towards humanity for Koba, and in Koba's case, he spread the virus to the human researcher, which in return brought humanity to the brink of extinction, then Koba provoked a war, which pretty much set the path of rivalry and survival for the Colonel. The Colonel way of thinking trascended generations later and set the path of conquest for Proximus Caesar. All of them are the domino effect of fear between humanity and apes.

    This scene really puts into perspective how far Caesar has come and the growth of his character. Not just his speech, but his perspective on life. He went from being no much more than an animal to becoming more human than most humans. He even reaches a point where he calls out a human being and tells them that they’re behaving like an animal. He also understands the value of mercy more than most people do. Humanity took everything from him yet he still shows sympathy when he learns what the virus did to them. But at the same time he’s also emotionally torn by the whole situation especially when speaking with the Colonel. He doesn’t know who to feel sympathetic towards anymore and that not everything is black and white. He’s confused and has reached a gray area and that’s exactly what makes him the most human character in the trilogy.

    I think what I find most interesting about the Colonel is that he doesn’t necessarily hate the apes, but he certainly doesn’t pity them either. He’s just someone who sticks to the mission and doesn’t get emotional over things. He knows the apes are the result of the arrogance of man, and is just trying to rectify it. He is a ruthless, merciless, and extremely cruel human being. So cruel in fact, that Caesar is more human than he is morally and even calls him out on it. But he is loyal to his overall objective which is to save humanity. The scariest part about him I think is that deep down we all know that he was right. The world was in a desperate state and as a result created someone who was to be the tool to balance it. Someone without morals, someone without personal ties, someone who sticks to the mission no matter what. He’s like a machine that has been programmed to accomplish a task by any means necessary. And it’s why nearly everyone became his enemy in the end. He didn’t care what people thought of him or if they hated him. He just cared about the results of his actions. Overall a very simple yet interesting villain!

    The weird thing about the evolved Simian Flu is that we never see it actually rob someone of their higher thinking or do anything more than shred their vocal chords and take away their speech. The soldier in the snow was dying, so it wasn't possible to tell if he had lost his human intelligence. The little girl seemed retain her human intelligence, if not her voice. (Spoiler) The Colonel seemed to lose his intelligence, but considering the empty liquor bottle by his bed, he could've just been drunk or hungover on top of not speaking. If what he said about his son was true, then maybe he really did lose his mind because of the war. Coupled with the loss of his voice, the Colonel and the medic might've just came to the wrong conclusion. Considering that he only said that the medic and his son's caretaker only stopped speaking and didn't mention any devolved behavior, that might just be the case. But when you murder your son on a misdiagnosis, your guilt might not allow you to admit that you were wrong. That's my theory, anyway.

    • @connoromalley4004
      @connoromalley4004 Месяц назад

      That explanation makes sense and definitely elevates the movie. When you first watch the scene, you have this little feeling that maybe the Colonel is right and just doing what has to be done to save the species, but then you see that Nova was able to still communicate with the apes, show compassion, help Caesar get food and water, and help the apes' escape plan, and you realize that no de-evolution actually occurs. Even the other infected people we see (The dying soldiers in the snow) still know what's going on around them. The infected Colonel still has enough mental faculties to drink to deal with the pain, and he's still able to make the decision to end his life at the end. It's most likely that he realizes that the virus doesn't take any development away from the victims, and everything that he did/became/sacrificed was pointless. In the end, after all of his attempts, he was the only one that lost his humanity.

I loved him as a character, but people somehow forget that he is the bane of this entire series. From start to finish. And the humans only sin was covering up their failure at containment. That’s why I think in the end, caesar realized that it was all his fault, and it is wasn’t as simple as saying sorry. Loved the series, but peoples sudden sick love for simians was cringe. how did people never comprehend that the colonel is the hero of the movie for us humans. the danger that is represented by this evolution of the virus is a threat to us that goes beyond are wildest nightmare. It devolves us into primitive beasts without our intellect. we lose everything that makes us human. we lose the capacity to separate ourselves from the night mare that is nature that the rest of life is condemned to. No only this but there is another hominid species now on other that rivals us at our peak. Imagine how they would torture and humiliate us, especially in lieu learning the experiments that we routinely did to our ancestors.
    Stopping this occurence would literally be more important than anything else in our history and its not even close. ANYTHING would be on the table. In my opinion human extinction is preferable to what they colonel is trying to avert.
