- No, that’s not a face-hugger from the Alien films you see on your screen, but it sure is bizarre! Our team was stumped when we encountered this mysterious gelatinous creature while diving on a previously unexplored guyot north-northwest of Kingman Reef. One of our experts initially guessed it could be a helmet jellyfish (with missing tentacles), but thanks to our expert, global Scientist Ashore network - connected to the ship via telepresence technologies - we have solved the mystery!
Midwater expert Dr. Dhugal Lindsay helped us to identify this jellyfish as a member of the order Narcomedusae, and an undescribed species within the genus Bathykorus. This is only the second encounter with this animal, first spotted by NOAA Ocean Exploration’s ship Okeanos Explorer in 2015. Using the rays on top of the bell, we believe this animal likely eats other gelatinous animals like jellies and/or swimming sea cucumbers. Different from all other species in the genus, the animal’s brown color indicates to experts that this is a predator of bioluminescent prey. You never know what we’ll find when exploring the deep ocean in the Pacific Remote Islands!
The US waters surrounding Kingman Reef and Palmyra Atoll are home to some of Earth’s most pristine marine ecosystems. While recent expeditions have increased our baseline knowledge of the deep-water resources of this region, large areas remain completely unexplored, particularly areas north of the Kingman/Palmyra Unit of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Further explorations of these areas are urgently needed to address the management and science needs of the region as a monument management plan is under development, including a better understanding of the deep-water natural and cultural resources here, biogeographic patterns of species distributions, and the geological context of the region.

the internet can be so cool... I just got back from work, had a crap day, openned youtube, and suddenly I'm witnessing the second human encounter with whatever majestic creature this jellyfish is.
Jellies make everything better.
so awesome
It's absolutely beautiful.
I've heard a lot of sea creatures described as "alien looking", but this one gives me the most other worldly vibes of any I've seen.
Don't think I've ever seen a jelly with 3-fold symmetry before.
And it has antennae/antlers/tentacles-like appendages! How cool is that?
I didn't know any creatures in the last 500 million years had threefold symmetry.
we've seen at least a couple more in the past hour or so, it looks like this one might have lost a tentacle (?) at some point, or been born without one, because the others have had 4
Not a jellyfish. Hydrozoan Order.
That's the first thing I noticed too. If it indeed belongs to Narcomedusae, I found some pictures showing that they can have anywhere from 2 to 6 such "tentacles", though they're different genus Pseudaegina or Solmundaeginidae. So it's probably random?
I'll never get tired of hearing the excited comments of the scientists. I've been subscribed to this channel for many years now and it still amazes me with the new footages of deep sea life.
By the way, that's the first jellyfish I've seen where there aren't tentacles bellow the bell but on top of it and in such a very symmetrical pattern.
This is a beautiful video! I think it is very possible that this jelly has 3 fold symmetry naturally; the symmetry of jellyfish is often related to how often the jellyfish moves or pulses, which is in turn regulated by the amount of dissolved oxygen. It is quite possible that this jellyfish simply exists in an are with lower dissolved O2. Additionally, fossils of jellyfish with three fold symmetry have been discovered, and you can even occasionally see moon jellyfish with 3 fold symmetry. I think this is probably related to Narcomedusae.
It actually identified it in the video, my bad
This is amazing! The wonders of the sea. Thank you so much for filming all the creatures and letting us enjoy ❤
Incredible find! I love watching the live streams and wish there was chat available during!
agree!, more eyes on the map. sound cool
This video is almost as amazing as the one with the gulper eel from a few years ago, which is still my all time favourite video on all of RUclips.
But this jellyfish is indeed fascinating.
yeah~
I was online when you all saw the gulper eel and I was online watching this live when it floated into the frame as well!! Its always so cool to be one of the people viewing the livestreams when cool stuff shows up!!!
With the internet bringing every known fact to my fingertips in a matter of seconds, I usually feel like I've lost the sense of wonder and mystery that I had as a child while discovering the world. Reading old animal books from the 80s at the library with incomplete and incorrect information, it felt like I was reading ancient tomes describing unknowable mythic beasts. It's fantastic that we have so much info available to everyone now, but I loved feeling like there were new, worthwhile things in the world that we've yet to discover. Thank you for bringing back that feeling.
