- For years, a ruthless mafia has ruled Calabria through intimidation and violence. Now prosectuors are taking them on, charging hundreds in one of the biggest trials in decades. But can the Italian state beat the country's most powerful mafia organisation?
The Calabrian mafia began local but over recent decades it's transformed into a powerful, multi-national criminal organisation, with an estimated turnover of 80 billion dollars a year.
Now Italian prosecutors are running a maxi-trial against members of a family they allege is one of the ‘Ndrangehta’s most powerful clans - the Mancusos.
More than 300 members and associates of the Mancusos have been arrested.
The charge sheet is sobering. It includes murder, extortion, drug trafficking and money laundering.
In this gripping crime saga, Fran Kelly travels to Vibo Valentia to tell the story of this historic attempt to curb the power of the ‘Ndrangheta.
She gains access to the man leading the trial, Chief Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri. He’s been investigating the Calabrian mafia for decades and has long been on the mafia’s kill list.
“There’s always tension. There’s always fear and you must always be careful”, he tells Kelly as he drives to court surrounded by his security motorcade. “You have to tame fear and talk to death.”
Kelly speaks with community members who now feel emboldened to speak out against the mafia.
‘The number of people turning on the mafia has increased’, says anti-mafia activist Giuseppe Borrello. ‘It’s new for Vibo Valentia.”
Gratteri’s actions have given hope to Sara Scarpulla, whose son was blown up in a car bomb organised by a member of the Mancuso family.
Kelly also speaks to an anti-mafia prosecutor in Milan, Italy’s financial heart, where the ‘Ndrangheta has established a strong presence.
In Calabria, not everyone in the community is rallying behind Nicola Gratteri’s maxi-trial.
“There’s vicious mudslinging aimed at the Prosecutor’s Office’, explains lawyer Giovanna Fronte. “That’s how the ‘Ndrangheta operates.”
For the people of Vibo Valentia, the maxi-trial has raised hopes of a new chapter in which the State regains control of a land long thought lost to organised crime.
But can these prosecutions uproot the powerful networks of the ‘Ndrangheta?

I met judge Gratteri on a plane from Reggio Calabria to Rome (I'm Calabrian, living abroad) . He had no escort, no security guards, apparently he was travelling alone like a normal passenger. I was not feeling good and he came to talk to me asking me if I was OK. He was so friendly, calm, kind and polite that I still find hard to believe he and his family live every single day under threat. I would never be so confident with people I don't know, walking in his shoes. He's a great, brave man. May God always protect him. We need more men like him in the future.

I live further north, and my neighbours are connected. Their son just did 13 years for planting bombs. On his release, he's been granted an exotic car dealership and is now set to wed a woman twenty years his junior. A couple days ago he sent a local man to hospital for taking "his" parking spot outside (it isn't his; that's a public street).
We avoid all contact with our neighbours but of course inevitably we hear about what goes on. Hear their phone arguments. By neighbours, I mean they share a wall with our house; they're ten metres from us at all times. We've lived here for decades, before they moved here in fact. Why should we leave. It's been a constant war of wits. If I get a new car, they're right over here, demanding to be allowed to "have a go" in it. I sold my car. If we want to restructure our house, we'd have to pay them to stay out of our business.
This is the reality of life here. It isn't glorified in the foreign press or media. Few outsiders know what goes on.
This is no way to live. It is unfortunate and since in some places they also seem too protect neighborhoods people romanticize the mafia because they think they all operate the same.

The people get very little support from the government, the local politicians wouldn't get elected without the mafia support so they are essentially in the pocket of the mafias, it is not like the mafia are some foreign entity, they live there and are neighbours, their families have lived there for countless generations, the government in Rome and Milan are more the foreigners and intruders.
It is an incredibly difficult situation and until the regions become significantly more wealthy the mafias will remain in control.

Wow, I thought that stories about Italian mafia died with dealing with them in the States in late 80’s. Besides, we haven’t heard about Italian mafia in Italy for the past 30 years. Apparently, it is still active. If authorities really wanted and wouldn’t be corrupted the crime would be stopped. Just execute a few leaders publicly and the rest will think twice before doing anything.

I've seen good international reporting on the mafias in the past but that was years ago. Internationally it's just not been an important topic to pay attention to, there's always so much happening at once.
I will admit I had no idea the Italians were still dealing with the mafias on this level though. I thought by now they would have made progress. It's all just sad, and rage inducing.
The thing is we can only remain angry at so many things at once and things like this although they are internationally a major issue, it's just not a major issue on the scale of something like covid or the threat of a new worldwar which has been hovering for a lot longer than the invasion of Ukraine. When placed into the big picture organized crime just doesn't really rank as a high priority to pay attention to, and that ofcourse benefits the crime families.
It's pretty sad that this great man is living in a form of prison while the criminals are living the high life though. I hope when he retires that he does it outside Italy so he can experience the freedom he's attempting to give his people (if he makes it to retirement).
The risk is that the State abandons Gratteri, as it was for Falcone and Borsellino. As Italian, I see that as the key point. It is a terrible battle, but the State can prevail if its will is solid. For now, it's never been constant enough, never present on the territory in the right way. Not to forget that the main battle is cultural. Without changing the common people's mentality, nothing will ever change. Great doc by the way.
State already abandoned Gratteri, he proposed a modifications of many laws of the penal code to inflict heavier proceedings against mafiosi and change investigations methods, the only article the govt adopted is the telematic process, they connect different inmates via Skype, all the rest stays the same
Absolutely correct. If there were no links with politics and the state was compact, it would be game over. The fact that there are at least 4 major mafias here with great financial power tells you the story.
As an Albanain, our organized crime is now entangled with Ndragheta and cosa nostra through marriage unions. I suspect there it's same as here, politicians are in their books after they fund their campaigns and fill their pockets.

