  • Among Costa Rica’s mountains lives a hidden community: the Bribri Indians.
These indigenous people have always lived in matrilineal clans. Here, it is the women who bear the name of the clan, not the men. And it is also them who are tasked with passing on their cultures.
Xiaomara and her husband Carlos invite us into their home to discover the unique and humbling way of life led by their community.
From the film: “Costa Rica: Those who talk to the stones” - “Connecting Traditions”
    Direction: Alexandre Mostra
Production: Ma Drogue à Moi & Ushuaïa TV

My abuelita and my family had no idea we were descendants from the bribri. Upon taking a test to find answers of who we are, it was documented I myself am 25% Bribri. I am quite proud and happy to say I am more connected to my country than I believed

My grandmother was from costa rica ❤ unfortunately, she was an orphan 😢 and was adopted by Mexicanos and grew up in Guadalajara as a Garcia. She later on married a Gaxiola and traveled to Tijuana, Baja California before eventually making their way into San Diego. I wish I knew who her biological parents names were and more about her past...she unfortunately passed away when I was just a kid. I had no idea she was adopted till talking with my moms one day. I always knew her side of the family were diverse with Gaxiola, Garcia, Martinez, Palomino, and Palos but had no idea our grandmother is a costa rica aborigine 😊.

My husband just found out he is indigenous Costa Rican but he does not know what tribe he comes from I’m hoping maybe this might be the tribe. Does anyone know the haplogroup theBribri Indian people belong to?

My mother is bri bri, my maternal haplogroup is j1c1, did 23 and me and my mother actually has a large amount of European, all of which being Spanish- this makes sense because the Spaniards did come to Costa Rica, giving it the name!
