- The 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot was a Scottish infantry regiment in the British Army also known as the Black Watch. Originally titled Crawford's Highlanders or the Highland Regiment (mustered 1739) and numbered 43rd in the line, in 1748, on the disbanding of Oglethorpe's Regiment of Foot, they were renumbered 42nd, and in 1751 formally titled the 42nd (Highland) Regiment of Foot.
The 42nd Regiment was one of the first three Highland Regiments to fight in North America. The unit was honoured with the name Royal Highland Regiment in 1758. Its informal name Black Watch became official in 1861. In 1881, the regiment was amalgamated with 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of Foot under the Childers Reforms into The Royal Highland Regiment (The Black Watch), being officially redesignated The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) in 1931.
In 2006, the Black Watch became part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and are now officially the 3rd Battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
This footage was taken during a series of homecoming parades after a Tour of Duty in The Middle East.

I love it when the old veterans turn out and exchange salutes with the current members of the regiment.
Yeah that was a great surprise
The old and bold! They led the way!
@JimRamsayJWR way the british army there will be regiments in name only confined to history
Yes

Im a Yank, Retired US Army Infantryman. I just did my ancestry. My 7th Great Grandfather served in the 42nd during the American revolution. Fast forward to 2004 my infantry Battalion relieved the Black Watch in Iraq.
I appreciate your service. Thank you! 🇺🇸
Wha saw the 42nd ? You did. Thank you for your service m8
You can’t beat the sound of the pipes and drums
Not when you go in to battle, that's for sure.
@@mercian7 that depends on which side your on
Gaunt's ghost moment
Especially when being played by a real Scotish regiment
Am I right in thinking they played the pipes landing on the beach at D Day?
Midwestern Yank here. Enjoy watching the flourishes of the tenor drummer. So casual yet precise.
Yes, we have a strong marching band tradition in the Midwest!!!
It’s spine tingling 👌
Every sentence.... same here.
Succinctly stated and spot on friend.
Absolutely heart warming - Never let anyone change the CUSTOMS OF THE British Isles: ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, WALES AND IRELAND
Im Canadian but my parents are from Glasgow and the pipes speak to my soul. This is a Scottish regiment so have the respect to post the flag of Scotland.♥️🏴🇨🇦
Can never get enough of watching these young men they're absolutely wonderful the pipers and drummers are awesome God bless them all
I do miss the Homecoming parades!
Awesome
Hearing those pipes and drums unlocks something deep inside me. Just look how people respond when this happens. They hearken to something important outside of the day to day normal life. God bless the troops.
A Scot can hear the sound of bagpipes being carried on the wind.
@@irene3196Bagpipes originated in Germany.
My dad Andrew Walter Jamieson played drums for Pink Floyd, so I sort of know what I'm talking about.
My dad, Andrew Walter Jamieson played drums for Pink Floyd and bagpipes originated in Germany, I know what I'm talking about.
@@irene3196 Sorry to burst you romantic little nonsensical bubble there mate but so can anyone else with Eardrumi Intactus.
@@DarrenJamiesonJamieson The first description of bagpipes is from Egypt c40BC. There are depictions of what could be bagpipes from what is now Turkey c1000BC but apparently arguments could be made they are not bagpipes. My Dad was an artilleryman and he shelled half of Egypt and would have done the same to Turkey had he been told to - I know what I'm talking about. Well, I don't really but it's not more ridiculous than what you said and I knew where to go to get the info required to back up my statement.
An italian here. Congratulations to these soldiers, these pipes and drums.
My Great Great Grandfather, John Mackenzie, enlisted during the Crimean War and served 21 years with the Cameron Highlanders. He then served a further 20 years as Quartermaster Sergeant of the 3rd Battalion of the Black Watch. Distinguished Conduct Medal and campaign medals for the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny and the North West Frontier of India, as well as LSGC.
A stirring marching tune for a famed and historic regiment…evoking its long battle honors through many wars. Magnificent and inspiring.
Salute from Canada 🇨🇦!!!!
Legendary regiment, fantastic tradition!
Yeah, real legends. The countless people they abused and whose homes they smashed up, will tell you how legendary they are.
In the north of Ireland.
My late father served in the British army and now my family and I are living in fear because we are Jewish….❤️🇬🇧❤️ bless the forces!!! We need to see more of this on our streets!!
Praying for you, the Jewish people and Israel. Am Yisrael Chai 🇮🇱
May you be blessed with a future free from fear. My best wishes to you.
Plenty of good, decent folk here my friend, so live in peace.
I’m Buddhist. But my feelings and support are for the Jewish people and Israel in these dark days. May your G_D bless you and your family and people. 🙏🏼 ☸️ 🇮🇱
We Jews in the US are also living in fear. Anti Semitic incidents have risen 115%. G-d knows what will happen if Donald Trump goes back to the White House
The music comes from very deep of their history . Great to listen and watch .
Damn impressive. Makes me sit and stand up straighter.
The Black Watch 3 SCOTS P&D are quality
Couldn’t agree more
As a Former service member of the Finnish Border Patrol Units)I'd estimate the British Army & Navy being one of the very best in the world .God Bless Your Great Country and Nation, Greetings from Finand❤

