You just covered my ALL-TIME favorite band! ALL-TIME!! Love Gary Holt, his riffs, and most of all his signature Guitar tone! Great job man that amp sounded vicious!
Very cool and as close to the Fabulous Disaster tone as I have ever heard. Gary used to used 2 Boss SD-1 pedals in series. He would keep 1 on all the time and then hit the second when he wanted that extra kick in the ass. Gary is my biggest guitar influence, such a genuinely cool and down to earth dude too. Great work dude!
Pleasures of the Flesh was recorded on a Mesa Mark III. I used to have one and it would nail the PotF tone. Very temperamental amp though and tended to sound different depending on the day. Cool amp but I ended up selling it.
In the Sept 1992 issue of Guitar School, there is an interview with Gary where they ask him about the various Exodus albums. When talking about PotF, his exact quote is: "I used Mesa/Boogie Mark IIIs, which we got the same day we went into the studio to record. I really didn't know how to use them, so it was hard getting a tone. It's also an inconsistent amplifier. Now, I use modified Marshalls, and they're great" My Mark III was a blue stripe. It was a cool amp but it really did sound different day to day. It could nail the PotF tone though and I could dial it in pretty close to the Master of Puppets tone.
Ultimately, my favorite tone ever is on Fabulous Disaster. Would love to get my hands on a Langner modded Marshall someday but I doubt that will ever happen. Looking at possibly getting my Jet City 22H done up with a Langner mod so keeping my fingers crossed...
Thanks Joe! The generosity of friends really came through for me on this one. I feel bad not sharing but my friendship with the gentleman who helped put together my amp is more important than being popular with people by giving it away via Kemper etc.
I love this! Being able to hear the strings bang against the metal of the frets at that saturation is one of my favorite things. Really been digging those 75's. I'm itching to build one of those multi-speaker recording cabs so I can have a bigger palette. Thanks for doing all this research for us. Makes knowing what I want to mod/build next a lot easier.
I love your reminiscences about the good old days of thrash. Remember them so well, even though it was all happening half way round the world (New Zealand) from me.
Crimson Ghost thanks man! What it does is rare. Lots of gain but you hear every nuance. Usually with that much gain its mushy like a recto. A recto needs a TS9 or a Grind pedal to make it more articulate and control the bottom end. This you just plug in and let rip.
This amp seems really tight and still punchy in the bottom and the mids sound mean. This is probably one of the best Marshall mods I have ever heard. It really turns this amp into something new but still retains that Marshall character.
CIRCLE OF TONE Your friend for guitar tone I'm a huge fan of Mastodon, and I'm super stoked for the new album due out Friday. Just wish they'd plan a tour date in Central Florida. I haven't seen them live in ages.
great tone you got there! Loving these tone recreations, esp the 80's thrash ones. Andy Sneap has , I believe, coproduced the upcoming Judas Priest album so look forward to that. Love all the Exodus tones over the years but I'm partial to the dropped tuning on Force of habit, personally. I saw Baloff with Exodus supporting Venom in London mid 80's, great show. Sorry to ramble on, keep em coming!
+chris bingham Good point! So we will see if he goes the big modern 5150/recto Sneap is famous for or the Marshall? I know which one I want! I hope he does not use vintage 30’s. So sick of those freqs.
Pleasures of the flesh is also my favorite exodus album. Super underrated. I think you hit the nail on the head with the bit about Dukes. You've heard the Baloff demos for Pleasures of the flesh, right? I wish we could have had a second album with the Bonded by Blood era lineup. Also, I would love to see a video on Megadeth tones from any of the first four albums. KIMB and Peace Sells are my favorites, though. I love these videos, man. I listen to mainly thrash, but keep making any tone videos.
You are the man! Thank for the knowledge. I love the nasty tone on Tempo of the Damned, cool to know how they done it. I also love Nevermore, but I think their best sound was on Enemies of Reality remixed by Andy Sneap
COT... Great video and tone match... Brings back memories listening to Exodus Bonded By Blood back in High school in the mid 80s... Were you ever into Savatage? Criss Oliva had a wicked guitar tone. I would love to hear you recreate his sound.
You got yourseslf a Todd Langner! Daaaaaaaaaamn :o Just awesome! Looking forward to see you perform some old school Megadeth, I'm sure it would turn out to be great. Cheers!
I am a big Sabbat fans. I bought that Sabbat flexi disk and still have it some where upstairs. It was released after the first album. Saw them in MacGonagels in Dublin and it's was the most mental concert I was ever at. Good times. Thanks for the memories.
