To me, Ulcerate have been the best extreme metal band on the planet for more than 10 years by now. They have in my opinion never released a less than stellar album since their inception, but it maybe took a couple of albums to fully develop a TRULY unique style and expression transcending mere, say, Immolation worship. Personally I think it was around the excellent 'Vermis' album from 2013, that they, at least to me, once and for all left all the other pretenders to the throne in the dust, and they haven't looked back ever since. Personally, I hear no bloat on the new album; an exhausting listen for sure, but exhausting in the good way. Jamie is once again the star of the show (best drummer in extreme metal these days along with John Longstreth and Hannes Grossmann?), but I have to single out the guitar work of Michael Hoggard; this man takes the Robert Vigna of Immolation template, and further elaborates on it with cool post metal influences; absolutely stellar stuff! 'Cutting the Throat of God' to me is the first 5 out of 5 album of the year, and I really can't for the life of me imagine ANY album of 2024 challenging this one as my AOTY; Ulcerate have never been better! This in an album that the metal community will be talking about in reverence still in 5, 10 and 20 years from now, I predict. Awe inspiring... 👌👌

    • @thrallsofmetal

Necrotic Nick- These guys have really carved out their own niche within extreme metal. In terms of extreme metal there are few bands that can bring this level of atmosphere and scope but also be insanely technical in their own way. When Ulcerate comes on the playlist you know it's them. They have a dissonant signature I guess. I think they did a marvelous job once again even though I feel their last one was a bit better. They're still doing what they do and still pushing their sound in some interesting directions. It's amazing how something so insane sounding can actually be catching but with this one and the last one they've really started finding a way to be melodic in their own way. I don't know if this will be my album of the year but it's gotta good chance of being on the list.

I've listened to the album 6 times now. Just got my vinyl and I'm currently giving it a proper spin. For me, this might eventually even become my favourite Ulcerate record. With the last two records they've further developed their sound to a direction I really enjoy. A great record!

Necrotic Nick- I had to take a break after the 3rd time through but I've been coming back to certain tracks. It's such a huge album and it's almost impossible to pick up on ever nuance with how layered and atmospheric it is but it consistently draws me in. I'm leaning more toward their last one being a bit better but this is still a killer album and I'm curious to see how their sound continues to evolve.

I am new to Ulcerate....seen their last record, but don't know if I jammed it at the time. I listened to this premiere on BMP last week and I instantly pre-ordered the vinyl. I listen to a ton of Metal/Hard Rock and check out new albums every Friday. As I was somewhat complaining to friends the other day that here we are in June, and no album has really stood out at being a contender for AOTY, when I heard this one last week, that changed everything...I get the vinyl this coming Wednesday, and won't listen to it until then...cuz I want full immersion. It's like parts of Ruins of Bev, Fires in the Distance, and other stuff done so well it's just awesome.

Everything Is Fire, the Destroyers of All, and Shrines of Paralysis are all really good albums and I really liked Stare into Death and Be Still. This new album though I think is slightly better than their last one. Im a huge ULCERATE fan. So expectations after Stare into death were off the charts as that was my AOTY of 2020....On Cutting the Throat, I had a similar reaction after my first listen--just what I had hoped for--continuing the development of a singular sound that is crushing and technical AF but also emotionally heavy and dark...Tho did seem a bit long in places--again had similar thoughts about taking the scalpel to a few tracks...But now after 5 or so full spins I've surrendered LOL to the almost frantic barrage of riffs/mind bending rhythmic changes and caterwauling dissonant drones...I'd go with 4 1/2 pentagrams and definitely one of my top albums at mid-year...
