In 1984, I joined DD as a cameraman and had just finished training at FTII, Pune. I was posted to Jalandhar (which I considered a death warrant!) in May of that year. I sat at the Mandi House and told them there is no way I am going to Jalandhar and would rather resign. DD was desperately looking for trained cameramen and I had already worked for a year in Srinagar on a contract basis. They didn't want to lose one and my posting was changed to Nagpur. All the events you are quoting are still fresh in my mind as I am an avid follower of news and current affairs.

Waiting for tomorrow's episode! I hope it also covers what happened in Punjab post 1984. It may not be newsiest but decade that followed 1984 was even worse than Bhindranwale era, specially for people of Punjab.

A most gripping narration of the events of a most newsiest year. So many seemingly unconnected stories woven beautifully in common thread of the year. Bore and caliber, trajectory and direct mode, woven into a pun by Gen Sunderji. Very little about Siachen though. I wish there is some story telling on travails of soldiers in the glacier too. Oh dear SG, on that bad day, at 6 pm, I was traveling from Udyog Bhawan to Saket. At Safdarjung Dome, 10 hooligans with iron rods boarded the DTC bus and started thrashing sardarji the sitting next to me at rear end. I could shout at them and blocked the mishap, only for few minutes. Later when the bus crossed the DGCA flyover, I saw many sardars were chased in the middle of the road below. I could see many blood pool on the road. Next day at 8:30 am from Saket to SN depot, I saw all ruins and charred vehicles on the road. I am the mute witness to all such bad history in the Capital, at the age 24. I know how it's painful to you too as a young reporter. Memories are not at all sweet.
SG, thank you for sharing such anecdotes. Most of us who are born in late 90s and 2000s have very little idea about the prevailing climate and the atrocities Congress party has done in India.

I think you should do something similar to the CTC episodes you rerun. Every time i see those reruns,i feel disappointed because in the first place, i remember them from before and secondly, since then and the rerun,time would ha e elapsed, leaving scope for some updates. 1984 was also the year Mrs Gandhi dismissed the Sikkim govt, Farook Abdullah govt and also the NTR govt which after a month she was forced to reinstate. Also the year when PT Usha lost the Olympic medal by a whisker.
I can't understand why the Sikhs thought that Army had desecrated the temple and not Bhindranwale. I am South Indian, if extremists took over the great temples in TN and used it as a base for terrorism I would welcome the Army to flush them out. Hell, even the Kaaba was stormed by the Saudis. Please enlighten me on this.

I never understood the concept of an wave election, where people forget everything and vote for their leader! This is not healthy for any democracy- votes should be given on local and urgent issues, not based on emotion!
Good nostalgic reporting.I was studying in grade 12 and reading In my India today with limited English knowledge.1984 is really scary year especially in first week of November even though I am far from Delhi in small town of Gujarat.

Shekhar Gupta is a great (true) story teller. Not many Indian journalists are so well gifted and so well trusted. I am sure that all the people mentioned in today's episode would be very amused watching it. But for such detailed narrations, common people like us viewers will never know how professional the officers in our Armed Forces, Intelligence establishments and CRPF are. SG's recollection of that day in Police Station in Amritsar is really out of a Salim-Javed script. If his bluff had not worked, I don't know what would have happened to him and to Brahma Chellaney. Eagerly looking forward to the next episode.

Good thing about Indian Kashmir is that their culture is still preserved… In AJK and Gilgit Baltistan… there are no Kashmiri speaking people even left there … in their 1991 census 60-70k people spoke Kashmiri , in 2001 census only 2-3k spoke Kashmiri

I read a book written by General Sunderji. It described his experience in Africa. To understand the true scene in disturbed places in Africa where Sunderji was posted, I found it very interesting. It described escape of a war criminal by paying small bribe

I read a book written by General Sunderji. It described his experience in Africa. To understand the true scene in disturbed places in Africa where Sunderji was posted, I found it very interesting. It described escape of a war criminal by paying small bribe
I guess when Orwell wrote his monumental book 1984 (in which he imagined a surreal vision of humanity held captive by totalitarian superpowers), he had ZERO idea that 1984 would be a barely eventful year, except the LA Olympics boycott by the Eastern Bloc, and the violent and tumultuous times in India, the world's largest democracy.

As an eye witness and journalist who watched first hand the events of 1984 do you think that the bombing of Air India Flight 182 on 23 June 1985 was directly related to the terrible events of 1984 or can it be seen as an isolated event apart from Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Ms Indira Gandhi and the subsequent Sikh riots?
