What I thought was a grand irony with Van Saar is that IF they told the mechanicus and handed it over in those early days, Van Saar would be richer then their wildest dreams. The Mechanicus paid treasure hunters in planets for finding an STC that made knives. Imagine what they’d get.
@@elijahherstal776 Or, perhaps you are correct in that Mechanicus is fully aware but is simply biding their time, and resources, allowing Van Saar to hunt down the missing pieces. Van Saar found the first part, but it's incomplete. Why crush the Van Saar like a bug when they can allow that bug to scurry around doing all the work to put pieces together then step in and take it once it's complete or near complete.
@@zzippo81 , the flaw I see in that is that the Cogboys are entirely capable of doing that- I mean, Skitarii are highly capable, and even when they aren't they've got things at their disposal that can take on anything the Underhive can throw at them. Letting Van Saar "Do all the work" doesn't make sense when the Admech is capable of doing so in far less time, and far more efficiently- and the resistance they meet would be liquified in short order. Think about this: -What if they further damage the STC? -What if they find pieces that give them an edge that even the Admech can't stand up to? -What if they unleash something worse than radiation, like some Doomsday Device from the Dark Age that can't be controlled? -What if elements of Van Saar can be leveraged to lend their findings to the Ruinous Powers or another enemy? The idea that the Admech are unaware of it is highly unlikely. The idea that they'd be content to allow Van Saar to 'do the work' and find it is even more unlikely. In all honesty, the newer fluff seems to be written by several people without communication or some editorial review. A lot of things don't make sense (like why their ancestors were rad-poisoned, and they don't recruit beyond their territory so their 'gangs' can operate for longer periods of time- or at least marry outside their clan to remove those residual effects). My theory is that the STC fragment is long gone, and wasn't really much of one. It's likely they found a manufactorum to produce their weapons and tech, and they've simply replicated these processes. And the 'radiation' might even be a lie- after all, it does keep other gangs out of their territories... and that's a good idea when you're the most financially powerful house on the planet. We do know Necromunda had some pretty advanced tech when the Imperium discovered the planet. Honestly, the Van Saar tech could just be holdovers from that era. If the STC story is true... well, again... I'm pretty sure it's long gone. It's very likely the Admech was made aware of it- Hell, it's even likely that the reason it's gone is because of the Admech and Van Saar is just building what they still have schematics for- perhaps the secrets to constructing some variants of otherwise common weaponry (on a military scale, at least) were part of the exchange made long ago. House Van Saar is producing weapons and tech... but lacks the ability to mass-produce, and their artificers are simply looking for more ancient tech and manufactorums to utilize, more tech to reverse-engineer and sell. Hell, if they ever did have any chance of finding an STC- or even a fragment- if it was still down there? You can bet that between precog psykers and House Delaque that Lord Helmawr would have found out, panicked, and offered the Admech every Enforcer and Hired Gun available in their search to extract it.
If admech indeed took it already, why don't we see their unique armors and crazy tech elsewhere in the mechanics forces? Does the machine cult immediately use new finds or do they vet them maybe?
@@DarrinSK Certain technologies can be considered blasphemous or otherwise be locked away indefinitely by the Mechanicus. Back in the Mechanicum days, for example, Arkhan Land (the Land Raider was sort of named after him -- aka. Land's Raider) was one of the foremost archaeotechs of the Mechanicum who in part made determinations about what was accepted and what was heretical. We don't have enough information to say whether Van Saar's tech would fall into that category of tech heresy, but if it involves any xenos tech/influence then it's certainly possible.
I used to mock them as a bunch of rich kids, but after the lore dump, I’m kinda digging them. Also, the first picture of the Van Saar ganged looks like Stephen Lang.
Been into warhammer for nearly 20 years. Dad got me into it and love that we have this to enjoy between us. But damm I know next to nothing about necromunda
Great stuff, great timing as I've just finished priming 5 van saar figures (from the set of 10) I'm definitely more of a collector than wargamer - as my schedule and location are difficult to get regular games in. Thanks for sharing ,the background was super interesting and inspiring. I am thinking of building up a small force using necromunda gangs & skitarii as a planetary defense force. I will continue to check out the channel
I too dismissed them. I'm not a shoot and run player and that's what I assumed they were. But there's so much more to them and in true Necromunda fashion, you can build on what they are to be what you want them to be. I've had this box set sitting on my desk for almost a month now and after looking over the paints required I figured it's time to atleast assemble and paint, but then I started listening to the lore tonight (including this fantastic video) I'm quickly growing to like them.
Leutin did a real deep dive on Van Saar lore and it's pretty fascinating what he dig up. It sounds like Van Saar actually originated from a dark age/golden age tech ship crashing on Necromunda and the descendents of the crew formed Van Saar, with only the innermost members of the gang really being privy to what is really going on with the STC. It also sounds like the STC is merged with the structure of the hive itself, creating new problems because apparently part of how they hid it from the mechanicum in the past is that they were constantly moving the STC around the hive. Furthermore, it sounds like they keep it hidden from the tech priests through a combination of bribing the planetary governors and the mechanicum's own very backwards view on technology. I'm not doing it justice here, just check out the full video Leutin did and you'll get a much better idea.
My first Necromunda gang was Van Saar. I called them the Bloodening, then the Simpsons came along and had a Halloween special called the Bloodening! They stole it from me ! jk.:) It's nice seeing Necromunda getting attention again. I loved playing it ages ago.
It was my fav gang too, still is even after 25 years, in the first edition i named mine as barbeque boys cause when they got the specialist skill i gave them a flamer as a close combat deterrent either had a flamer on the back, or attached to the lasgun/autogun (Rippley Style) or had it strapped to the bottom as under slung as the weapon had to be on the model to be Valid in GW matches. Man killed so many that thought about charging my guys to be set on fire and ran off the platform to then fall to their death. It was so funny people would be like WTF soo many flamers and my response is "what do you expect with a gang name like barbeque boys?" The leader had a metagun keeping with the theme of setting people on fire or turning them to slag. To be honest the gang was small but it was OP as fk i don't recall ever loosing a match once i got at least 2 flamers covering each other with overlapping fire. Needless to say the next time i play them they are very very cautious which is also great for my Heavy Plasma Cannon cause of all the templates they could not cluster their fighters up making it much easier to take one down at a time.
The Van Sar look being rotten inside was an interesting image of presentation. All of the gangs have some level of paradox within them. Corruption as a theme in Warhammer is also rather consistent in Necromunda. I was reminded of the Van Graffs from Fallout, who are a gang who sell high tech weapons. I don't think the two are related directly (as in I don't believe one took inspiration from the other - but it was a fun coincidence)
A house of the manliness men that ever I AM A MAN! Born from the backstabbing Escher and van saar for slave labor. Freed themselves and establishing a gang house from the ground up. With such names as punch sideiron, splint chesthair, thick mcrunfast. Eschers own rival not to mention.