Thanks Bernadette - great stuff!
Music to my ears!! Thank you for this! Lord look after these lads!
Brought a tear of pride to my face❤
As it should.
Absolutely beautiful, greetings from Australia 🇦🇺, love the pipes and drums. Parades don't get any better than that.
Seeing these soldiers from different eras passing by and acknowledging each other stirs the soul that much the soul starts to cry. Truly touching.
the police and politicians are afraid of being filmed but our boys can walk proudly walk among the people. well done lads welcome home x
The Scots have always been fighters and the backbone of the British Army and long may it continue 😎🇬🇧👍
My Grandfather served with the Black Watch Regiment during WWII he was so proud to be a member of it.. Respect.
The first american Canadian special service unit during ww 2 used bag pipes as well. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day
Thanks for that info!
The music is stellar, and it is so nice to see so many trim young people.
Blackwatch. Fearsome individuals feared by many nations. It’s a tribal thing that many bigger armies have not conquered.
Marvellous! May sounds and sights like this forever grace our four nations, which constitute Great Britain.
My Pop was a veteran of Korea, the Cyprus uprising, and one or two other skirmishes. He raised me to have respect for others and the importance to keep this land safe by fighting any who seek to usurp us. Lord alone knows what he must be thinking now when he looks down upon us....
I never tire of this.
A very proud ex serviceman and its great to see my band of brothers marching with pride.
Sung to this tune, "Wha' saw the tattie howkers?" (Who saw the potato diggers?)

Who saw the potato diggers?
Sailing down the Broomielaw? (Quay on the river Clyde in Glasgow, usually used by passenger vessels (55.857712N, -4.26275E))

Some of them had none at all,
Some of them had umbrellas,
Just to keep the rain away. (Glasgow superstition that, if you take an umbrella with you it will stay dry all day)
Thank you for this.
I forgot about those lyrics. Just saw some re: the ones to the Bridge On The River Kwai, now each time I watch that movie those lyrics will be in my head.
Tattie howkers going on their working holidays "doon eh water"
@@carnage77 In the vernacular the term is more like "doon ra wattar".
Many were from Co.Donegal.
I love the Scottish bag pipes They are heartwarming. May they be a beacon of light and goodness always. UK G d save the King and bless the memory of our late Queen Elizabeth ll ❤
This is the fittest pipe band I have ever seen. Pipe Major must be big into PT!
Nothing like the fire and energy of the drum corps in a Scottish band!
I love the sound of the Pipes and Drums…can you just imagine being piped into battle? It would give your courage.
I account 'The Black Bear' as the best tune for infantry advance and attack.
Love this , 😀 Proud of our armed forces, love the little Mascot as well Brilliant 👏
Always so impressive the Black Watch! A french fan 😉👍👍
Let The firendship between France and Scotland will go on ever and ever!
The Scots hate the french just as much as the english. It was scotland who defeated Napileon.

Be interesting to see how many know what that is. I know.@@raoulduke344
This regiment would of been against France Philippe .

I absolutely love the pipes, my ancestory
How wonderful, what pride they have and are obviously held in great affection. Marvellous.
Wow. Loved watching this. I am American and
there are 4:00 Scotch and Irish heritage on my Mom's side of the family.
Guess that is why I like these videos.
I read this was when the men came home from overseas duty.
God Bless you all.
Scotch is a drink..it is Scots
Should you ever want to rub a Scottish person the wrong way, call them Scotch.
@@shkeen57 Oops. Sorry. Meant no offence. Never too old to learn. I appreciate the correction as life is an ongoing journey of obtaining knowledge!

