    About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on RUclips videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Concrete tips... Dont put concrete under posts as it will be like a cup and hold water. Instead put gravel in botom of hole, place post, add a bit of dirt to stop concrete from reaching bottom, then add concrete. It will allow drainage, prevent rapid rotting. Tip 2... Add 2 16p nails in each side of post to act as rebar conecting post to concrete. I learned that from years of fence and deck building as a young man. You're welcome. Happy building 😃👍

Excuse me. Where do you add the nails? At the base?

Roost Bar Tip. Attach your roost bars using a hinge. This way you can swing them up to the ceiling to allow for a much easier clean out of the coop.

Grate advice on your first build. At 75 I did my first build ever. I have Since build three more. My husband showed me how to use all the power tools, but I built the coops and runs. I put a two ft border of hardware cloth attached to the bottom of the run on the ground. On top I sat painted concrete blocks. In the blocks I planted chicken safe plants. On the floor I added linoleum on three of them. On the last one I used the same rubber based paint. I have yet to use the new coop. Thank you for your informative channel.

I’ve watched a lot of coop videos cause I want to only make one and not want to redo things I don’t like. Your video was definitely one of the best I’ve seen. Got lots of great ideas!

Love his kind of chicken coop. Planning to build one almost identical. I just want one wall to be an entire door so I can clean the chicken coop very easily.

I am a steel broker, and my only suggestion on this ADORABLE hen house is a good coat of Rustoleum on your roof. A nice reflective white. It will last and look, better longer. Those round windows are very cute.

I built this using your plans. Hens moved in last night. I found the most difficult part was getting the foundation square. I would add the roost and nesting boxes last, because it was difficult to work over and around them. Good job.

First off let me say thank you to you and Lorraine for helping the Hollars....great how your community comes together for one another. Love your chicken coop, you did a great job on it.
And tell Penelope she did a great job as your help and painter also. It is so nice she wants to get in there and help you as well as working in the garden to help Lorraine. Y'all have a Blessed day.

Jason you are a true artist. Yes you can do great carpentry work, but it is very obvious that you create, not just build. I love it when you show us your just do it way of creating so many beautiful and useful things. I see the same just do it spirit in Lorraine and Penelope too! Thank you all for the awesome super creative video content in every video you post! Journey On!😊🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤

Jason you could have used the 4x4 post as corner post if they was long enough and attach the walls to them up to the roof line so no need to shorten the corner post.

I laid out 1/4" hardware cloth extended beyond the coop to overall the bottom of the entire chicken yard, up the sides and over the top because - Predators will find a way. It costs more but worth it.
It was one of the few things I purchased for my chicken coop and yard. I am like you, I used what I had. I found a roll of linoleum taken out of a home remodel for the flooring & up the sides a little for ease of cleaning. Because it is Las Vegas, NV desert heat and not so cold winters, I only will use walls when needed. I did invest in a double nest roll away nest which I didn't put in the center divider. My girls prefer to use the same nest, sometimes at the same time so I wanted it to be large. The fencing around the whole chicken yard is 8ft tall...again...Predators. Love your round windows. Having the sloped roof makes for much easier rain & snow run off. I just love your coop. The finishing touches make it very nice.

Finally, the perfect chicken coop. Your plan is awesome. You address any issues with building a coop and it's pleasing to the eye. I love that you made it a family project. Your daughter is adorable and enjoys helping her Mom and Dad. 😊😊 Best wishes.

  • @susiessoapstuff1459
    @susiessoapstuff1459 3 года назад +1

If you get some cheap linoleum, you can use that for the floor, and you can actually use a kid's mop to mop out that floor. If you go to a flooring store, sometimes they sell remnants for little cost. Or you can buy a 6' x 9' roll at Lowe's.

The side that has the nesting box door and the two round windows, I would paint eyelashes on the two round windows and pink lips on the nesting box door. I would not be able to restrain myself, lol. I like how you built a taller coup. Very nice, and you always do such a good job of explaining. peace and love, y'all ♡♡♡

A totally amazing coop. Looks great and completely functional. My one worry is that in the winter, it might be a bit draughty for the chickens because of the positioning of the round windows. Might need to think about covers for them to keep out the winter winds and rain. That said, where you are, you ,might not have such weather problems. I’m in the UK and we certainly do 😋

I will deff be using some of your ideas !
I've learnt that oval and bigger is better for roost, for chooks toes, say 2x2 with beveled edges..
also chickens love triangles to peep and walk thru, like into nesting boxes and doorways, and that over head cover by exit is very comforting for them. 😊
    beautiful work bro.

Love the coop! The round windows & the door for the nesting boxes look like a face. You could also paint the nesting box door to look like a planter box & turn the windows into big sunflowers. You could paint other smaller flowers around them in the “planter box”. It is really nice & looked like a pretty easy build. You are a great builder. Keep up the great work & videos. Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️🌻🥰🙏🙏🙏
