I really love Dr. Wortle's School. I'm so glad I read it several Victobers ago. Trollope's voice to the reader is just cozy and humorous and endearing.
Trollope is wonderful. I understand well how you feel about him. I've read 22 of his novels and liked most of all. My favorites are Last Cronicle of Barset and He Knew he was Right. I only reread "Can you forgive Her" which I didn't like much in the first read and is now one of my favorites. Fortunately he wrote very much so we can read and reread...that's what I've been doing for the last twenty years. Loved these Victober videos.
Oh Katie…I am so glad to see this video😊😊👏👏. I suggested this a few months ago. Anthony Trollope is my absolute favorite male author. I have read all of his novels, many of them more than once. For the books that you have left to read, my favorite would be The Bertrams. I loved it. He actually took part of the storyline to Jerusalem. I truly enjoyed the fact that he included the history and the sites that are now very well known. It is a small part of the novel, but interesting. My all time favorite Trollope novel would have to be Dr Thorne. The whole of the Barsetshire Chronicles are my sentimental favorites. My favorite stand alone novel is Ralph The Heir. Get me started talking about Mr Trollope and it’s hard to stop😁😁. Wonderful video as always!
I had never heard about Trollope before discovering your channel in 2020 and now I'm embarked in my own "Mega Trollope reading project", you have inspired me to do that 🥰. I believe my favourite so far is Nina Balatka, I loved Trollope's depiction of the Jewish community in Prague and also all the excitement around the ending. I was at the end of my seat!
I am so glad you updated us on your status with Anthony Trollope! I read The Chronicles of Barsetshire, last year. And for Kate Howe’s 2024 prompt I’m reading The Vicar of Bullhampton. Really enjoying this new author to me! And now I have your list to go by!!!
I hadn't the faintest idea there were so many Trollope books. 😮 Since you've gone that far you must finish! 👍
Katie, you’re like a spring that flows incessantly with refreshing enthusiasm for reading. I am currently working my way through the Chronicles of Barsetshire and it’s so beautifully written it’s hard to describe how wonderful it is. Thank you for another infectious video!
Such a great series :)
I love your goal, Katie! I'm at 32 of Trollope's novels, and I'm sure I can make a good stride towards my goal to read all of his novels in 2024 and 2025! You've inspired me to write down which of his novels I have left to read.
You have a charming channel (I've been working my way through your old content). Your enthusiasm and love of the subject matter is evident and infectious, it's nice to see someone who's not just doing it for clicks but because they clearly love what they're talking about. I look forward to your future videos!
Every time you talk about Trollope I think I should really get to him soon, but just haven't been able to yet. I even bought his Palliser series when I found it in a local used bookstore years ago 😅. Maybe next year with you reading one a month will inspire me to finally pick one up!
I recently listened to the Autobiography on Audible -- very enjoyable.
I'm looking forward to it!
Soooooo .......... Barsetshire Readalong in 2026? 😉
I mean, it has been on my mind as a possibility . . .
@@katiejlumsdenI would definitely love to participate in that 😊
Oh! I may have to get online and buy some more Trollope today! This was wonderful. 💛
Great video, I am on my 15th (The three Clerks) and love his books, especially how he portrays women. But surprised Barchester Towers didn't make your top ten. How can we do without Mrs Proudie😂
I'm curious about The Fixed Period, will be very interested in your view on Trollopean sci-fi when you get to it.
I read the first 3 novels in the Barsetshire chronicles, a short story and am currently reading Framley parsonage (I started yesterday !). But I have found all of his writings on ebook (including his autobiography), so I know one day, I will have read them all. I can empathize with your goal 😉
We admire your perserverance ... I have only bought & read these works of his - The Warden, Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne, Framley Parsonage, The Small House at Allington & The Last Chronicle of Barset ... with The Small House at Allington being my fav due in part to Lily Dale ... walking through the sitting room the other day I espied my copy of Phineas Redux, picked it up, started reading, then put it down! I have to read things in order! I am sure the rest of the Palliser novels are here some place ...
I am so impressed that you have read so much Trollope. I am on a life quest to read all of his novels and am 73 with 2 to go. The first time I had heard of him was in the 1980s when the Palliser series was on TV. There are several novels on your TBR which are among my favorites: Mr. Scarborough’s Family, The Bertrams, and The MacDermotts of Ballycloran. Castle Richmond also interests me because it takes place during the Irish Potato Famine.
Just about to read Dr Wortle's School for Victober so reassuresd to hear you speak so well of it.
I hope you're enjoying Ayala's Angel as it is absolutely one of my favorites, and surprised it isn't much discussed among Trollope's works. Of the one's you haven't read yet I really liked John Caldigate which I bought when visiting London. The Fixed Period is a little bizarre but so good to read something of Trollope's that is much less formulaic.
I have only read the first four Barsetshire series but I want to read more.
