Some people may be misunderstanding what Alok said. He is not asking you to stay in the same stock for a long time (unless of course if it remains in momentum). What he is saying is this: Do not remove chunks of your capital out of the market. Even if you do swing trading (with overall profitable results), you may grow faster and greater if you continue to implement your working strategy with a gradually growing capital. If your 100 became 150 in an year, don't remove 50 and invest in an average return MF, and continue your strategy again with 100. Instead, continue with 150 and make it 225, and so on. When you realize the strategy isn't working anymore, revise your strategy according to ongoing situation.

I entered the market in 2018 by 2020 March I blew away half my capital, but I carried on with an expectation of 15% returns. In 2024 when I look back after spending 6 years, the market has surprised me with an unexpected return of 55% CAGR over 6 years. I just don't love investing I am obsessed about it. Even if someone gives me a crore I will still choose value investing over Trading.

Your presentation does not talk about dud stocks that fade away in time. I know a family who used to buy stocks as they came. These were paper stocks. Once the effort for Demat started, they realised that most company had wound up. Eicher was one company that went from 10 rupees per share to 4800 rupees. If they had not had Eicher but something else, there was no happy ending. We need to focus on quality picks. Maybe that prompts people to switch at shorter durations. Thanks!

There is this quote I keep in all my excel sheets where I track my investments just so I don't forget.
Most important question isn’t “how can I earn the highest returns?” but rather “what are the best returns I can earn for the longest period of time.” Average returns for an above-average period of time = extreme outperformance. It’s the most obvious secret in investing. - Morgan Housel

6:50 if the whole world data is showing that the equity holding period has reduced from 5 yrs to 1 yrs, that means you and I have to change our perspective and better stay in stock for less than 1 yrs, this is what momentum investing is all about...that the stock will perform only for a very short period of the time when the stock was in the uptrend momentum, so better be inside that stock in that momentum period.

Sir one needs to be of a certain age to enjoy the money they've compounded over the years. If you're say beyond 55 and you have a corpus of 5-10 Cr, then its not that useful because you've already spent your best years slogging for someone else. Long term holds good only as a retirement plan or your kids inheritance. That's the reason most people want money sonner, so that they're independent and dont waste their best years.

This is all the more reason that govt. should encourage long term by reducing LTCG and not increase it. May be even introduce another slab where ltcg is 0 if its over 5. That nonsense narrative of simplifying slabs is BS, simplification makes sense if it also benefits genuine investors and also encourages productive investment behaviour (non speculative).
