I just had this exact faucet installed. Couldn't help but grin that homes built in the 50s pretty much all had the same style and solid construction. Great video.👌
A friend in the construction business calls it a battleship bathroom! I installed the faucet set around 20 years ago. I had one hell of a time getting the old one out. There is about 2 inches of mortar over metal mesh. The old faucet was in bedded in the mortar.
Know How Now That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?
Excellent video! And I know I sound like a broken record but I learn something new every time I watch your videos! In fact I learned many things that I never knew! Thank you again for doing such a concise and well explained video!!😎💙

@@Know-How-Now I have watched so many videos on how to fix the diverter on how to stop water running from spigot while shower is on, and never heard any of them say make sure the diverter is in on position when installed. I just finished it. And now I have a full running shower to use without water running the other way. That washer was all kinds of shape. Have a wonderful blessed day.
As a woman you've done a tremendous job discussing the anatomical bodies of the shower components. This is what I needed. All these other male plumbers just show you how to plug it in and I did a wrong job. Maybe this will help me get it right. Will keep you updated.
I hope it works out for you. IMHO, understanding the concept of how something works makes the repair easier and better odds that you fix it right on the first try. I've had plenty of failures on the first try. lol.
If you are the original owner, most faucet manufacturers will send you replacement parts for free. The quality of customer service can vary, so far, Moen has been great. The customer service for Price Pfister was not stellar, but it beat paying for the parts.
Very informative. I feel ready for the project. More importantly, you reminded me to check my make ... Price Pfister guarantees their parts. I'd forgotten that!
Best wishes for the project. Last time I checked, the customer service for warranty parts was not top notch, but I did get the parts I needed. If you have to buy them, they are not cheap.

Very helpful video and cool to see how you can rebuild the parts, but I'm curious to know how many people choose that route instead of replacement when a whole new assembly is only about $15.
I just replaced the PP Verve diverter with a non-OEM (Danco found at Hepot)...everything fits perfectly but most of the water does not divert. I installed it with the valve retracted as you mentioned. I don't see any debris/old washer. I removed the showerhead and it improves a bit...maybe 50/50 tub/shower so something is wrong.
Problem solved. Danco makes two different models to replace the Price Pfister Verve. And naturally, the one I needed is well distributed but ACE hardware had a washer repair kit that had the needed washer. The old valve is back in action.
Kudos! This is really well done. Our PP 3-handle shower is so old, I believe it was still all original. When using the shower, there was water coming out of the shower and the tub spout. I figure it’s the diverter. Replaced diverter w/ Danco part 15300B, but now I’m not getting water from shower just the spout. I’ll have to replace the seat as well I think so gotta get a seat wrench. But which position is open versus closed? I thought I followed the vid carefully.
To send water to the shower head the diverter is turned counter clock wise (if you are looking at it from the shower. Are you sure the old washer/oring isn't stuck inside the valve body? Sometimes they stick inside and you have two of them. Also, did you compare the two diverters, maybe you don't have the correct replacement.
@@Know-How-Now Thanks. Yes I had the right replacement part. I did have to remove the old seat. It was totally worn down. Totally happy and relieved. :)
I reinstalled my delta faucet 17730 diverter. First I put it in with the two holes up and only the tub worked. Then I installed it with the two holes down and the tub and shower only work at the same time. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I'm not familiar with that Delta product. A few things.... is it the correct replacement part? If possible, I buy the OEM part. Sometimes aftermarket parts are a problem. If you are not sure how it goes back together, you may try going to Delta's website and look for a parts diagram for you faucet. Delta also may have some sort of tech support.
Before installing it you'll want to turn it so that the end of the valve (the part with the washer on the end) is closest to the part where the handle is attached. If you would measure it from handle to washer, it would be the shortest possible distance.... most compact. I also show it that way while I am explaining. Good question, after rewatching that part I understand that what I am saying may be confusing.
When I turn the shower divert valve water flows great out of the shower but when it’s in the opposite position water barely flows out of the hot or cold lines to the faucet. How could the shower diverter valve cut the flow of water to a trickle to the faucet?
It's hard to say what is going on with the diverter until you remove it. You will have to take it apart to repair anyway. Maybe there is debris clogging something.
I do handyman work, mostly carpentry, electrical, and drywall. One of my customers broke the handle off her diverter in the shower/tub. I unscrewed the valve and took it to the hardware store. They told me it was a Price Fister, 12 harp stem and sold me the correct handle. I went back to her house, screwed the valve back in and attached the new handle. The handle turns the stem in and out just fine but now no water comes out of the shower! What gives? Thanks
Did you compare the new & old diverter... maybe it's not the correct part? Did the old O ring stay in the valve body & now there are two O rings stacked on top of each other?
