“NO”, that no meant everything, he finally had enough of being treated like a pet, enough of being rejected, this moment is iconic, it still gives me chills,
He is the true comrade of the apes
Forget humans love Monke
Long Live Monke 🦍🦧
Finally someone who used “iconic” correctly
I know exactly what to say about him: he started the revolution
And his world will change forever
The most iconic "No" since Neo's in The Matrix
Cornelius from Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1973): "He did not grunt. He articulated. He spoke a word, a word which had been spoken to him time and again without number by humans. He said: 'No'."
It took 38 years to finally show this moment on screen.
I was searching for this comment thank you 🙏 was wondering if anyone realized it.
This scene has its own fanbase.
And dear God did it live up to the hype. Unfortunately I have yet to find an edit that puts Cornelius' speech as voice over with Caesar saying "No" to replace the no in the speech
Well, the original series did show this moment: Milo, who was by then known as Caesar, did in fact say "No!". So we did see it.
But this did it better, hands down
I didn't know about the scene and never watched that, but now that I have seen it, it isn't even the same story. The ape they're talking about was called Aldo, not Caesar, and the story indicates that apes evolved by being pet/slaves to humans for 500 years, then revolting, not due to some pandemic virus.
I remember the first time I saw this. The theater was chuckling from the reference. But the moment Caesar said "NO!" The entire theater went dead silent. Amazing moment.
what reference?
"Get your stinking paw off me you damn dirty ape"
Google it.
That's fucking badass.
To the older ones except that time, it was an ape saying it to a human saying "Get your stinking hands off me you damn dirty human!"
futureblue49 mine too. the only voices were some teens in the front row saying "Oh shit."
You can feel the power behind that "NO!" Not only was that his first word, but that was him finally able to express himself. Express how he was tired of being treated like an animal, a pet, tired of being tazed, tired of living in a cage.
Yeah, it's fitting that the first word spoken by an ape is a defiance to human control
Well said 👍🏾
If you look, at 1:40, as the camera pans around him, his eyes glow extremely bright green for a second, almost showing he's unlocked that next level of intelligence, as the ALZ turns the apes eyes green or bright colours. It's a really awesome detail
I actually think that “No” is one of the best moments in cinema. His first words and the evolution of his intelligence throughout the film. The flip on the original film. The moment is captured so perfectly.
And it a moment of defiance against abuse- how can you not empathize with him? With his kind? That moment was about hope- he became a superhero and a leader for the beaten and the damned.
The writing deserves some serious accolades.
That or Darth Vader saying No in episode 3
@@luisvelez1952 The Darth Vader no was corny and forced imo
Also just the simple direction of the scene. The buildup, Caesar standing up, the "NO" and then just the silence, showing all of the reactions before the music comes back in and we see Caesars dominance. Incredible work Rupert Wyatt.

When the switch flips and the adrenaline kicks in at the same time

Monky Mangler His voice sounds a little demonic after his 3rd one
The fact that even the Gorilla Had a slight fear of Caesar. This scene is one of the most powerfull in Cinema, and one of my all time favourites.
I think he was surprised and trying to say "No" too, you can see it in his mouth.
To them Caesar just became a god to them. Saying words intelligently is an ability only humans can do
@@bboynava1812 i didn't notice
I think Buck was inspired.
I remember when I first saw this movie and the look on bucks face was one of the greatest and most natural cinematic recordings of admiration/fear/awe. In his eyes Caesar became a god.
I think another reason why this scene is so badass is due to that fact that apes are so similar to humans. The biggest thing that separates us from them is speech so seeing an ape shout “NO!” kinda breaks the barrier of us from them so it’s super shocking and surreal.
speech is far from what separates us from them. A bunch of animals can say stuff that they hear us saying. The barrier between humans and animals is the ability to philosophy (if a ape can do sign language it's because he's trying getting a reaction he learned he would get from a human if he did said sign. It doesn't mean the ape knows this sign can mean a whole phrase to us.)
@@AbandonedQuiche many humans are just as barbaric as apes in a sense that they dont care what actions they perform as long as it benefits them. Philosophy isnt a thing only found in humans either. Many animals have a sense of justice, forgiveness, and have high emotional intelligence. What animals truly lack is the ability to exchange their thoughts with others. That’s what’s allowed us to keep on growing and build a civilization. So in a sense, if animals were able to communicate on the same level as humans, they would be on the same par.
Jordan Davis 19 Them breaks of
@@AbandonedQuiche no, apes have used sign language to express their emotion like when koko the gorilla had her kitten hit by a car and the keeper told her, koko signed sad, bad, sad, bad and later could be heard crying. Some people think they only do it for food but they've done it to talk aswell it's just like any other person who was born needing to learn sign language apes are some of the smartest creatures in the world and they communicate with each other all the time they're very social animals they're even learning to use tools in the wild
@@SKIT..CENTRAL I hate to be that person but Koko (as well as other apes) couldn't really use sign language, like not use it as a proper language, I suggest a video on here called "Why Koko (probably) couldn't talk" by Soup Emporium, it goes more in depth.
I absolutely loved the Gorilla's reaction to Caesar saying "No". One of the strongest and most feared animals on the planet, an Alpha of its species, and it was in shock of what Caesar had done.
Well, in the context, Caesar essentially just wielded the power of a god.

