For RTE's 50th anniversary, they had a show in which Graham Norton interviewed Gay Byrne, Mike Murphy and Pat Kenny. Graham asked them this question. If you were in charge of RTE, knowing all that you know now, is there anything you regret, or woukd you change anything. Gay Byrne imnediately spoke up. His response will live with me forever "RTE's biggest regret, and mine as well, is that we should have better appreciated Dermot Morgan". This one answer got a standing ovation.
Dermot died...but he certainly died at the very top of his game at that point. Who knows where he would have gone following that. Father Ted when you look at it objectively and in detail stands up to the likes of Fawlty Towers and Python and even surpasses in some cases.
Thanks for uploading this clip. Brings back a lot of fond memories. Have not seen that interview since I watched it live on the Late Late. Quite poignant to see Dermot looking forward to starring in Ted. The good certainly die young.
I agree with most of these comments. He was black listed by rte. He even stated after he was doing father ted. He found it hard to make a living in ireland. HUGE MISTAKE BY RTE
it wasn't fr ted they turned down . RTE radio had a lot of problems with his show scrap saturday . rumour had it at the time it was ended due to pressure from the government of the day . the show RTE turned down was an Irish version of the news quiz according to a book called our father written by Dermot Morgans 2 older sons .
RTE never turned his show down, they didn't get the option to even take it up. Linehan and Matthews pitched Father Ted straight to Channel 4 and they took it and ran with it, the RTE thing is a myth.
Channel 4 was the best fit for Dermot, why stay with a backward, conservative, heads in the sand, don't get out of their pram, complacent Irish broadcaster RTE.
I was 1 yrs aged next to The king Of Norway when I visited Ireland...He was shot in the Back and the Head and cut to ribbons by Giant Scissors--It is Me Home country WE were just trying to bring Me Back Home Where I was Born,.,..Port Authority Corpus Christi Texas...Is The Only Lead I can Think of Mr.Dermot Morgan I'm Happy you Performed Eloquently for me and our former King Friend of Norway-A young King of 46,..To this Thumb My Fingers at you Norwegians,...Not coming for what he Him-self considered a Chancellor,..His Current Life is of an Irate Same,...And Is considered the current Same,...My-self Im 45,....His Name is James,My Name Is Unimportant because you Dont Care for Bruenettes being of Good Cheer(and Other kings)needed by Norway.

Agree. RTE love to elevate shit like Twink and turn our backs on actual talent.
Thanks for uploading!
What an absolute legend
He brought a lot of joy. Still does.
My mam interviewed him when she was teaching in Dublin because Dermot was 1 of her students uncle
Legend
FANTASTIC.
Problem is he was that much of a genius until Father Ted not many people knew about him!
I think you mean not many people outside ireland knew him. All of us here did from the early 80s when he did the live mike

Imagine if he had smashed the guitar into Byrnes face 🤣🤣🤣🤣