I replaced my diverter valve and now it doesn’t send water to my shower head. Can it that when I took out my old valve the washer was broken, could the broken piece got stuck where the water goes to my shower head. Cause now it just drips water from my shower head. Thank you 🙏🏽
I have a weird situation. Need to replace the handle on a very old diverter valve. Strange thing is there is no stem, there is simply a hex nut. The plastic handle has a collar that slips over the hex nut and then a center screw tightens the plastic handle onto the hex nut. I've been to several stores and no one is able to get me a replacement handle and apparently have never seen a setup like this. Can you help?
The only comment I have is when using a valve removal wrench it is much easier to place a screw driver through the holes in the wrench and turn it rather than a crescent wrench. It's much more stable.
hello! your video is very helpful but, we have changed the diverter and got a new seat as well, however, the shower head and tub faucet run at the same time when it should only be running on the shower head. can you please help us...we don't know what else to do.
me again...so I watched your video very carefully to check what i was doing wrong and finally I got it to work!! I was missing a ring in to the diverter any way thanks for your video it saved my husband and I!!!
There was no mention of a plastic nipple which goes over the stem and screws into the flange at one end and something that may be called a bonnet (has threads on inside and outside) st yhe other end, unless I missed it.
I am not sure how many gaskets and or washers are supposed to be on my ( I believe 1940's or 1950's) 3 handle diverter. Ive replaced the washer that goes against the seat but when i turn the shower on i have water coming out of the shower and faucet/spigot. Please help I can not figure out what im doing wrong. I believe it's a speakman
I am not familiar with faucets from that era. You might try asking on this plumbing forum... it used to be really good, though Terry Love died last year. Maybe there is an old plumber there that can help. terrylove.com/forums/index.php#google_vignette
Iim not sure why my diverter stem refuses to come out. I'm using a big crescent wrench directly on the nut and turning counter clockwise. It is frozen. Is there a difference between using the faucet wrench versus going directly to the nut with a crescent wrench?
Try spraying some penetrating oil on it, wait about an hour & try again. If it doesn't come loose tap on the connection and treat it again, wait, and try again. I use PB Blaster, it smells horrible, but works good. Don't bother with WD40, it's not the best thing for stuck parts.
It's a 801. I don't know if it's still on the Pfister website. After a while, they remove the info from their website. If you are an original owner, call them. You should be able to get free parts. The warranty service folks are sometimes a little rough, but be nice, you will get what you need.
That's a tough one. You might try making the opening larger. I don't know what kind of material you have to remove, but I've knocked away some mortar with an old screw driver & hammer. Be careful not to damage the valve.
my cold water faucet leaks when I turn it on, what must I do. How do I locate a Price Pfister spare part store in Laguna Niguel, CA 92677 and how can I have the instalation sheet for the this particular three knob unit.
I have a another video that shows how to replace a cartridge or valve stem. See link below. I've also put a link to Price Pfister web site. ruclips.net/video/AoYqsdWODS0/видео.html www.pfisterfaucets.com/parts-support
I don't have the resources to give accurate advise on parts for faucets. I recommend either identifying the faucet and consulting the manufacturer or taking the old part to a plumbing supply house.
The first thing you could try is to replace the diverter. There could be other reasons for that problem. Check out this thread: terrylove.com/forums/index.php?search/48771281/&q=shower+hot+cold+fluctuates+in+temp&o=date&c[node]=6
When I turn on my shower head water flows from tub spout as if I'm filling tub for a bath and the shower head at the same time...? Is it the diverter or the tub spout?
If you turn a diverter knob on the wall (the type in this video) the problem is likely the diverter. Some tub spouts have a knob that you lift, which is also a diverter. You will only have one diverter.
Hi Tommy, I made another video that shows how to replace the stem/cartridge. It does not come to the top of the search. You need to have the valve stem open when installing it. I will put a link to it below. There are over 200 of like quality how to/repair videos, organized by playlist on the channel. If you subscribe (free), you will be able to find all of the videos. ruclips.net/video/AoYqsdWODS0/видео.html
what do you do when the shower socket is slightly larger than the diverter bolt? i've tried hammering the socket to shrink it, putting electrical tape inside of it, tried a dime inside of it to decrease diameter. . .nothing is working :( the socket is 27/32 but i need one that's probably 24-25/32. . .plumber shops are telling me they don't even make them that size.