Trollope is one of my favourite Victorian authors! I'll always be grateful to you for having introduced me to his works. So far I've read the Barsetshire chronicles as well as Dr. Wortle's School, The Way We Live Now, and He Knew He Was Right. The last was a buddy read with a friend and we both really enjoyed it so I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it after you reread it!
Right now my primary goal is making my way through my physical TBR which is really stressing me out 😂😂 But once I'm through with that (Hopefully early next year if all goes according to plan) I plan to read more Trollope standalones (and more Victorian literature in general 😁😁)
Thank you Katie!
I enjoy his books also. I have read most of the books that you have read so far. I have just finished reading The Warden and Barchester Towers and have bought the 1974 DVD last week - yes and watched it whole series which is very good indeed. It surprises me that Trollope is not more well known.
Oh yes, such a great miniseries! I get the impression that Trollope was better known in the 20th century and has fallen out of fashion lately. But he's so amazing!
This had me very much looking forward to The Last Chronicle of Barset. Indeed, your top ten is filled with Trollope novels that I've yet to have the pleasure of reading. I hope that you find some new favourites from the final books of his that you have to read.
I've read 11 Anthony Trollope novels and I can't wait to read soooo many more😊
I've read 15 so far. I enjoyed both series equally with Last Chronicle and The Prime Minister being my favourites. I have started Cousin Henry today. Id love to read them all
I've read 18 so far, hoping for 2 more in Victober, if only i can decide which 2 to read this month..maybe belton estate and an eye for an eye. Mostly because they are shorter ones, i think?
I plan on reading all of Trollope too. I'm at Dr Thorne in that series. I just finished reading all of his short stories this year with a group on IG. I prefer his earlier stories but do like all the ones in the Christmas at Thompson Hall collection.
I've read John Caldigate and Marion Fay, which are both interesting novels. The former was quite an exciting one. I also really enjoyed Rachel Ray. I want to read all the Trollope novels; I've read 25 thus far.
I've read 19 of his novels, including the two series. My favourite of the 19 is He Knew He Was Right, followed by The Eustace Diamonds and The Way We Live Now. I think I will also set a goal of one Trollope a month, until I've read everything!
I too like a good love triangle as people in love can be so silly sometimes and are unable to see themselves acting so silly, which I think is quite funny. I haven't read Trollope yet tho tbh each time here you talk up his novels I'm moved to start but you how it is with tbrs, right? Instead my current focus is making good on my Wilde promise, plus GB Shaw. Arms and the Man, aka the Chocolate Creme Soldier was great fun in my college days. I'm hoping to recapture that spirit, to whatever extent possible.
He's my favorite Victorian author! I've not read any that you have yet to read. My favorites are Can you Forgive her and The Duke's Children, with Barchester Towers not far behind (Mr Slope is such a great character!). I've just started Doctor Wortle's School and very much looking forward to reading more.
I've read eleven Anthony Trollope books and am currently reading The Way We Live Now.
i just found Trollopes autobiography in a used bookshop in Chicago and can't wait to get to it. I have read about 10 of his books now and need to read The Eustace Diamonds next.
Somebody told me that his autobiography does spoil some of his novels, so I'm leaving it to the end!
I studies Barchester Towers for A level over 40 years ago. I think it might be time to read some more Anthony Trollope
A worthy goal to completing The Trollope Canon in 2025!
I'm reading The Claverings at the moment and loving it so far, the main character reminds me a bit of Johnny Eames. I've finished the Barsetshire Chronicles and am waiting a bit to start on Pallister. I enjoyed Dr Wortle's and really liked The Way We Live Now. I find it hard to pick a favourite between Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne, and The Small House at Allington.
Oooo....I feel a challenge coming on! I plan to read The American Senator for Victober and then I, too, will have 12 novels left to read--basically his last 12 published books. It would be a great project for 2025! I think once you re-read Rachel Ray and He Knew He Was Right, they will go up in your estimation. Question--did you read the "restored" version (from 2015) of The Duke's Children? If not, you should add that to your re-reads as well, as it adds 25% of the book that was cut. Of the ones you have left, both La Vendee and Castle Richmond are different from typical Trollope, since they are both set during real events, but they are good and important in their own ways, esp. Castle Richmond. I liked The Macdermots better than the Kellys & O'Kellys. And for some reason I have a special place in my heart for Miss Mackenzie❤️ and her friend Miss Todd (Miss Todd shows up in The Bertrams, too).
No, I haven't read the restored version of The Duke's Children, so I should! I do really like Miss Mackenzie, too. I'm so excited to finish off reading all of Trollope. Good luck with your last 12 :)
Hello. I hope you are doing well. One Anthony Trollope book I noticed you did not reference was his travel book called The West Indies and the Spanish Main. I was able to purchase it from Thrift Books, so it is a used book. I have not yet read it, but do plan to read it in the near future. Have a great day!
Yes, that's one of his non-fiction works. At some point, when I've read all his novels, I may start on the non-fiction!