If the mechanics ever got even a sniff of this gang the whole of necromunda would be a hell scape. The mechanics would stop at nothing to get that stc
If they've been at it this long, the Mechanicus is fully aware of it. The most likely truth is, the STC is long gone.

This lore makes me want to play necromunda underhive wars.

Love leutins stuff!
@2+Tough , I don't know how much time he spends on his research, but given how in depth he goes, I would have to assume it's a lot.
Which video was it?

You should run a house Goliath gang and name them Bonestorm

Thank you for your greate work here! Love necromunda and i think it has a lot of Soul!
Well done!
Thanks for this.
Everyone needs more necromunda players for friends!
I wish I did.
House Esher would be awesome to paint I reckon. Goliath I would want to convert into a nurgle tainted gang.
Hope more people start playing again

Oh sweet Primarch yes I love your Necromunda videos :D
I am here. And the rainbow warriors are ready to go
Van Saar = Gordon Freeman in 40k
Thanks for the video
Watch out when digging into STCs. You can get into a deep rabbit hole. It’s fascinating but may be too much of a tangent
I get the feeling that Goliath is going to be the faction you'll struggle with.
interesting, why do you say that?

I mean... all of that sounds rad haha. Not sure what I would struggle with
I'm expecting both the Palatine and corpse grinders being covered before Goliath.
Oh I see! I kept thinking that your original post meant that I’d hate their lore or something 😂😂 yeah I see what you mean now
There kinda the human version of the tau
Ah man, Van Saar should be modeled with futuristic surgical masks and mind their social distance!
Does house Van Saar contribute tech/weapons to the Imperial fist chapter?
Used to run my "ol Ratskin Renegades"
Are they still a thing??
well we dont really know what GW has planned in the future... but nah, not right now :/
Cawdor!
Next week! :)
Are we ever going to get your Goliath lore video? It feels so incomplete!
What part of the U.S. are you in?
In my mind, the STC is as big as a heavy book.
see I was thinking like a giant USB 3.0 thumb drive. Like, literally just expanded lol
I thought they were also production machines. Like, a giant 3d printer
I'm just getting into necromunda and freaking LOVE it! But lol don't the "douchers" and "that guy" of groups play van saar?
