- Here I’m reviewing the Brother Inkjet Printer, model number DCP-J1200W. I received this printer for free in exchange for an honest review. This review contains photo stills along with video of the product.
For a relatively basic inkjet, I was very impressed with the quality of photo prints it produces, certainly the best I've had from anything in this price bracket.
For context, I live with my wife and 3 of my 4 daughters - ages 12 to 20. I work from home, as does my wife. Between our wife, personal matters and my daughter’s school and university work we get through a lot of printing, scanning and copying.
First impressions of this compact printer are very good. It takes up as little space as you could expect a printer too that incorporates a flat bed scanner, with a footprint that's not much larger than A4 paper. It’s around 44cm wide, 36cm deep and 16cm tall.
The original ink cartridges hold a lot of ink and are very easy to install - open a small door and push them in to slots. The only downside is that I haven’t found many shops selling replacement cartridges.
It was easy to connect the printer to my network using the Brother Mobile Connect app on my phone, and equally easy to download the drivers and software to set it up on my PC. I'm really pleased that it still has a port for direct USB cable connection to a PC - just in case you have wireless network issues. I'm pleased to report that I've been using the printer wirelessly for 2 months and never lost connection or not found the printer from any device I've used.
Loading paper is very simple - pull out the central tray, add your paper and push the green markers to the edge of the paper. It was very easy to use for photo printing too. The tray takes 6x4 photo paper in either portrait or landscape.
The tray has a double fold out part to hold your printing safe so it doesn’t fly off your desk.
This test page of a mix of text and a colour photo in normal print mode took around 16 seconds from pressing the print button on my PC to printing completed, using a wireless connection.
In 'Eco mode', the same page printed a few seconds faster at 12 seconds. Eco mode prints are considerably fainter than normal mode it's one to be used for text only I think - ideal for saving ink when you just need to print something out for informal personal use.
The 'best' mode took (1 minute 46 seconds! - over 6 times longer than normal mode. The text was notably bolder and shaper than normal mode but I'd be happy with the normal mode text in almost all circumstances.
The colour photo is impressively good in normal mode, but even richer and more detailed in best mode - definitely a mode to use for photo or poster printing. The best mode was the only mode where you could notice any difference in 2 shades of blue I'd used, so clearly a mode where that eye for detail matters - but you really pay for it in printing speed.
Printing from a phone is really easy, either via the Brother Mobile Connect app or another compatible app (I tried a third party app I like and it works perfectly). Scanning is excellent. It's quick and accurate. The photocopy function is equally very good.
Overall, this is an excellent inkjet printer and I’d recommend it for busy homes.