Facts
I had the pleasure of watching it in a theater, the crowd went wild.
I think what really makes Caesar saying “no” amazing and jaw dropping is 2 reasons
1.) We are the only animals that can speak, who have a language we can use to communicate and view as us having an intelligent brain, what separates us from the animals in our world. To see that be usurped and even challenged is beyond our imagination.
2.) The word “no”. No is a strong word, it’s a defiant word to a lot of actions we wouldn’t want to do. Caesar saying no symbolized in conjunction with the first reason that no he wont let go, No they are not to be treated horribly, no to being seen as lesser.
It’s an amazing scene and probably the best scene in the entire series
Also, all of Caesar's character development up until this point was essentially one giant dramatic buildup. Then it fizzled with a callback line from the original film to us viewers before it dropped a bomb with a very impactful "NO!".
We are not the only animals that can speak, primates clearly show signs of having dialects in their own languages and so do Orcas
@@govardhanposina17 Orcas have _cultures_ among different ponds. They are the only true rival we have when it comes to intelligence.
Parrots and Macaws can speak, but only mimicking own words for their intelligence
We arent the only animals that can speak.

This movie came out of nowhere. Nobody expected it to be so good but boy, are we happy it was!

That shock wears off quick when he realizes he has the rapt attention of every ape in the prison. He has openly defied their human warden in his own language and defeated him in single combat. He knows that if apes were ever going to break their shackles and rebel, the moment to start must be now, while the air between him and his new followers is sweet with victory and fury. So he rallies them together, inspiring defiance amongst them while holding the symbol of their oppression - ripped from the grasp of their defeated oppressor - in the air for all of them to see.

One thing no ones ever bring taking about this scene is the line: "Take your stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape!" and yes people know thats a line in the first Planet of the Apes movie, but is the idea behind this.....this in the og was the line that George Taylor, says to the apes that shook them, they never heard a Human talk before and they where shock.....now this line is say before Caesar speaks for the first time.....and he does with a NO......now he an APE silence a Human who can't believe an ape talk back to him, is in my opinion one of the best uses of both fanservice and a reversal I have ever seen in any film ever.

This scene was so well placed. I'd go so far as to say one of the best cinematic moments of the decade. They had the audience engaged in an action scene, and built the movie up in such a way that they could completely forget that the apes eventually talk. Then they throw a little reference at us so we all feel a little distracted and then Caesar shouts. All this build up so we wouldn't see it coming from a mile away. Then It happens and they drop all sound so we realize the importance of what we just saw. We get a moment to take it all back then right back into finishing the fight and getting us super hyped and excited for what comes next.
I'm not even fond of the original Planet of the Apes. But this scene hit me like a ton of bricks.

You are not alone
I always admired how Caesar never wanted to kill the humans in this trilogy, rather just break free from their rule. I never saw it as him being weak, but as Caesar actually being the bigger individual. Caesar was a great leader because he kept his eye on the actual goal, which was for his kind to be free from human rule. He only killed when it was absolutely necessary and he always did his best to not make things personal. In Dawn of the Planet of the Apes when Caesar and the other apes rencountered the humans he even tried to make peace with them rather than go to war, because he knew how devastating war could be for both the humans and the apes. A wise leader always searches for peace if it is possible rather than solve problems through violence. Caesar didn’t force the apes to hate the human race, he didn’t ask them to kill every single one of them (like Koba), he just thought about what was best for his kind. Caesar knew in order to be a higher species you must be better than the ones who abused you. I saw the trailer for the 4th movie and I’m so hyped for it! Tho it seems some apes have learned nothing from the humans and are beginning to act just like they did after becoming the dominant species. Hopefully this knew character (who I believe is named Noa) will take after him and follow in his footsteps.
1:28 it was a that moment when the gorilla knew that Cesar was a leader to follow.

It's an awesome moment when even the audience is thinking "Oh, Crap!". Buck's reaction was pretty relatable
They learned to refuse. At first, they just grunted their refusal. But
then, on an historic day, which is commemorated by my species and fully
documented in the sacred scrolls, there came Caesar. He did not grunt.
He articulated. He spoke a word which had been spoken to him time
without number by humans. He said 'No.' So that's how it all started.
- Cornelius, Escape from the Planet of the Apes 1971 (this quote was slightly amended of course)