You know, i don't adore Trollope as much as you do. But what I do like is he always surprises me. His novels vary so widely, so I never know what to expect. I disliked The Belton Estate so much, but then adored Miss MacKenzie. 🤷♀️ I'm currently reading Can You Forgive Her? and am enjoying it a lot. ❤
Good call on waiting until you're done with everything else to read his Autobiography. It has spoilers for several of the books (including one for Barsetshire that irritated me even though I usually don't mind spoilers for classics).
Hi,Chris here. I am 73 and didn't start reading Trollope till my late 50s. I bought second-hand all the OUP paperbacks which I love and read them as i got them. You've got some stonkers still to read but I thought I would just say Nigel Patterson's reading of He Knew He Was Right is pretty good, not Timothy West but you can't have everything. And what a bonkers book it is. No spoilers here but Trollope excels himself with Louis Trevelyan. I need to go and read it again right now. I love your channel and am currently reading lots of Mrs Gaskell at your recommendation. Thanks.
Yes, I'm very much looking forward to rereading that one - I loved it as a teenager, but it's been so long since I read it! Gaskell is so wonderful, too :)
My grandmother read through his more well known works.
I think I've read about 30 or 31 AT novels. The Chronicles of Barsetshire novels are my favourite, esp. the audio versions narrated by Timothy West.
I read Rachel Ray and Dr Whortle’s School earlier this year. Both wonderful. I am doing a buddy read of Marion Fay next month! I agree with you about Phineas Redux. You are way ahead of me but I also want to read all his works.
Also if you want to buddy read La Vendee, at some point, I am willing! I read G A Henry’s 1900 novel about it and it fascinated me about the whole phenomenon. I had not heard of the uprising before.
Great idea - a buddyread would be good to help get through/to a longer one! Maybe in January/February?
@@katiejlumsden January and February work for me! Looking forward to it!
I've read the Barset series, The Way We Live Now, and am reading Miss Mackenzie now. So thats eight books. I'd love to read all of them. But I don't want to read only him. I think I will periodocally read one of his. I want to read the Pallasher series. I've ordered them. I'm reading regency female writers and want to continue that project.
Just reading, Can you forgive her, my first dose of Trollope.
I have read 9 by AT so far. I just finished the Prime Minister and can’t believe how relevant it is - the politics and relationships- Looking forward to the Dukes Children but my favourite so far is the Last Chronicle of Barset- so beautiful. What an ending to a brilliant series.
There is something so rewarding about the end of a long series.
Is it okay just to skip reading Phineas Redux altogether?
I want to read the Barchester Chronicles. Maybe I’ll make it a project for 2025.
It's such a great series!
@@katiejlumsden so I hear! And I love Angela Thirkell’d novels set in Trollope’s Barsetshire so I’d love to get a feel for close she comes to the original.
I am nearing the end of "Can you Forgive her?" on audiobook (with the fantastic Timothy West) and it is brilliant - very funny with a strong storyline. It has become my second favourite Trollope after The Way we Live Now. I've read about 8 other AT's and my feelings on the Chronicles of Barsetshire are mixed. The Small House at Allington was my favourite followed by Framley Parsonage and Barchester Towers, but the others felt overlong and didn't do much for me. Can you Forgive Her? has a stronger story than any of them and I think I am going to like the Palliser series - I hope they remain as good as this one!
Can You Forgive Her? is great! I have to say that of the Pallisers, book 1, 5 and 6 are in my opinion the best, and I found that there was a bit of a dip in the middle of the series for me. But those last two books are so very amazing.
I thought I was the only person nutty enough to try and read all of AT's novels (his travel books are reputedly dreadful). Read 43 thus far, plus his autobiography, and hunting down the final obscure titles - THE GOLDEN LION OF GRANPERE has been elusive, along with THE LANDLEAGUERS.
Phineas Redux is my Trollope this month. I'm dreading it. I hope I like him better by the end. I really hope so. But... sigh. I doubt it.
I love Phineas Finn and Phineas Redux.
Yeah, he wasn't my favourite Trollope character. I like Phineas Finn as a novel better than Phineas Redux XD But the final two books in the series are so very amazing.
@@katiejlumsden Did you find parallels between Lizzy Eustace and Becky Sharpe from Vanity Fair? Sometimes...
Weirdly I didn't like Small House as much as the others in the Barchester series. I think I didn't like Lily Dale as much as others do. But I do love Trollope so much!!@
Yes, I love Lily Dale a lot, and whether you get on with her as a character probably does have a bit impact on your enjoyment of that one.
I’ve never read anything from Anthony Trollope 😅
You should :)
The Barchester Chronicle books are my favourite.Recently I read one which annoyed me so much. Sir Harry Hotspur of Humblethwaite. I haven’t quite finished and may not. That stubborn girl, the heir who was just appalling and the father who didn’t make sense and couldn’t get any sense out of his daughter. I gave up on them! Didn’t put me off Trollope though. Just that one book.
Yes, Sir Harry Hotspur would be somewhere in the middle for me - I rather liked it until the ending. But he has so many books!