Good video Man !!! you are doing Great Job !! I was wondering when are you gonna Do Adam Jones from Tool he has a great tone or Opeth ghost reveries albums has an amazing tones too.
I would love a video about some Megadeth tones. Particularly Countdown and youthanasia. It would probably be easiest to do cryptic writings since they are rumored to have used a jmp-1.
+Lizard King Great shout! Hard because they threw the kitchen sink at that one. I may not be able to source the gear. I actually pref Poland era. But RIP was brilliant too.
Oh mr tone your a treasure for us aging thrashers, I’d like to 2nd the notion of family in the pit and how hardcore is different. I grew up going to the river theatre and learning how to dance to exodus, death Angel, possessed and noticed when the high school footballers showed up and got it wrong , like you said “ good ole friendly violence” it’s maybe to subtle of a difference to certain folks. RIP the stone , the Omni , mabuhay gardens, the farm , learned me to do some sweaty dancing and take a hit fall down and get picked right back by family that I didn’t even know but were bonded by blood
SuperDeadRooster Yep. I know my limitations. I’ve been on the same stage as Dime in the peak of Pantrea. Albeit diving off the stage and getting into it with bouncers.
The ONLY guy who did killer mods on Marshalls! Todd was in a league of his own! All his mods were just a bit different from model to model. But I think the mods he did for the H team are his best work. Killer job with this vid and one of the many epic Exodus songs!
I also have an Exodus question I am dying to know...what Amp/effects does Rick Hunolt use for his solos on Pleasures and Fabulous Disaster. Those leads sound GREAT with that cool sound and I have always wondered what it is. Maybe you know and could share some insight? Cheers Mate, great channel and vids!
Thanks Man, me too! I know there is a very short delay on it and possibly a little reverb too. and then a 3rd element? I know I've been inside / outside /sideways into a Rockman Stereo Chorus (which is a truly amazing piece) and I can't get a sound like that from that piece atleast. Oh well, maybe someday Rick will tell :)
Owen you should do an episode in the first two Sabbat albums. History of a time to come and Dreamweaver are just amazing. Dreamweaver is a concept album based on the book Way of Wyrd by Brian Bates about Anglo saxon pagan spirituality. I love the idea of the speed metal concept album.
This has to my favorite tone you’ve done. Probably because Gary has the best metal tone IMO. Even the the later Exodus Engl tone with a Kemper kills. Everyone in the bay also had the Jose mod.
CIRCLE OF TONE. You’re welcome .. was happy to see and hear someone else besides myself that feels that same in regards to the “ultimate” sounding metal guitar tone... for me, that’s Gary Holt hands down, he wins it every time.... just something about it.. and you seem to get very damn close in achieving it... Gary’s tone along with his stellar riff writing, there’s nobody better in that genre, that satisfies my needs, period. Again that’s what works for me... By trade I am a singer but when I do play and think of metal guitar it’s always Gary that I’m drawn to.. Makes me get fired up and moving. Love the Holt riffs, my #1 fav of all time ... since 1983 when I was a young metalhead .. I was very lucky to have lived in SF Bay Area and experience bands like Exodus, every weekend , and watch them grow become the masters that they are... and as for the Todd Mods.... that was, for the most part, the staple or must haves for metal guitar tones in the SF Bay Area.... thanks again for the video.. I look forward to watching more of them... Peace
Forbidden is an excellent band. They've always had a bit of a prog edge to them, without ever really going full prog. Best exemplified by Twosted Into Form. Omega Wave had the musical goodness with tight production.
So your cabinets are in the VocalBooth? When you do these recordings? What size is it if so? Any internal absorption i.e. too small recording closures can cause issues. Tell me god damn it! 8O)
Killer video and killer tone. You have more balls than I, though, using NOS caps. Having the electronics background I have.....even on electronics that have little use, caps go bad with age. I have literally had a never used, NOS cap explode as soon as it was energized....and no, it wasn't hooked up backwards either. Anyways....killer as always.
Missed your comment. All of the caps were put through a tester and burned in then retested. They were not just tested with a cheap tester etc. Good point though.
Funny that you mention them. I've got a real old (1987) Marshall Lead Cabinet with 75s in it. Depending on the head, it sometimes works better than my V30s loaded Engl Pro cab that I just adore. I wouldn't call it scooped, but compared to most V30 cabs, it can sound a bit dull. Which seems to work great with really harsh heads like Rectos.