Just like the entire cinema
This is the scene that showed everyone how badass Ceasar really is
Exactly!
I remember seeing this scene in theaters and the entire room went dead quiet after Caesar spoke
My father will hear about this!!
Han Solo? Isn't he dead?
Get out of here Star Wars
+Ethan Deemer sorry
+DJ WUBBZ I'm talking to klyo ren
+kylo ren My dad told me that when I asked for a PlayStation 4
It's an extremely powerful scene, when I first saw it in the cinema everyone went from commenting and smiling at the reference to the original movie, to total silence when Caesar spoke.
Even to this day hearing Cesar shout out "NO" still gives me chills up my spine. God I love these movies.
Call me crazy but I'm in an addiction recovery program and I call back to this scene sometimes when temptation comes to me. I scream NO at the cage that drugs puts you in. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE WORDS OF CAESAR
Damn straight. I might start doing this too when I'm about to relapse (alcoholism)
Caesar always hated forced references
XD
That's why he put the toy Statue of Liberty down so quick in the earlier scene.
Kyle Campbell very good
Lmao true.
EDUARDO BALBUENA it’s not a reboot
I remember when I was at the cinema and people were chattering and giggling. But the moment Caesar spoke, everyone went silent.
When the teacher gives you homework the first day of school

This whole movie was suspenseful from beginning to end!
That "NO" is when the age of man died, and the age of MONKE begins
They are APE, for devil’s sake.

Caesar spoke the truth with that NO, NO he will not be mistreated or humiliated for being a Monke, NO he will not take this mistreatment anymore and of course NO he will not take his hands of him
Long Live Monke.

On an historic day, there came Caesar. He spoke a word which had been spoken to him time without number by humans. He said, _"No!"_
Glad that I'm not the only one who thought that too XD
amm019 yeah I saw escape from the planet of the apes recently and that scene that Cornelius about the first ape to speak and while he told the story I thought how Caesar said no and how it connected to The originals it just gave me chills
Michael Scruggs cornellius is his son😱
1:25 deadest silent in a cinema i have experienced.
That "NO!" still gives me chills no matter how many times I watch this scene!🥶
Characters with the most legendary "No" in history so far:
1. Darth Vader
2. Caesar
3. Doomguy

I didn't know what to say I just liked the comment that's it
1:30 the one where he smacked dude 😂
RAH!!! 1:30
I feel like second one, apart from being full of anger, is also filled with realization, Ceaser realizing he has the power to stand up from himself and the rest of the apes.
The third one is much more decisive, a statement to all of humanity and his fellow apes, a determined and much sharper "No" to abuse and oppression.
Him saying "No!" was absolutely spine-chilling, but something about the music kicking up and him using the word almost like a rallying cry while holding up the shock baton made this scene hit so much harder. S tier movie by a long shot.
Caesar: "STEP ONE!"
Monke's: "SECURE THE KEYS!"
"Step 8 reznov, freedom !"
@@chino_sosa365 for you, Caesar! Not for me
I laughed too hard at this. But, seeing as you started it...
Caesar: "STEP TWO!"
Monke's: "ASCEND FROM DARKNESS!"

Caesar: "Step 5"

That moment of silence in the theater was pure surprise for us and nobody dared to say a word until Caesar started chanting "no" and then everybody started cheering. Very moving moment.
I remember when I saw this scene in theaters. I was in complete absolute shock. I think this scene shows just how unnatural something like watching an animal speak would actually be if it ever happened to someone. And not only that, but a fully self aware animal too. That is truly terrifying
it's not terrifying, it's beautiful
@@dedshaman6204 whether it's terrifying or beautiful will depend entirely on the circumstances in which the animal learns to speak.
If it's under conditions like what Caesar was subjected to, then it will be terrifying.
But if it's under much better circumstances, our reactions to it might be a fair bit better.
Yes. I see these animals almost daily. It is harrowing.
@dedshaman6204 unless it's actually a skinwalker...💀
Caesar is one of the best characters in all of fiction
When I watched this in theaters, everyone went dead silent, then started cheering, and I swear I heard someone say “Yes, king!”
Lmao at "yes king!"😂😂😂
Honestly, what kind of Movie Theaters do you people go to? At my local Movie Theater everyone just sits quietly but a lot of people seem to go to movie theaters where people act like they're home.
i doubt it, i believe the dead silent part
Loud movie theaters are common on opening night.
He's saying no to cages, no to labs, no to cruelty, no to chains, no to being spit on, no to evil, he's saying no to sin
At that moment he became ALL three...see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil...

I remember somebody said they hated this movie and then when they saw this they started to love it
Fear is a great motivator
I love how the other apes are just like *“HE WIELDS THE STICK OF POWER!!”*
I love Buck the gorilla. Buck's expression comprehending what his new beloved leader just did - awe and wonder.
"Ceaser is home."
Happy 10th Anniversary to Rise of The Planet of The Apes. This film is what started, in my opinion, one of the best trilogies in movie history. Rise, Dawn, and War are all epic masterpieces, but without this first film we wouldn't have the timeless story of Ceasar. The trilogy is also my favorite movie trilogy after LOTR
I think this might be one of the few times I think the reboot/remake is better than the originals. Though I do enjoy the originals as well