One of the many problems in society is when regular citizens and people begin to see Mafia bosses as heroes..if that mentality never change it will continue for centuries to come.
I have seen this phenomenon in the Italian society, Colombian and Mexican society. They see Mafia Bosses as heroes.
No we do not, or at least 99% of us do not. Please do not confuse what Hollywood shows with the reality. The only Italians praising mafia bosses are either mafiosos themselves (less than 1%) or stupid, brain-dead rappers.
It's the same for any countries mafia, Japanese, Chinese, Jewish, Greek, Russian, they all use that same tactic.
There's nothing heroic about those involved in organized crime. People see the fancy cars, clothes and expensive houses but ignore all the killing, abuse, sadism and innocents being targeted. I don't know why people wanna join that lifestyle. I don't see why anyone would willingly wanna cause chaos and destroy families.

This area can be such a booming part of the country with it's beaches and productivity of farming. The corruption is even at a local level. A week after I purchased my small apartment in the Catanzaro region, a contractor knocked on my door and told me what work he needed to do at my home. He had done two jobs then luckily my relative managed to have him move on from me. It was shabby, expensive work and forced. He is the "contractor of the area".

It makes me so upset to see how some criminals are still so powerful in Italy. It's still entrenched in the older generations but the newer generations are really growing stronger against this s**t. Unfortunately, the 'ndrangheta' is not only in Italy, it's in every rich country in the world (from the USA to Germany) and is almost as invisible as in Milan.
The only leader who stopped the mafia was Benito Mussolini, that's why the mafia hated him and worked with the USA in WW2 to help them enter the south of Italy

It's because kids grow up in criminal enviroments or think they are superior to others and want to show it by joining mafia, or maybe they see it as something cool that they can do to have fun or get respect. I've been to Italy. It's the best place in the world for a vacation. The beaches are beautiful, the food is the best in Europe, and the atmosphere is just perfect. Yet somehow, most Italian I met there wanted to go away from the country. They always say its good for 1-2 weeks vacation, but not for living.
Atmosphere doesn’t mean anything if you can’t earn enough to experience it.

@fantomas you don't know nothing, the crime in Calabria is very inside the society and if the murders are less is because they don't want to draw the attention, they are not so stupid like in Mexico. And you don't know the history of 'ndrangheta where they killed a lot of people in past years like in Mexico, the difference is that Calabria have very few inhabitants (most people live in villages). Also now they shoot less than before because there are less friction between opposite criminal groups of the same territory.

The answer is NO for several reasons.
First of all, "Organized Crime", which has different names according to the Regions (Mafia, Camorra, 'Ndranghetta, Sacra Corona Unita etc.) is now well established in our Government and firmly rooted under all aspects.
Second of all, it is been decades that "Organized Crime" has been allowed to grow and expand and now it is not only related to Southern Italy, but, sadly, to all Italy (Central and North).
Exactly. Can the Italian state beat the country's most powerful mafia organisation is a wrong and misleading question. Mafia is not a matter of criminality. It is a matter of culture and socio-economical development. The state cannot beat the mafia because in a big part of the country, they overlap. The people, the state, the socioeconomic tissue and the institutions are themselves the mafia.
Of course they can't, neither can every other country that has a mafia or form of it, the goal is to MINIMIZE it, just like drug use, prostitution, etc etc. Use some logic and common sense.
Organised Crime can only be dismantled if you target their key structures like Drugs Trafficking -
How do you deliver a blow to their drug trafficking operation - Simple You get people rehabilitated and get them off drugs completely. Less addicts = less customers = Damage to Business.
2. Get the public on State's side which is going on right now. - The people who are probably supporting the Mancusos or mafia are probably old people and will sooner die out and so now the younger generation has to be educated properly on Reality.
So that the enemy could get weakened.
These two things can help destroy any Organised Crime - See The Answer lies in "People".

The other regions are not a big problem, in the sense that between Ndrangheta and Cosa Nostra the latter is better fought because it is less entrenched than the former.
There would be a solution: expel (or dissolve, commission) Calabria from Italy so doing so would solve so many problems.

Impossible to do this. The mafia is rooted deeply in every single aspect of life. No business in south Italy can run without having a percentage go to the mafia directly (even bakeries, restaurants, anything). And the mafia has political power on a communal and federal level, the mafia work together with many high profile politicians. Italy is one of the most corrupt states in Europe, probably the most corrupt. The mafia control everything, even local elections of mayors, or building of streets and buildings. And since the mafia is too well organized, the government can just watch and if they catch one, then comes the next boss.

I disagree here. There are alot of quality docs and when they get made its only on the public channels. 2doc makes some excellent docs. NPO 2 also airs bought crime docs. I think you have to look alittle bit better.

My father and his family were forced to flee calabria because of the mafia. Unfortunately for the mafia my family owns some of the biggest waterfront mansions in calabria in 2023 after moving to America and starting businesses and working. The mafia no longer gives them an issue due to all the renovations our family has done to help our village.
