  • Originally from Ethiopia, coffee arrived in Colombia in the 18th century. Nowadays, the country is the second-biggest producer of coffee.
But what makes its coffee so special?
The answer lies in its tropical climate. To be able to grow coffee plants, Colombian farmers have to cultivate them at high altitudes. There, the cooler air allows the coffee to ripen more slowly. Because of the low night-time temperatures, the coffee beans absorb more sugar through their skin as they ripen. As a result, they taste sweeter in the cup, with notes that can be likened to caramel or vanilla.