The 75s have swagger, snark and character. Vintage 30’s are great but piling mids has gone too far IMO. I think the repetition of 30’s being used by everyone has fans tuning out. What bands since the 2000’s stand up to the old school? They all use Vintage 30’s. They are “supposed” to sound better. But do they? That’s why when I do my album, I’m using v30’s like a pedal. I’ll use it on tight crushing riffs but not the whole song. Then you get that impact, and look forward to it popping up stay. instead of getting bored of it. My in between speaker is the g12h-75. Best of both worlds.
Gotta check that one out. As I see it, there's always a "right" and "wrong" speaker for a head with all sorts of things in between. I literally can't get my Engl Invader to sound good through anything BUT a V30 loaded Engl Pro or Mesa Oversized cab. Anything else and it get's ultra muddy and awkward. Also - speakers are not everything. I've yet to see two V30 loaded cabs that sound the same. But yeah, nowadays there's a lot of "when recording metal, use this, then cut that out, then compress it here". Do the fuck you want, metal is supposed to be about rebelling against this sort of conformity. Also: the fuck is the whole point of copying Sneap? He's still going to sound better than you.
I personally love the celestion 75 I had a couple for 4 by 12 Peavey cabs years ago that were loaded with my man did they Rock I wish I still had them now there's nothing like them
Jack Gibson has been in the band for at least 2 decades. He's on the 1997 live album called Another Lesson In Violence, which is probably my favorite exodus album because it is so heavy
CIRCLE OF TONE. In deed my friend. I'm only 21 but I've seen Exodus 7 times and still am going to see them everytime they come back to the Bay Area. I was the crazy dude that everyone was for sure talking about at the last 2 times I seen them. I was stage diving like mad, having to sneak past security and get on stage before they can grab me 12 times at the Exodus/Municipal Waste
I have one more tone related question, sorry to bug. You mentioned you loved Forbidden, have you checked out Blind Guardian's "Follow The Blind" album? That tone is killer and is in the same exact vein as Exodus Fabulous and Forbidden. Specifically listen to "Damned For All Time" from that album and you will really hear that tone. They mentioned they were really listening to non stop Forbidden during that era so they have said that whole album is very Forbidden influenced. Man if I could get a tone like Fabulous Disaster/Follow The Blind/MOD that would be awesome! I am guessing from all of your invaluable insights and opening of my eyes and ears something from Langner will get me there? Seriously, thanks again mate! Let me know thoughts on that "Damned for All Time" someday when you get a chance, you will dig!
+MrMuench I did listen to blind guardian briefly and remember loving the tone/songs but I never really got deep with them. I used to play forbidden songs as a teenager in my thrash band. You can listen to our old tracks on MySpace. Haha.
Can you tell me what equipment exodus was using on impact is imminent album. Everything i hear over 30 years listening i never hear more sharpest killer distorsion sound like it was on album impact is imminent
I talked w/ Kragan Lum and he said thier current tone they are using on tour now (2018-19) is that Modded Marshall from TOTD. And Kemper profiled it to take around.
Gary has the best tone ever......been an exodus fan since the very beginning , i felt like they embodied the thrash sound more then any of the other bands .
Funny Andy Sneap story! I had some email contact with him after the Sabbat days (History Of A Time To Come and Dreamweaver are STUNNING albums!) and he sent me a cd of stuff many years ago that is lost to the past..... The actual story was that a few of my friends went to see Stuck Mojo at the Camden Barfly when they did "Rising" so this was the early 90s. We got talking to some random dude as you do and he tells me how much he loves Andy Sneaps records. All the while, Andy was standing behind him! I pointed out he was there and the guy turns around and completely misses him and starts looking for him in the crowd! Booze made it way funnier than it was I'm sure but we were laughing our asses off! Andy is a bloody nice chap and responsible for so many bedroom producers getting their first stab into making records (including me!) Anyway, how bout doing a video that covers Doom Metal tone, so high gain fuzz pedals! Pallbearers "Foundations" sound for instance?
I had read that Gary did NOT start using the Todd Langner modded Marshall until 1990's Impact is Imminent which is around the same time Forbidden used it for TiF. I could be wrong through.
+uglijimus Yep. That’s why in the video I said it’s strange that I’m playing Like Father Like Son on the Langner when it was on the album after it. I just love that riff. Cheers!
This was fucking awesome mate!!! .......Can you try to create the sound of SABBAT? , history of a time to come and Dream Weaver ... speaking of Andy Sneap .. I wonder if people know Andy’s history?
Your talking about my favorite band!!! And favorite guitarist. Dude fyi. The celestion g12t75 speakers rule but.... not the new ones. Ive had them all and by far the 1980s with the old school labels made in uk crush everything after! Look into this if you haven't
eric cappy Eric...I have some insider info...there are 75’s that have little vents/grills on the magnet. THEY are the best ones. I collected them for years. But now I’m purging so I have a few on eBay.