If you don't mind sacrificing the tool here's my thought. How about putting some "liquid metal" on the inside? www.permatex.com/products/adhesives-and-sealants/specialty-adhesives-removers/permatex-liquid-metal-filler/ Devcon also makes some sort of metal repair product. My brother, a machinist says it's great.
@@Know-How-Now that's a great idea. i ended up going to autozone and picking up a 12-point socket wrench, 13/16 (26/32), and then cutting off part of the stem so that i could get the wrench over the nut and it worked! then i went to plumbers supply store and got the replacement part and magically the 27/32 socket wrench worked . . .god what a nightmare tho!
If you're having trouble removing a seat, you can hammer a flathead screwdriver into it snuggly, then use a wrench or vice grip to turn the screwdriver. Wasted $30 on the stupid tool only to remove a 30-year-old seat this way.
Hello - when I turn on the water to my tub, water flows through the tub spout, however when I turn my diverter handle water does not flow through my shower head. I removed the shower head to see if that was the issue but water did not run out the pipe - it dribbled down (nearly no water) The day before this happened the water pressure was definitely weak. Do I have a clogging issue or is it possibly the diverter? Thank you!!
Are you sure you have the correct part? Compare the old & new one. Also, around 3:40 - did the old O ring come out or is it still stuck in the valve body = double O ring.
@@Know-How-Now thank you for the response. I was able to fix the issue. The old part was the wrong one to begin with. It was a Danco brand and I needed a Pfister.
From a thread discussing a stripped seat. Also, if I have something that is stuck, I treat it with penetrating oil (PB Blaster), wait an hour and try again to loosen it. It might take a few treatments, waits and tries to loosen, but it usually comes free. If you have tried to use a seat removal tool and stripped out the valve seat, it is possible to extract the stripped-out seat using a 'screw extractor' tool, which are available at most auto parts stores. The screw extractors come in different sizes, to fit different sized screws. If you've stripped the head of a screw or bolt, you drill a hole in that bolt and tap in a screw extractor, which has tapered shape and reverse direction aggressive threading. As you turn the extractor it gets tighter and tighter, until the treads move. I was able to buy a #5 size screw extractor for about $6 at the auto store (for a smaller faucet seat). Lowered it into the stuck valve seat, gave it a LIGHT tap to start, and used a socket set to turn it. Worked like a charm!
A plumber came and charged money and then told me to open up the back end in another room to replace the cartridge in the diverter. And the tiles on the wall will need to be torn out to get the job done. Making little sense out of this guy's plan, I found this video. The diverter cartridge is designed to be replaced from the front.
I wish you would do a video on what I'm looking for. I have an old bathtub that has three handles. One controls the HOT, one controls the COLD, and the middle controls the DRAIN. I need to replace the hot and cold and drain values and handles. There are 11 inches between the hot and cold handles and I do NOT need a spout. There is a spout that comes out of the tub. There doesn't seem to any reason to replace that BUT if I can't buy what I need without a spout, I'll buy it! I can't seem to find what I need. Help! Can someone on here tell me what this unit is called and how do I find one that is not attached to a shower.
If you don't know the make, take some pictures of it. Go to a plumbing supply house, they may be able to help with the parts or refer you to an an older plumber who is familiar with your set up.
It depends. You may have shut off valves to isolate the fixture from the rest of the plumbing. If you live in a building with multiple units, there may be a shut off just below the valves at the shower (oval shaped coverings at the shower valves) .
I saw that after I posted the video... too late to fix it. I'm not perfect and do make mistakes. If nothing goes wrong you probably aren't doing anything. lol.
You know what's missing from your video that's in all the other videos made by male fixit personalities? Male enchantment with their own personality. Yours has none. Just the facts, ma'am. This was wonderfully thorough and helpful, thank you.

hello! your video is very helpful but, we have changed the diverter and got a new seat as well, however, the shower head and tub faucet run at the same time when it should only be running on the shower head. can you please help us...we don't know what else to do.
me again...so I watched your video very carefully to check what i was doing wrong and finally I got it to work!! I was missing a ring in to the diverter any way thanks for your video it saved my husband and I!!!
Hi Karen, way to go on figuring out the problem. Have a great day.
@@Know-How-Now Thank you. I greatly appreciate the quick reply and advice.
What model is the one you working on I have one just like that and thank you
It's a 801. I don't know if it's still on the Pfister website. After a while, they remove the info from their website. If you are an original owner, call them. You should be able to get free parts. The warranty service folks are sometimes a little rough, but be nice, you will get what you need.
What do you fo if the hole is too small to fit the shower faucet wrench around the part that needs to be removed?
