  • On this episode of Hot Rod Unlimited, Elana Scherr speaks with Bruce Meyers, the creator of the Meyers Manx dune buggy. Bruce visits the HOT ROD Studio with some restored and original Manx buggies for a photo shoot and explains the inspiration behind the development of the Manx in 1964 and its subsequent racing and cultural legacy. Then we head to the Meyers Manx headquarters, ride in an original Meyers Manx with the Manx club and take a new Dual-Sport manx on the autocross.

I think Mr. Meyers is a very modest man. Companies spend millions designing cars that look half as good as what he worked out in his shed.

I missed this one somehow! I love the Manx! I would love to build one with my kids (9,11,and 14). They love watching stuff like this, Roadkill, and MCM and helping me wrench on my grandfather's Dakota Sport. (My 9 year old replaced the wiper bushing and was SO proud watching the arms under the cowling crank!). Thanks for this one, Elana. It's the kind of video that makes me glad I subbed to MT.

-> They also poked fun at Speed Buggy on an episode of Futurama, by melting down Speedy Buggy & Speedy Racer & a couple other old cartoon cars. It was funny. They reversed Speed Buggy’s colors (Red/Yellow - I assume to avoid paying the copyright fees).

Great, great video. My father built a 'Buggy before I was born, and kept it in to my 20s. I don't know what brand it was, all I know is it had a Beetle engine (as did most), with individual brake handles for the rear wheels. Ridiculous fun, that car - I'll always remember it. I'd love to build my own, with a Subaru engine, when I have time, money and most importantly, space to do it!

A couple yrs later, he noticed the vin number 000000001! He offered me a 59 Plymouth w/40,000 miles ,or the Tow'd I took the Plymouth. I have no Idea where the Tow'd is today...

Watching this has made me realize why the Automotive industry in Australia is the way it is. In Australia we have this mentality of if it's broke just buy a new one. But as car manufacturers in Australia are seeing, people are moving to manufacturers that supply vehicles that won't die on the side of the road. It eliminates aftermarket parts manufacturers, and companies that make crap. In a way that is sad because will will live in a world where vehicles will lack any personality or soul or make a person feel like they have achieved something by owning a custom vehicle. We are slowly being sterilized.
