Business Is Booming for the Italian Mafia During COVID

- The coronavirus hit Italy like a freight train. By March 10, there were already over 8,500 cases. Under massive pressure to stop the pandemic from spreading in prisons, the government was forced to make another unprecedented decision - they released more than 200 Mafia members from high-security prisons.
For prosecutors and investigators, this decision walked back decades of hard work. For the mafia, it came at a perfect moment. The coronavirus has not only offered new business opportunities such as selling masks but also has sent Italy spiraling toward complete economic collapse, leaving the most vulnerable Italians with no option but to turn to the mob.
VICE News goes to Naples, Italy to see how the mafia has used the pandemic to tighten their grip on Italy.

Hey Vice News,
Great report. I'd like to add that the Police implemented a tactic to track the mafiosi's circle of collaborators during house arrests and lockdown. Very few knew about it, to the point that many government officials didn't know. They tracked them back and tracked their family members who also were hiding. They emerged to reconnect with the bosses, and that's when Police (Carabinieri) managed to get intel to then arrest more mafiosi in the end.
It came up in the media a few weeks ago in Italy but I believe this video was shot way before the news broke.
I think it'd be worth mentioning this in a followup video, or simply by adding more in the notes under the video.
Ciao from London / Udine, Italy

Because they act like mafia. Look at all the weed, pocket knives, and face masks we stole from random people on the streets who were just trying to live. They act like 5th grade bullies who stole lunch money and got away with it.

"[organized crime] does you a favor that the government owes you as a right." What a profound statement! So simple, yet so succinct.
Actually that's gobbledygook. A right to what? Taking out a loan? Rights are yours inviolably as a human being. Rights can be interfered with or restored, but they cannot be owed or given. Indeed, because we believe that "rights" can be given and that government owes us these-whatever we think they are-we allow government to aspire to omnipotence, or as government realizes it, totalitarianism. What is outside government becomes, de jure, clandestine and lawless. So government cracks down harder, radicalizing everything outside of its control and radicalizing itself in acquiring the means to crack down harder. No wonder the police look like gangsters. They are gangsters with a license.