Good video! Really enjoyed all the talk :) Thou I really wanted to know what exactly did that mysterious mod do to the amp, ha? :D Added gain? Changed the tone? Changed EQ? As far as the track, I thought it sounded pretty good, but I would have liked a bit more thickness. It almost sounded like I was listening to just 1 guitar track
Now while this sounds killer, to me the best sounding Exodus album is Fabulous Disaster. That album was recorded with a stock JCM 800, boosted with a BBE Sonic Maximizer and a Rane PE-15 parametric eq and of course Marshall cab with v30s , but anyways, killer job man ! BTW, didn`t know you could get the custom shop to make a SH-5, is it worth the extra cash over the standard one?
Robin Hansen Yep that's my next fav tone wise. They are all so killer. My fav album is pleasures. Something about the vibe always stuck with me. Great info on the setup. I had that EXACT rane eq. I had no idea Exodus used it. It's more a PA than a studio EQ. Out of shot is my JCM800. A must have amp. The really old SD's have stickers under them that tell you who wound them. Mine was an MJ wound specifically for the guy who sold me the pickup. Sometimes people want certain winders to hand wind their gear. Even though it's a current off the shelf job.
Didn`t know it was a PA EQ, I am thinking of buying one for my 1982 Marshall JMP 2204, it`s in combo form now tho, but still, it is a monster of an amp. Btw, can you recommend a good, but affordable either a 2x12 or 4x12 cab with V30s? Since I can`t afford the marshall cab at the moment.
I know it`s kinda pointless to comment on this, but I now use this cab and for the money, it`s pretty good. And a little tip if you didn`t already know. Gary nowdays or atlest back in the dukes days, used a parametric eq to boost the mids after he scooped them on the amp( Believe it was a presonus one). He said it in a video that he used that to get kinda of a cooked wah sound, I tried the same thing with my old MXR 6 band EQ( blue one) on my 1988 Randall RG100ES and it gets that wah thing going when you max the 800 band( about 18db of boost), definalty worth looking into imo!. I am ranting now, but just a little tip for ya! \m/
\m/ aggain \m/. thx for the low output kinda thing tip. both my jackson have high outputs i think, trembucker and invader are pretty high output right??.
I've been thinking about trying a similar concept with recreating tones, except either entirely in the box (without tone jacking, or premade IRs) or entirely with an old digitech RP150.
Liked video title, liked the tone, love the blah blah "uninteresting" tid bits, which for me are interesting, lol. Had a Cherry Coke while watching this video (dont drink this sht often but today I felt like it). I'm more into guitar and guitar secrets than Trash, though (full disclosure, lol). 2 thumps up man. I really like your energy.
Great vids man! I have a serious question about the guitar tone of Tim McMurtries on the 1st M.O.D. Album (Method of Destruction with Billy Milano U.S.A. for M.O.D. but you already knew that I am sure! Is that guitar tone a Langner Modded sound? It's very unique and somewhat in the same vein as Exodus sound. Please share insights if possible. Cheers Mate!
Thank you very much! That would be truly awesome as there is just no info on that stuff. No matter how many 10's of year I keep searching I can't find crap. Oh yeah man, Gross Misconduct, No Glove and True colors are some killer stuff. I like this album better than the first but that tone on the first is just crazy! Especially from a mostly punk guy. Has a pretty unique Thrash tone.
i never heard anyone in metal history that they have more sharper guitar sound distorsion like on impact is imminent album listening metal over 30 years. today with so much technical crap they can"t make a razor sharp thrash metal sound like in late 80s and early 90"s
CIRCLE OF TONE Your friend for guitar Well, Exodus kicked ass, of course. RHCP were great back then too. They were still mostly funk and they were jumping about a foot off the stage, just jumping up and down, for almost the entire show. How they could play like that, I don’t know.
Hey I just lucked into a 2204 which apparently was modded by Todd Langner (extra crunch mod). Is there any way to find out what this mod actually is/does/how it differs from stock? I can't find any info on this thing! Thanks!
pineneedlesandfog That’s part of the mystique of the Langner mod. People who own them tend to keep their cards close to their chests. It’s why I was in “don’t ask for a schematic/Kemper” mode. Todd may have had a favorite but the amps were tuned/tweaked to whoever was asking for the work. So there are variants. It’s awesome that you have one. We need a special handshake or tattoo. Lol. I’m overdoing it but if you may not want to post gut pics asking for advice etc as yours may be unique.