Nature is so stunning
you people are doing a great service for humanity sharing this!
this is one of the most amazing creatures ive ever seen! I love the work you guys do uncovering hidden treasures of the sea
this is why I get excited every time I hear that there is a new Nautilus expedition. Imagine seeing it live!
3:38 it waved goodbye with one of its tentacles, so cute
Exceptional footage - well done Team Nautilus!
the war of the worlds jellyfish
I was thinking the same thing.
Lol tripod jellyfish
I was lucky enough to be watching live when it was captured on camera again for the third time in history. Aliens really do exist.
*the locals are out there, i believe
This isn't proof of aliens, but the oceans are full of them
I'm a biologist and I've also never seen a jellyfish like that! so cool
so cool! jellies are my favourite too
Definitely trilateral symmetry. Looked like it from the bottom too.
Most jellies have radial symmetry. This type of jelly has also been seen with four tentacles, so there may be variation in how many such features they can have.
What if you were on the ISS and saw this! You certainly beat the odds finding this. Gorgeous. Beautiful video, thanks for sharing 🤘
Respectfully, as much as a discovery as this little guy is, he gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Definitely cruising for something to EAT!
I assume that's because it kind of looks like a headcrab from the Half-Life series.
Wow! The 3-point orientation and angles are amazing! I wonder how many are out there that we haven't spotted yet!
I've got two names for It. "The Tripod Jellyfish" & "The Sputnik Jellyfish"
Sputnik jellyfish seems the most accurate
Sputnik Jellyfish sounds so cool!!
Jellyfish are fascinating, the way they reproduce I have to imagine there's a new species of jellyfish that evolves every few years if not in even less time than that
The deep oceans are so amazing, like a whole new world filled with equally amazing creatures. ❤ 😊 Thank you all for sharing it with us.
I like that we are still finding new things
They say that ocean life is barely known like only a single-digit like 5% of ocean life is estimated to be discovered and recorded it's more likely we'll be finding new stuff all the time
this is why you always hear scientist or biologist always say they always disover new species. this is an example how little we explored the ocean
Huh thats strange
This might be a dumb question but is the center part (mouth?) bioluminescence? It looks super bright!
I know this is cliché, but I honestly don't think there are ever any dumb questions if they're sincere. Bc of your question, I now too want to know. So how many people will learn something bc of your very not dumb question 🤗 sorry for the after school special speech 😂
@@Bowie_E haha you're not wrong! Thank you 😊 hopefully we'll get an answer 😃
I don't know for sure, but I'd say no. Bioluminescence is visible when it's dark. The team has also said that their cameras aren't sensitive enough to see it even when the lights are off... but it sure is an interesting critter.
@@shrugg6593 thanks for the info! Makes sense 🙂
It is such a cute cool jelly. Kind of reminds me of those video game enemies called metriods.
Nature has cool creature designs
What an unusual jelly. Nwver saw anything like it.
Videos like these are why i love this channel.
Beautiful colors in this footage. Unreal.
Just a wonderful quiet amazing world!! To be on the team and see thses things in person!!! Wow an adventure of a lifetime!!
How do these creatures even continue to reproduce when there seems to be so few of them.
What a trippy, alien thing! It doesn't even look real. I had no idea jellyfish existed with tentacles coming out the top. Really enjoying catching up on the nautilus videos and seeing what unique animals dwell on the deep.
And they're funny tentacles. Look more to be for sensing and balance orientation in the water. They help streamline the movement. Otherwise that little bell would probably struggle to swim in a straight line in the currents.
He just straight vibing. Respect
This species was seen before but was still unknown. I’d nickname it the three pronged jellyfish since it may use them to catch prey (as detectors) or for locomotion.
The previous time it was seen, back in 2015, it had four tentacles.
@@evilsharkey8954 true, this must be a close relative then since they both look very similar
Straight up alien!
Creatures with trilateral symmetry are soooo weird.
Me encanta la Biología Marina y los misterios que hay en el fondo del mar
Any updates on this species?? Did they give it a layname yet?
Always wondrous with EVNautilus!
That little guy is pulsing a lot for a deep sea jelly. Most of the time, the deep sea ones just float around with the occasional pulse.
Interesting triangular symmetry.