That's a tough one. You might try making the opening larger. I don't know what kind of material you have to remove, but I've knocked away some mortar with an old screw driver & hammer. Be careful not to damage the valve.
my cold water faucet leaks when I turn it on, what must I do. How do I locate a Price Pfister spare part store in Laguna Niguel, CA 92677 and how can I have the instalation sheet for the this particular three knob unit.
I have a another video that shows how to replace a cartridge or valve stem. See link below. I've also put a link to Price Pfister web site.

great video, my old one show W 17, what size is that? the ones I can find on store is W 12 or W 8. having problem finding W 17. thanks for the help.
I don't have the resources to give accurate advise on parts for faucets. I recommend either identifying the faucet and consulting the manufacturer or taking the old part to a plumbing supply house.
How to repair packing material on shower diverter
I have a video on how to rebuild a valve... it's similar to a diverter. This might help. ruclips.net/video/g8ORORWGsWw/видео.htmlsi=C76Eb34lz7HeXZqe
Hi. I have similar 3 handle shower and water temperature constantly fluctuates. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?
Thanks
The first thing you could try is to replace the diverter. There could be other reasons for that problem. Check out this thread: terrylove.com/forums/index.php?search/48771281/&q=shower+hot+cold+fluctuates+in+temp&o=date&c[node]=6
What if the plastic cap is wedged inside the pipe
When I turn on my shower head water flows from tub spout as if I'm filling tub for a bath and the shower head at the same time...? Is it the diverter or the tub spout?
If you turn a diverter knob on the wall (the type in this video) the problem is likely the diverter. Some tub spouts have a knob that you lift, which is also a diverter. You will only have one diverter.
When replacing the hot or cold cartridges, which way do you have the faucet part turned, far to the right or far to the left? Thanks
I mean the valve stems of course, full open or closed when installing them
Hi Tommy, I made another video that shows how to replace the stem/cartridge. It does not come to the top of the search. You need to have the valve stem open when installing it. I will put a link to it below. There are over 200 of like quality how to/repair videos, organized by playlist on the channel. If you subscribe (free), you will be able to find all of the videos. ruclips.net/video/AoYqsdWODS0/видео.html
what do you do when the shower socket is slightly larger than the diverter bolt? i've tried hammering the socket to shrink it, putting electrical tape inside of it, tried a dime inside of it to decrease diameter. . .nothing is working :(
the socket is 27/32 but i need one that's probably 24-25/32. . .plumber shops are telling me they don't even make them that size.
I hate when something that should take a couple of hours takes a couple of days. Good to hear you figured out a solution.
I removed the shower head to see if that was the issue but water did not run out the pipe - it dribbled down (nearly no water)
The day before this happened the water pressure was definitely weak. Do I have a clogging issue or is it possibly the diverter?
Thank you!!
Hi Joseph, it sounds like it's the diverter. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart.
Hi I got the same problem where you able to fix it? Can you tell me how?
Plus add plumbers grease on the handles thread and splines !!
Great tip, thanks for the contribution.
Please help. I replaced the diverter with a new one but water continues to flow from the tub spout and the shower head at the same time.
Good job on figuring it out. Thanks for sharing, it may help someone else. If possible, I always get the OEM part for any repair.
Thanks for the video! What was the model number of your stem?
I don't recall the part number. You can find parts for you faucet at Pfister's website: www.pfisterfaucets.com/parts-support
How would on remove a striped seat?
Thank goodness you did some critical thinking about the plumber's plan.
I meant to say the handle is a H broach, not 12 harp. Thanks
Do you have to turn off the water at the main to replace this?
It depends. You may have shut off valves to isolate the fixture from the rest of the plumbing. If you live in a building with multiple units, there may be a shut off just below the valves at the shower (oval shaped coverings at the shower valves) .
what is the size of the socket wrench you use
The wrench used was a husky combo 29/32 & 31/32
My tub doesn't even have an overflow. 1925. Can't even beat the stem part into shape.
"Visible" is misspelled as "visable"
I saw that after I posted the video... too late to fix it. I'm not perfect and do make mistakes. If nothing goes wrong you probably aren't doing anything. lol.
You know what's missing from your video that's in all the other videos made by male fixit personalities? Male enchantment with their own personality. Yours has none. Just the facts, ma'am. This was wonderfully thorough and helpful, thank you.
You might want to brush up on your social skills David. I am getting out the popcorn to eat while I am reading the replies to your comment.
Worter lol jk great video.
Yep, we have worter here in south eastern PA. lol.