Heyyy---ohhh. I recently got a Langner 4 x 12 cab with blown Greenbacks ...for free! Going to wire it up with a pair of Celestian Vintage-30s and a pair of Greenbacks after I re-tolex this heavy-assed ,beast of a cab!!! Apparently, less than 10 have ever been built... has no logo on it... but this is what I've been told.... and yes, I live in the SF Bay Area! 😎🤘🎸
You probably won't see this comment. But eh... worth a shot.. what do you think of the Rob Dukes era of exodus? I personally loved the exhibit A and B records. I get yelled at for this all the time.. but I even loved the bonded by blood re recording...
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I had made my initial comment before finishing the video. My bad. I can see why you'd think he was too hardcore. But damn. The Wacken show with him had so much energy. He may have used terms like "kill" and "blood" but I don't think he really meant it. I always saw it as a way to get people in the pit pumped up. I could be wrong though. You've earned a sub! Thanks for the reply :)
I was going to ask if Death Angel had the same Mods on there Marshalls from that same era 80's thrash. I remember they had 50 watt heads with a mod that sounded awesome back then. I have never been able to find out what the mod was or who did it. When I saw Death Angel back in 87 or so they had the best sounding Marshall's I had ever heard. I have seen Exodus three times live and every time the guitar tone was different. All the times I had seen them sounded nothing like there albums. Two of the shows sounded good one was terrible that was in 1989. cool video
I snuck my cassette recorder to this show. this guitar tone was different then when I saw them earlier and then in 91 with Pantera and suicidal. The Show they played with pantera was terrible so scooped you could not hear or make out the guitar riffs just a loud his with a snare beat. The Oxnard show was really good and clear sounding. Not as much gain on Gary's amp ruclips.net/video/KdUhUbtrTqE/видео.html
I’ve been listening to old Death Angel all week. I always presumed they were stock JCM800 with a boost. They sound great but straight/unmodded to me but I’m just guessing. Probably the most underrated songwriters in metal.
Much respect for this kind of experiment! Exodus guitar tone is the holy grail of metal guitar for me personally. I'm just going to give you my opinion on the things that are not that on point. As far as the frequency spectrum goes, I think you are missing a lot of high end, that presence, the "bite", and the brilliance. Also, you have too much low mids, that give a "muddy" feel. As for the rest, I think you need more attack and punch, but that might as well come from Gary's playing. Keep up the good work!
Cheers! You may have a romantic ideal of how your fav guitar sounds are in your head vs reality. I do it all the time. A lot of the old school was slightly darker/scooped compared to today’s modern tone which is all upper mids and highs like you explained. Go back and listen to like father like son (not crappy RUclips rendering but the CD’s or albums). You may be surprised that is darker than you remember.
I always do AB tests, but I thought you were chasing after the "Tempo of the Damned" tone. If you were after the "Fabulous Disaster" tone, then you're quite on point.
Bailoff was Great. Zetro is a bit similar in style. Dukes was a more hardcore type . I saw all 3. Exodus used to play w/ hardcore bands opening for them.
Tempo of the Damned is my fav Exodus Album. All the songs are solid. Zetro has a hell of a voice. About EMG HZs....People shit on these all the time. I have the HZ4s in my ESP Alexi 600 and I prefer the sound over other pickups. I sound cleaner, I can play a bit harder with em, I can drop my bass EQ a good bit and slam the MIDs almost to max and get these wonderfully birght crunchy power chords and very unique single notes. I have played EMG 81s and the like....nah. Sounds dull and generic. ill keep my passives. plug n play baby. 1 knob, 1 pickup{only one that matters} no PEDALS no battery!
Boy Aditya yep! Tokai copied the short lived "Rand" guitar made famous by Vivian Campbell on the White Snake still of the night video. It's a Tokai VC-75. My first proper guitar I owned.
Personally unless you are playing a massive stage with 100k people, pickups are way over rated. The AMP and pedals make the difference. Of course I play in a tiny apartment so cannot use mega watt amps.
Cramel glad you like the vids. Sign of the times you have to dance like a monkey sometimes. I was getting 20 views doing the less hyped titles. I am kinda hyped though when I talk about this stuff. I get carried away. I don't lie in the titles. For some gear nerds it may be an anti climax because they know what was used. So the more you know, the more irked people get. IMO finding out that it was EMGhz is enough to pass out the smelling salts. Haha.
Just try not to enter the "SOUND LIKE ANDY SNEAP RECORDED YOU WITH THIS ONE AMAZING TRICK" territory, haha. I like it when people talk about what they're passionate about. But man, clickbait and the internet (and, I assume, the average age of people on youtube) just kinda ruin the seriousness. It ends up sounding like "here's what I like to do" and more like "if I don't get enough likes, I'm gonna kill myself" and it gets pathetic rather fast.