prowed member of the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment of Canada since 03.
so glad to see my elder siblings again.
miss you all dearly ❤
once on the Watch alwase on the Watch.
I am a proud Englishman, but I am sure I read somewhere that they were decommissioning the Black watch ....I remember thinking what a total disgrace it was....one of the most feared and proud fighting regiments of all time.
Always great to hear the bag pipes of any Scotish, Gookha and Irish regiment
It's "Gurkha". And BTW, the Gurkhas were the only nation that the British could not defeat in battle. So the British, impressed with their fighting abilities, asked them to become allies - and +200yrs later the Gurkhas still are!! Bravest of the brave!! 👍
@tim7052 thanks. There are several different spellings for Gurkha Regiments particularly the Infantry Regiments
@timcubison9832 Yes, but the spelling I've used is that preferred by British Army Gurkha regiments for the past 100yrs - as opposed to the spelling used by the Indian Army. BTW, India continues to wrongly claim that the sovereign nation of Nepal (and all Nepalis) are Indian!! Furthermore, the Indian Army apes British Army policy, by only allowing Indian officers to command Gurkha (or "Goorka" - using current Indian Army terminology) formations.
@tim7052 You may be interested in reading the Ospery book (elite series 49) The Gukhas which gives a very interesting study of the Gurkha Brigade as it became since 1947. One of my brother in laws had the privilege of being a company commander in 2nd Btn 2nd Gurkhas in Hong Kong I believe in the 1980's which was by far his most enjoyable time in the army. Ayo Gurkhali
@timcubison9832 No need. I know quite enough about them. You see, my Dad was a Gurkha officer at Kohima (and I still have his service Kukhri). 👍
As I said many times, these are serviing soldiers etc, who protect us, God bless❤😊
As an Englishman with Scots Grand parents these Soldiers have done it many times.
I too am the grandson of a scotsman (Jamie Jamieson), and our troops used to fight wars to defend our (not foreign), women and children which was part of our brutal past?
The sound of those snare type drums has always made me want to be in a band like these fellas, cracking out those wicked snare drum riffs. The sound of those drums is absolutely wicked
Magnificent!
I loved listening and watching these warriors. The pipes were just the frosting on the cake. God bless them. An admiring Scots/Irish/Welsh American.
HOW COULD ANY ONE PERSON/ opposing group or - …Just who/ WHOM - Would dare interfere/stop this Beautifully sequenced of exquisiteness??? Only a LUNATIC ARSE FOOL/DOPE’s! Naturally, it aint/wouldn’t be me babe.❤❤❤KEEP EM coming as usual.
What ?
@irene3196
NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT. Motto of the Black Watch. (No one opposes me with impunity.)
Sometimes rendered into Scots dialect as, 'Wha daur meddle wi me?' (Who dares to interfere with me?)
This will always be a reminder of home to me. A kinder, gentler time and I was born and raised in the USA as were my great, great, great, great, great grandparents.❤
This is beautiful. To see the men in such order playing the bagpipes and drums. It’s such a display. They’re showing us that they’re here for us and will put the fear of god into our enemies. ❤
I played the Bugle in the Royal green jackets band as a cadet at 15 in 1982 I was a natural at it. I still love military bands now it s some how ingrained in me. I never jouned the regulars I chose to rebel 😢. My grandad was a decorated US soldier and was involved with d day landings. Whilst delivering beer kegs to Aldershot last week my truck got caught up in the Irish guards parade band, Irish wolf hound all in full regalia, it was a joy to be held up for about half hour, so smart and well drilled it made my day!!! ❤
The pipes never get old, love to hear them...
As many times I've seen videos like this, It's still impressive, right down to the mascot.
Brought tears to my eyes. Remembering the old days
It makes your blood sing 🎶
I just LOVE it! So beautiful!
There is absolutely NOTHING that makes a soldiers chest heave with pride than when he hears the sound of the bagpipes and the steady drumbeat.
Amazing the effects those notes have
Just a excellent video of pipes and drums 🏴 🎶💯🎵👍
Love it❤! Bring back old traditions!
Wow... the enthusiasm and applause of the audience is deafening. :(
The song is Wha Ha the forty-twa. Respectfully, I have a different origin story. The Black Watch was a group of Scots who patrolled the border between Scotland and England. Their job was to apprehend the reavers, aka rustlers, who were returning from their raids. It was composed of of Frasiers and Lindsays, aka the Frasier/Lindsay company. After the Battle of Culloden, the only way a Scot could carry a weapon was to serve in the British Army. Then it was renamed the Crawford Highlander Regiment. Crawford is a region of Scotland that was ruled by the Earl of Lindsay. In 1751 they were renamed the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment because of their heroic conduct at Fort Ticonderoga, formerly named Fort Carillon by the French.
Correction; English army and they were and still are used as cannon fodder.
Love the bagpipes....they give me goosebumps
Good to hear this tune.
You just have to hear the pipes (plural) and you want to tear the heid aff His Majesty’s enemies.
The pipes and drums are truly music for the soul ❤
Saw the whole band, brass and pipes at the Fabulous Forum in L.A. 1976. It was such a great experience.
Fantastic sound and music 🎶 never to be forgotten playing live 😊😊👍👍🎶🎶
So brave and proud. Long may culture and identity prevail. Quite moving watching that and Im 🇨🇦 We must keep traditions alive and flourishing.

I hope so.
Makes me proud just to see it. Well done Scotland.
Sends chills down the spine.
Some very respectable marching and playing. It's not always easy through town centre streets but they kept it tight and crisp.
Love the pipes and drums and the parades
Love the sounds of the snare drum on their own, resonating off the buildings
What a lovely sight to see something we Brits need to see so makes you proud to be British as a lot of the stuff we hear nowadays tells us that being a white. Brit is Racist.
