It was a Friday night in August 1987 in an Auckland yacht club (PCC) after an evening Rum Race. A young lass picked up a guitar and started strumming the intro and then started to sing this song. The rowdy bar was immediately silenced and the crowd joined in. After the first chorus, she put down the guitar and the crowd continued to sing 'a capella' in perfect harmony until the end of the song. Everyone there knew all the words, even the key change. It was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life and I will never, ever forget it. Almost a religious experience. RIP Max and Stewey. Thanks for the song and the memories.
Absolutely sad sad song from my youth. The times I lost girlfriends who chose other guys instead of me, because they were smart and flashy. When I meet these girls today, "I can see it written in their eyes". That I was a better choice. A great song that can still bring longing in me of something that is no longer there.
Adore this song, soo many memories of long ago in a mining town in Oz. I just lost the love of my life and still mourn, even today. I cry as I write this and hope Max rests in peace, taken too soon from us. Great talent, amazing times.
@@wendylee1813 Thanks Wendy that was very sweet of you. Yes, you are totally right but we find a way to go on with our lives. I guess to survive at all we to somehow find a way although life will never be quite the same again. XXX

My parents always listened to this song when my mum found out she had cancer. God slowly slipped our strength from us. This is the only song she would listen to.
My Dad played this to my Mum when they were separating, it broke my heart, I was only 14. Mum was seeing someone behind Dads back and Dad knew it. Dad died in 82 I think of a broken heart. I still love my Mum dearly and she told me that she still loved Dad and he was always her best friend. Mum now has dementia and is in a nursing home. I might play this to her see if she remembers it. I know she loved this song too. RIP Max what a fantastic song. Jeremy Downunder