You just covered my ALL-TIME favorite band! ALL-TIME!! Love Gary Holt, his riffs, and most of all his signature Guitar tone! Great job man that amp sounded vicious!
+Mark Jaramillo He is a god. Great guy.
+low_e Gary is an OG. And you are right, he's so down to earth. Glad you liked it.
Pleasures of the Flesh was recorded on a Mesa Mark III. I used to have one and it would nail the PotF tone. Very temperamental amp though and tended to sound different depending on the day. Cool amp but I ended up selling it.
low_e my fav Mesa studio amp. I had a purple stripe. Where did you hear about the Mesa? That's cool to know.
In the Sept 1992 issue of Guitar School, there is an interview with Gary where they ask him about the various Exodus albums. When talking about PotF, his exact quote is:
"I used Mesa/Boogie Mark IIIs, which we got the same day we went into the studio to record. I really didn't know how to use them, so it was hard getting a tone. It's also an inconsistent amplifier. Now, I use modified Marshalls, and they're great"
My Mark III was a blue stripe.
Sounds great ! I love the comment on your buddy Modding the amps. Some ace in the hole things in life we all need to keep to ourselves.
YES! That is what it’s all about. Getting people enthused to get those speakers flapping.
I love your reminiscences about the good old days of thrash. Remember them so well, even though it was all happening half way round the world (New Zealand) from me.
That's THE rhythm tone man.
Love your videos man! I always learn something new...keep it up! Cheers
Thanks for the update, very impressive, this is next level of gear nerding
Thanks man
One of my favorites! Like Father Like Son. What an album. Great job man. I'm finding all your vids and hitting that like button bro.
Awesome! Welcome to the Circle!
Another slam dunk. This is definitely an amp I would love to own.
Crimson Ghost thanks man! It's a perfect amp for me/my style. Esp since I use low output pickups. Even more articulation.
Sounded good, dude. Nice job!
Exodus is one of my favourite bands of all time. Their riff writing is superb and unique and their tone is BLOODY legendary!!!
+ironbeast6 hell yeah!
One of the greatest guitar tones ever! Thanks so much for making this vid!! \m/
Nice job, sounds good! Like Father, Like Son is one of my fav Exodus songs as well.
Another job well done Owen. Loved the Brent Hinds shout out too!
Andrew Harmic thanks Andy. That ref was pretty obscure. I was wondering if anyone would catch it.
CIRCLE OF TONE Your friend for guitar tone
I'm a huge fan of Mastodon, and I'm super stoked for the new album due out Friday. Just wish they'd plan a tour date in Central Florida. I haven't seen them live in ages.
I saw them with Dethklok. I remember Brent was a complete tool to me when I tried to say hi. Part of his charm! haha
great tone you got there!
The Priest guys are using Engl powerballs and invaders lately, I'm hoping Andy will give their sound a more Accept-like bite. Fingers crossed!
I just got a Langner Modded Marshall it’s pretty sick and has a clean channel Todd put on it
Pleasures of the flesh is also my favorite exodus album.
Thanks man! Pleasures was so vibey. A real dark but quirky undertone. I haven't heard the Baloff demo's. I'll def check that out. Thanks man!
Another thing I got too add man is that one badass riff
Cheers Jack.
You are the man! Thank for the knowledge. I love the nasty tone on Tempo of the Damned, cool to know how they done it. I also love Nevermore, but I think their best sound was on Enemies of Reality remixed by Andy Sneap
Amazing album.
Love me some bay area thrash! Nice job on the Exodus tone. Subbed!
Mountain Mirrors thanks man!! And I saw your tweet like too. I think that officially my first Twitter like.
I probably lost it in the talks, which pickup did you use to record this? Absolutely great tone!
COT... Great video and tone match... Brings back memories listening to Exodus Bonded By Blood back in High school in the mid 80s... Were you ever into Savatage? Criss Oliva had a wicked guitar tone. I would love to hear you recreate his sound.
I wasn’t the biggest Savatage fan. I just never gravitated towards them. I’ll have to give them another listen.
You got yourseslf a Todd Langner! Daaaaaaaaaamn :o Just awesome! Looking forward to see you perform some old school Megadeth, I'm sure it would turn out to be great. Cheers!
Thanks man. That is on the cards.
Crimson Ghost good shout. I will 100% do Megadeth. But it will be Poland era to start. My heroin hero.
Do MEGADETH RUST IN PEACE!!!!!!! Seems so simple but, there is a lot going on in Dave's tone.
