Thanks for covering this. Very shameful part of our history. I was 6 years old and still remember some of the terror of those days. These are few of the things I remember:
    1. Rumors from neighbors in the afternoon that Indira Gandhi was shot, but only 3 bullets and that too in the leg. Ladies in the neighborhood in Delhi crying but no mention of Sikhs
    2. My father returning back much later than his usual time with a newspaper in hand saying Indira Gandhi is dead (he saw it on a “running news board atop some building)
    3. With DTC buses stopped on route along Ring Road due to massive traffic jams, he had to walk many kilometers and stopped in front of AIMS as were thousands of other people. He said at that time he actually saw Rajiv Gandhi outside of AIMS, along with Jagdish Tytler saying to the gathered crowd “Maaro…Sardaaron Ko Maaron”
    4. There were taxi stands that had mostly Sikh drivers near our home in RK Puram and we saw flames and smoke rising in the air from our terrace where the taxi stand was
    5. All the men in our neighborhood used to stay up at night armed with rods, sticks, cricket bats, hockey sticks, etc. as there were rumors that’s Sikh mobs were attacking Hindu neighborhoods
    6. There was a Sikh family near our home and the community people visiting their home and were told by the adults not to fear and no harm will come to them.
    7. Lastly, after those dark days, the most shameful memory is going back to school after a few days/ weeks to see many of our Sikh classmates either still not present (for many days after) and the look of fear and sadness in those who did return
Never again must we allow those days to return again in India

A tragic event in our country, and hope those times never ever have to come back, although when Godhra happened, I felt my god we are back to those days.
That is why flaming fumes of religious, ethnic or any such flames in India is highly highly dangerous - This is not about BJP, Congress or any other party, petty politics etc, its about people and social fabric of India and the delicate balance that has been required to keep this massive land mass of people and cultures and religions together for 80 odd years, even with all the third world incapability and mistakes that come with it. Thanks SG for bringing this episode, I was in Delhi 13 year boy at that time, staying in Hauz Khas very near to AIMMS, I can recollect that day very vividly, off course Hauz Khas was peacful and we had curfew imposed, but atmosphere was tense. Thankfully Army stepped in and violence in Delhi was stopped in a day - Nov1/2nd.
My head falls in shame due to Delhi violence
Long and short, never ever never ever mix Religion with Politics. It caused partition, it created separatist movement in Punjab which led to Operation Blue star which further led to assinationation of Smt Indira Gandhi and finally which led to Delhi violence.
Violence begets violence, peace is progress,. but as Stalin had once said religion is opium of people and people can be injected with this opium, a nation could be created by Jinnah using this opium.
India is sitting on Tinder box of caste, religion, gender all the time and it is iincumbent upon the wise people to step in and prevent any flare ups and prevent another 1947.
Thanks SG for bringing this episode, we must all learn from history and prevent reocuurence,

The military did open fire when a mob tried attacking Air Marshal Dilbagh Singh's official residence as I recall. More than fifty wannabe murderers were killed in the army firing. And, Lalit Maken - Shankar Dayal Sharma's son in law was widely believed to have organized mobs from the labor unions that he led to participate in the massacres. A PUCL report even named Maken as complicit, something that was "forgiven" in the public memory, I guess, after his assassination and his father in law's elevation to President. I do not believe that Shekhar Gupta is unaware of these facts - try and hide as he might from speaking the truth about the mass-murder of Sikhs by merely claiming that books have been written and documentaries made about 1984. And, it is this dishonesty that prevents many from subscribing to The Print.

The textbook definition of genocide is - "the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group."
I fail to see how the killings then are not described as such.
If Bhindranwale's killings are called the rampage of a terrorist; is it not worse when the government, the instruments of government (the police in this instance), the ruling political party and local goons engage in similar killings?
I fail to see how one party is better than the other. In fact, blame falls heavier on the heads of those who claim to have legitimate state power.
My assessment of the matter is the GOI will conduct an exhaustive and full inquiry only once all the responsible protagonists of the genocide are dead.

Indeed Saddest part of post independence history of India - sad was saga of bhindranwaley nurtured by Indira's Intel Core & who eventually turned Frankenstein, saddest was desecration of golden temple by khalistanis as well as inevitable military action by Indira once the situation flared, sad was inevitable ( she knew it herself, expounded upon it during her last days in interviews and public meetings ) assassination of PM Indira Gandhi and then gruesome massacre of innocent members of our Sikh community by Congress goons across the country, for which almost no justice was delivered and the lack of closure gives a sound basis for extremist forces in our Sikh community to fuel separatism fires. Hopefully time will heal these wounds. And India and all Indians flourish in an air of righteousness, justice, peace and fraternity. Jai Hind. At this time, I was working in a company on the outskirts of Bangalore. The information of this horrible riot was fully suppressed in the print media which was the only source of information during those days. I learnt of the riots from a pair of truck driver and cleaner who delivered a truck load of goods. They were evidently Sikhs, but had badly cut hair and beard. Upon repeated questioning, the pair told me of the massacre up north, especially in Delhi, and that they had no choice but to disguise themselves by shedding hairs.
Rajiv Gandhi condoned this massacre with his infamous statement: “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes.”

I was not yet a teenager at that time and living in Delhi. I was on my school's hockey field with a few classmates, one of whom was listening to the radio (I think he was listening to cricket commentary, if I'm not mistaken). When we returned to our classroom we were told that the rest of the school day had been called off early and that all students were to go back home. My school bus route was along the Ring Road and as we passed through AIIMS crossing (at that time there was no flyover there) we saw a massive crowd outside the hospital.
The arson and violence started that same evening. We saw a mob walk past our house. Fortunately, they did not see my grandfather (a Sikh)'s name written at our gate (or maybe they didn't know English). We were lucky. Later that night, from my house I could see something burning in the distance; later I came to know that it was a bus which had been set on fire. I don't know if anyone was killed or injured in that incident.
So we removed my grandfather's nameplate from the gate and for the next few days kept our living room and bedroom lights switched off in the evenings to make it appear as if no one lived in the house. I don't remember much else except that there was a 24-hour curfew imposed (not sure from which date). Don't know how my parents managed to buy food during those days.
When school reopened, I remember seeing a few Sikh boys (who used to wear patkas) now with short hair.
Those were terrible days, as were the years of terrorism in Punjab that followed.

    2. Create a national memorial at a prominent site in Delhi where every person who died either Hindu and Muslim his name should be inscribed and on the day of remembrance there should be a shanti Jyoti light up there
    3. Acknowledge the perpetrators were never punished and have the families compensate or at the minimum try and prosecute the perpetrators