Wowwww! I'd like to meet this little guy a hit better. And the sea cucumber that just skated on past 😂
So many crazy animals down there
WOWWW A BIOLUMINESANT SEA CUCUMBER IN THE BACKGROUND TOO
This is wild! It looks so incredibly alien! Wow!
Wow! They remind me of swan's or pelicans with giant long beaks. That was cool!
Who needs Space Aliens when we have amazing creatures like THIS right here on Planet Earth!! 💙🤗
I’d love to know the daily thoughts these creatures have as they glide through the ocean. Can they feel love or grief for instance. Among a million other questions about this basically alien organism. Cool stuff btw.
They sound like I do at the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks in NYC: “Ooh, aah, ooh!” 😊
100% a new species! Congrats!
such a cool jelly
Splendid lovely footage. Thank you !
😮!! Wow! So exciting and beautiful, guys. Thanks for sharing all this!
CRAZY JELLYFISH love you guys and what you do ❤
Brilliant. Just brilliant and breathtaking
Where r u guys located? Man I love your stuff!
Crowned Medusae are jellyfish that produces bioluminescent light when lights off. That one is a 3 tentacled. So it's just a baby.
This is why i live in Colorado, thats beautiful but freaking terrifyingly.
Beautiful. I was nervous about the craft doing manoeuvres that would shred it to pieces :( It seems to happen on this channel.
Incredible lifeform. Imagine what is still out there waiting to be found.
Narcomedusae.. wow.. i immediately have to Google this 😊
Neat Pikmin 4 promotion :)
What are the laser lights for? And why do you turn them off while watching something?
The two lasers are as close to perfectly parallel as possible, and exactly 10cm apart. They're used to judge the size of objects and creatures onscreen. They're often turned off while animals are nearby to avoid harming or blinding the animals.
@@littlesnowflakepunk855 Thank you so much.
Looks like a Moebius creature
omg look at that little freak 👀 what a wild find!
Camera quality...WOW!
How gorgeous!
Right?!?!?! It's amazing!
@@EVNautilusAbsolutely! It’s so intriguing.
You Win..... Coolest thing I have seen on the web this year.... 🤓🤯
So I've looked at and been watching jellys/Medusas for the past two week probably before bed, and have yet to see a jelly with this symmetry, especially the way its holding its tentacles upwards.
I hope theyre able to interview that jellyfish
You are all so great!
look at that thingamajig go! it’s so satisfying to watch it move :)
That is just so wild looking!! Did you ever find out the name for it??
I believe it's from the order narcomedusae. They saw this jelly for the 3rd time in the current dive.
It’s the Dreadnaut jelly. It usually hangs around in a bad batch
it also looks a little like a raspberry jelly but they have different arms and are in deep water
Beautiful ❤
It kinda looks like a poppy flower. Neat
It reminds me of a bacteriophage, but upside-down. I wonder if it sort of like, UFO-style hovers down onto prey items?
so freaking cool!! 1:23
This jelly looks like a living weapon Aquaman would use. If it doesn't have a name I'd call it the Whip Jelly or if it only has 3fold symmetry across all instances, the Tricorne Jelly.
Wtf is that!!!
Jellyfish 🙂
Guess this means that Bathykorus is no longer monotypic. I suggest we call this jellyfish the "Darth Maul Jellyfish" or the "Darth Sidious Jellyfish" to keep in theming with the name of the other known member species of Bathykorus!
🎶 *What is the music, please?* Love this jellyfish!! ❤
fascinating how weird deep sea wildlife can get, and how many more new species keep getting discovered that look like nothing else on the planet
I wonder what the purpose of the tentacle things being on the top of the jellyfish is
But on the seabed it seems to me that there is a kind of road .. A line far too straight .. Am I wrong?
Great! I need HDR video for look this )))
Very cool!
It's an alien...
The tentacles are the jellyfishes arms to me as well ❤
Kinda looked like a lamp shade with a yellow bulb inside lol.
This look like an enemy from Pikmin 😂
ty por the video.
That's the new mod for life
What's the tiny spider bug thing?
You guys meet the most beautiful sea creatures. Thank you for sharing.❤
what is this little thing that rapidly moved in the right side of the camera at 3:25
@user-gf8zv4ov2x I strongly believe it is an arrow worm, the only creature of suitable size and capable of developing such speed I can think of.