+Lizard King Great shout! Hard because they threw the kitchen sink at that one. I may not be able to source the gear. I actually pref Poland era. But RIP was brilliant too.
Awesome vid. Keep the Thrash coming!
Chris Soares thanks Chris. Appreciate it.
Yep. There was a code.
Love the channel and that tokai:)
very cool. What site did you get the midi drums from? Thanks
Fatal Step I tend to just google it. Not a specific place. Just watch out for those banners. Haha. Popup city.
Anyone got any idea what was used on Years of Decay?
Aolian One of my fav tones. Good shout.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE are you gonna do it?
Would be interesting to see you try and re create cemetery gates
+Scottish Trendkill Hell yeah! Tough to find that specific gear but you never know.
CIRCLE OF TONE. That's no easy task. That last wailing note in the solo will live on long after we're gone.
SuperDeadRooster Yep. Amazing solo.
SuperDeadRooster Yep. I know my limitations. I’ve been on the same stage as Dime in the peak of Pantrea. Albeit diving off the stage and getting into it with bouncers.
Damn that's awesome
The ONLY guy who did killer mods on Marshalls! Todd was in a league of his own! All his mods were just a bit different from model to model. But I think the mods he did for the H team are his best work. Killer job with this vid and one of the many epic Exodus songs!
I also have an Exodus question I am dying to know...what Amp/effects does Rick Hunolt use for his solos on Pleasures and Fabulous Disaster. Those leads sound GREAT with that cool sound and I have always wondered what it is. Maybe you know and could share some insight? Cheers Mate, great channel and vids!
I’d love to know too. That chorus sound to solos it awesome.
Agreed. Some of the best lyrics in metal.
This has to my favorite tone you’ve done. Probably because Gary has the best metal tone IMO. Even the the later Exodus Engl tone with a Kemper kills.
Everyone in the bay also had the Jose mod.
Don't forget Lee Jackson.
gonna give this album a spin now!
Dude.... wow! I would LOVE to see you try out Jon Schaffer's tone...
Good call.
CIRCLE OF TONE. It would be massively hard IMO, since i know he uses custom built Larry amps... but yeah bro.. that would be sick as fuck!
Nice tone! Well done! (RIP Todd Langner)
Thanks man. He made a hell of an impact.
Omega Wave had the musical goodness with tight production.
agreed
I always thought a Peavey Triple X was involved on Tempo of the Damned. I think I remember Gary Holt mentioning it in an interview a long time ago.
The Langner mod , is amazing.
So your cabinets are in the VocalBooth? When you do these recordings? What size is it if so? Any internal absorption i.e. too small recording closures can cause issues. Tell me god damn it! 8O)
Yep. Here is the booth I use. Size does not matter much for close micing. An easy way is to put noise blankets draped all over the inside of a closet.
Like Father, Like Son! Please daddy no more!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Awesome video!
I personally love the celestion 75 I had a couple for 4 by 12 Peavey cabs years ago that were loaded with my man did they Rock I wish I still had them now there's nothing like them
The blood for the blood god flexi got me in to Sabbat! I read the book Dreamweaver was based on and everything. Badass.
Jack Gibson has been in the band for at least 2 decades. He's on the 1997 live album called Another Lesson In Violence, which is probably my favorite exodus album because it is so heavy
Time flies when you are having friendly violent fun.
Haha.
Langner Amp? ruclips.net/video/JWTTZ3boatQ/видео.html
I am going to rock this on my home computer for sure! Work computer won't play it.
+MrMuench Can you share it on the Facebook page? I can’t click on it on my phone.
Yep he’s a beast.
silver black i always felt the same way about exodus man. For me they were always the best example of.thrash metal
Swain Bjornstrandt amen brother
Rick was better....
Andy is a bloody nice chap and responsible for so many bedroom producers getting their first stab into making records (including me!)
Anyway, how bout doing a video that covers Doom Metal tone, so high gain fuzz pedals! Pallbearers "Foundations" sound for instance?
That’s awesome. I’d love to meet Andy. He’s a legend. It’s just a shame everyone copied him.
Cheers!
yes, you are right. I got too excited and posted before watching the whole video, sorry!
uglijimus totally understandable...I blah blah blah ha ha.
Great sounding mod!
Great sound really!
Thanks man.
Hey owen that rocked. Can you please do dream theater overture 1928 guitar tone if it's easy to get the gear for you.
Isn't the SD SH-5 ceramic with pretty high output? Around 14k? Maybe your Custom Shop one is a bit different?
This was fucking awesome mate!!! .......Can you try to create the sound of SABBAT? , history of a time to come and Dream Weaver ... speaking of Andy Sneap .. I wonder if people know Andy’s history?
I would love to but gaaawd knows what he used. It was amazing.
CIRCLE OF TONE. Just give him a call haha , keep up the good work 🤘🏻
you've got great taste in metal!
uglijimus Thanks man!
Would be sick to recreate the Another lesson in violence setup or Force Of Habit album
+savagebrutality1 good call. I’ll def do Exodus again. I’m obsessed with pleasures of the flesh too.
Probably the sickest tones ever produced, also Fight's album War Of Words
Robin Hansen this is an amazing deal. Shipping is a lot but still. m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_g212_vintage_b_stock_3.htm?o=22&search=1489136724
Yep. Invader is as high output as you can get. Pretty cool though.
invader is, it's not muddy. it's high gain yet still clear enough to work with and if not you can always turn the screws to lower the pup right ^^.
Even better than the original tone :)
history of a time to come and dreamweaver by sabbat are 2 the greatest of under rated metal albums ever. FUKKIN AWESOME
great one too! (really dig this serie)
TORVICK V thanks man! Lots more to come.
Rafa Dominguez thanks Rafa. Love the feedback. I'll be covering more genres in the future. What types of guitar tones do you like?
Great vids man! I have a serious question about the guitar tone of Tim McMurtries on the 1st M.O.D. Album (Method of Destruction with Billy Milano U.S.A. for M.O.D. but you already knew that I am sure! Is that guitar tone a Langner Modded sound? It's very unique and somewhat in the same vein as Exodus sound. Please share insights if possible. Cheers Mate!
+MrMuench I’ll check it out. I know a guy who will know so I’ll ask him. I loved MOD. Esp Louis Svitek era.
Zetro is like the Bon Scott of thrash!
Haha. Yep.
Pls try the among the living or spreading the disease guitar tones from anthrax
Awesome suggestion
@@CIRCLEOFTONE love your content btw, been watching since the ride the lightning tone video.
Great tone. Any link for the midi?
josefrancisco thanks man. I think this is it, and if not I can email mine to you: en.midimelody.ru/exodus/
i never heard anyone in metal history that they have more sharper guitar sound distorsion like on impact is imminent album listening metal over 30 years. today with so much technical crap they can"t make a razor sharp thrash metal sound like in late 80s and early 90"s
Unfortunately, not as many people are going for that kind of guitar tone nowadays.
could you do an episode on rammstiens early guitar sound?
Yep. That has to happen.
In 1990 I saw Exodus live in Oakland with Urban Dance Squad and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
+Chord TheSeeker killer show. Who blew who off the stage?
CIRCLE OF TONE Your friend for guitar Well, Exodus kicked ass, of course. RHCP were great back then too. They were still mostly funk and they were jumping about a foot off the stage, just jumping up and down, for almost the entire show. How they could play like that, I don’t know.
Cocaine
nice one.
I'm loving my Langner 2204
Lasse Lammert nice! I didn't know you had one. I knew you had a buttload of Marshall's though.
I think Dukes is an awesome human being. I just think he was a bit too hardcore for Exodus.
One of the hardest tones to capture is Gary Holt.
Yep. His right hand is gold.
Bradley Riley yep. I'm a fan of passives too. Thanks for watching.
wow ... never knew tokai produce kramer/charvel model .... I thought they Gibson and fender copy experts (^^)
Boy Aditya yep! Tokai copied the short lived "Rand" guitar made famous by Vivian Campbell on the White Snake still of the night video. It's a Tokai VC-75. My first proper guitar I owned.
Brain Dead would have been the choice song
SewRobert Godlike song. That vibe and crunch is so evil. My fav album.
Hey! Please do King Diamond anything from Abigail, Them or Conspiracy.
That’s coming next yeah. I’m doing horror/shock bands for Halloween.
Emg hz are not low output
+Ash Walker I didn’t say they were.
Mourning Has Broken was tight as hell but I thought the song writing was a bit lazy.
Dan Gower mod.
Please, Daddy no more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ask Lee jackson to mod one
Personally unless you are playing a massive stage with 100k people, pickups are way over rated. The AMP and pedals make the difference. Of course I play in a tiny apartment so cannot use mega watt amps.
Yep I like to keep my Pickups low output though. More dynamics.
I like watching your videos because the content is great, but you could really lose the clickbait titles on all your videos.
Cramel yup. It's not really "bait" though if I have what I claim in the titles in the vid.
Matt Young yep. I'll keep it in mind. I'm open for feedback etc.
Waaaay off. Far too flat sounding. Almost sounds like you used an amp sim.
